It's semifinal action today as the Meade Panthers get ready to take on the Garfield Bulldogs. Winner of this game will play for a state championship tomorrow. This portion of our pregame show presented by Coast To Coast Turf. So yesterday Meade, they got their quarterfinal victory defeating Stanwood by the score of 62:54.

The third quarter was the deciding quarter for Meade. Taryn Gardner scored 12 third quarter points on her way to a 29 point performance and led me to that 72 or 62 to 54 victory yesterday. So it was a 2928 game. Mead led at the half, early second half, Stan Wood jumped on top by three. There were four total ties, two lead changes in the game and Mead goes on to the victory and with that win improves on the season going into this semifinal game with a record of 23 on the year.

So they'll look for win number 21 today. But to do it, they're going to have to beat a really, really, really good basketball team in the Garfield Bulldogs. Yesterday Garfield defeated Lakeside, the only team that's beaten them this year. Lakeside of Seattle, a Metro Conference opponent of Lakeside. Lakeside or Lakeside got Garfield in the league season.

Snapped a 31 game winning streak that Garfield had. They are the two time defending 3A state champions and yesterday Garfield had a good second quarter of play. They led Lakeside by seven at the half and won it by seven and they were not headed in that ball game. They led from start to finish. There were no ties, no lead changes Yesterday in Garfield's 5346 win over Lakeside.

In that ball game, it was Jada Lewis who had 15 points to lead Garfield. Sarah Lessig and Katie Fizzo had 12 points apiece for the Bulldogs. So they get the victory. They are 21 and one going into play here as they look for state title number three in a row. When we come back, we will tell you more about this ballgame.

They're playing without probably the best player in the state of Washington in Malia Samuel. Samuel was injured last summer playing summer ball and tore an acl. Also meniscus tear as well. And so Samuel's out this entire year. She had a commitment to USC and has signed a letter of intent to play at UFC next year.

She was listed as the top recruit in the state of Washington. She was the MVP of the state tournament last year. She averaged 16 and a half points, better than six assists and better than six steals per ball game. Six steals per ball game. She was first team all state metro player of the year, etc.

Ranked as the 58th best player in the nation according to ESPN. So Samuels tore her knee so they didn't have her coming back. But they've got so much more high level talent on this team. It's, it's, it's going to be very interesting because both these teams, I mean Taryn, Gardner, Anderson, Wells, Morrison, Reece, Frederick, probably all will play Division 1 basketball. There might even be another one or two by the time it's all said and done on this Mead team.

And that's the situation as well with this Garfield team. So, okay, you're without Malia Samuels, but you still have another senior in Emby Jones who is going to the University of Wisconsin. You've got Katie Fizzo, who's probably the best or one of the best products for the 2024 recruiting class. She's just a junior. She was the Metroleague MVP this season and was on the first team all metro League.

They've got a number of other very talented athletes on this team, whether it's Rekia Jackson or Sarah lessig who is a 63 sophomore. Embi Jones is a 63 senior. They start 6'3, 6'3, 6' feet, 6' feet among their five starters. So Mead's going to be at a size disadvantage and they're not going to be at an athleticism advantage in this ballgame. So Mead's gotta do a lot of things right here in this ballgame.

Now time for our Keys to the Game presented by Eastern Washington University. All right, for me, you've got to rebound in this ball game. You're going to be at a little bit of a size disadvantage. Definitely not going to be at an athletic advantage in this game. Although I don't think they're going to be at a disadvantage athletically.

There's a very athletic Mead team, but you've got to get on the boards, rebound when you're outsized by, you know, two to three inches. At a position, maybe even four at some positions. So Mead's going to have to to rebound. They've got to take care of the basketball. They can't turn it over a bunch of times in this game.

They've got to be plus in the turnovers, meaning they've got to force more turnovers than they give up. There's a couple of keys to the game for you rebounding. Stay as close as you can to Garfield on that. You've got to be able to limit the turnovers and I don't know that you have to shoot like you did yesterday, but you've got to shoot well here in this ball game. And of course it was last year Mead here in the state tournament did not shoot well, but they certainly shot well yesterday in the win against against Stanwood.

Mead is on top here by the score of 1 to nothing. Gardner yesterday hit 9 out of 10 from the foul line. Second free throw is good. So she gets them both. And it's a two nothing.

Mead lead and stepping out of bounds coming up into the fourth court is Fiso. She was just coming up the floor, but running down the right side and stepped out of bounds. And a careless turnover there for the Bulldogs. And Mead will bring it in. Sidelines in forecourt, just between the Garfield bench and midcourt.

Cyr gets it into Braun, left wing beyond the three point arc. Out it comes now to Sear, up top to Wells. Morrison, she dribbles once, pitches over to Braun, drives left side, takes the ball to the rim for a layup. That's good. Good drive there.

Meade is attacking the basket early on. And the Panthers have a four nothing lead as Natalie Braun scores. Jackson sends one down the right side into the corner. Here's a drive and a shot that is up no good by Jada Lewis. But she is fouled.

And she'll go to the free throw line here to shoot two shots. Drive called on or the foul called on. Sear, I believe they don't have. Oh, they do have the numbers and everything up on the scoreboard here today. And they've called the foul on Reese Frederick instead.

Morrison dribbles on the right, finds Cyr. Now right wing to Gardiner. Beyond the arc. Gardner dumps it back inside. Sear a little late.

Footer over and off. Offensive rebound. Wells. Morrison has her first shot blocked. And we're going to have what?

What do we have here? A jump ball is called. I think the official that called the jump ball realized he probably shouldn't have called the jump ball. But he had to do it in the end once he blew the whistle. He can't.

You can't bring the sound from the whistle back into the whistle. Now the officials talking it over. And they will keep the shot clock reset at 30 seconds. Gardner to bring it in from the left baseline. Gets it in Wells.

Morrison, right baseline, drives, takes it in the lane. And she is blocked and fouled by Rekia Jackson. Rekia Jackson. Excuse me. Jackson gets her first foul.

Early on, Mead led for a good chunk of the first half of play, jumped out to a 4 nothing lead, still led by 4 at 10 to 6. Garfield came back, tied the game at 10. That was our second tie of the game and then took their first lead of the game at 12 10. Mead came back 6 straight points, took a 16 to 12 lead.

They gam ended up being tied at 18. That was the fourth tie of the first quarter play. Mead took a 2018 lead and Garfield scored just before the buzzer and we were tied at 20. At the end of the first quarter, Mead was having great success taking the ball to the rim. Taryn Gardner had three baskets plus six free throws for 12 first quarter points.

Then they moved Katie Fifeso onto Gardner and that drive game was cut down quite a bit for Mead. Mead still led on a Gardner three at 23:22. Garfield scored four straight points, took a three point lead at 26:23. Gardner scored again for me to make it 26, 25. Then this basket ended up giving me their final lead of the game.

It's our play of the game Presented by Adams Tractor now to Sierra on the left wing. Dumps it inside. Braun in the lane, spins little left hand scoop shot. Good. And one.

Nice move Natalie Braun fake going over her left shoulder, then spun back to the right with a left handed layup. That was good. And she drew the contact and so Braun completed that three point play. Mead led at 28, 26 and we ended up tied at halftime at 28. Fiso put Garfield on top for good in the fourth quarter of play as she hit the first basket of the fourth quarter.

Make it a 30 to 28 game. They up the lead to four at 32, 28. Meade cut it to two at 32, 30. Garfield took the lead out to five. Mead cut it to three at 35, 32 on a field goal by Cyr.

But then six straight no five straight points for Garfield up the lead to eight. They got the lead to 10 at 44:34. They outscored Meade 16 to six in the third quarter, took a 10 point edge and Meade really didn't cut into that lead tremendously throughout the fourth quarter of play. They could not get it to single digits until the final score. The three pointer by Taryn Gardner at the buzzer 64.

A 63 to 54 in favor of Garfield and the technical foul at the end of the game was not on. Coach Anderson will tell it. Well, I won't tell you who was on, but it was not on the head coach, which I'd kind of surmised, so I'll just correct that right now. Quantay did not get a tactical foul. Somebody else did.

Wasn't a player, wasn't an assistant coach for that matter. So that'll really leave you scratching your head on that one. They shot 28%. All told, 13 of 16 outstanding from the foul line. 81% Garfield just 23 out of 63. They only made 39% in the second half. Made 34% in the first half.

So for the game, 36 and a half percent for Garfield from the field they were 2 out of 9 from the 3 point line. 15 of 20 from the foul line. Game was decided in two spots. Garfield 20 offensive rebounds. They out rebounded Mead 42 to 26.

I mentioned that as being one of the keys to the game. Mead needed to get close to 50, 50 with Garfield in rebounding and they did not. They lost that by 16. And the other one they had to do is be in the plus category in turnovers. Meaning they forced more than they give up in the first half.

They only gave up four turnovers. They forced four so was even you could live with that second half. Mead turned it over 11 times to Garfield and that really is what hurt them in the second half as well as points off turnovers end up being Garfield with 14. Mead with 13. Second chance points.

A little bigger deficit. 14 to 7 in favor of Garfield there individually. Great game again for Taryn Gardner. She had 29 yesterday, 25 today on 7 to 13 shooting from the field, 3 out of 7 from distance, 8 out of 8 from the foul line. She'll be an all tournament player at the end of things tomorrow.

Nine points for Natalie Braun, eight for Addison Wells Morrison. All those coming in the fourth quarter of play. Seven for Mia Sear, two points each for Reese Frederick and Bryn Smith and one for Tiana Horde for Mead's total of 54 for Garfield. Katie Fizeau, 22nd half points on her way to 26 in the ball game. She's being recruited by most of the major programs in the country. MB Jones is going to Wisconsin next year. She had 15 for Garfield, 8 points for Jada Lewis, 6 each for Sarah Lessig and Rekiah Jackson and then 2 points for Nevaeh Talbert for Garfield's total of 63 rebounding. 10 for Fiso, 8 each for the 63 Sarah Lessig and the 6 footer Rekiya Jackson.

8 also for Jada Lewis. As far as the rebounding goes, four rebounds for Horde and for Wells Morrison leading Mead assists. Three for Wells Morrison, two each for Cyr and Braun. No Panther had more than one steal. No, Panther had more than one block shot for Garfield.

Three assists for Fiso to lead them. She also had three steals. Ads did Lessig in this ball game. Lessig and Jones the two six. Three players each had a block shot.
