All right, it's the final game of the 2024 Hardwood Classic. The WIAA Hardwood Classic presented by Giza Federal Credit Union and is the 3A girls championship. As tonight the 261 Mead Panthers will take on the three time defending 3A champ Garfield Bulldogs for the Gold Ball inside the Tacoma Dome. This portion of our pregame show presented by Sturm Heating. Mead comes into this game with a 261 record.

They have won 19 consecutive games. They had a very challenging non conference schedule. They defeated Emerald Ridge and Davis both in non conference games. Both made the four A tournament. They obviously beat Gonzaga Prep during the regular season who also made the 4A tournament and finished in the top two.

They also beat Lakeside who lost in the semifinals of the three yesterday to Garfield and they beat Arlington which placed in the three tournament. So Mead had a very challenging non conference season and they have a 26 and 1 record going into play here this evening. For Garfield they had a hard time finding teams willing to play them. They were 20 and 3 overall on the year, but they didn't play the requisite 20 games in the regular season. Their coaching staff determined they just weren't going to play 20 games to plenty.

20 games. They wanted some games that could challenge them and there weren't a lot of teams that were willing take them on. Camas was one team that would. Camus played for the 4A championship tonight. Camas beat Garfield 6462 in non conference play this year.

Garfield has maybe the best player in girls basketball in the state of Washington and Katie Fiso, who's headed to the University of Oregon. She has scored 49 points in two games in this tournament so far. Garfield last year defeated Mead 6354 in the semifinals. All right, welcome back. As we at the Tacoma Dome they are cutting down nets and they still have not let the teams come out onto the floor. Mead and Garfield to warm up prior to the start of this game. So Eastside Catholic is the 3A champion and the boys play. They beat North.

They beat Mount Spokane yesterday 55 to 53 in the 3A semifinals. Eastside Catholic is the state 3A champion as they knock off Rainier beach by the score of 65 to 57. Here is our scoreboard presented by the Divine Corporation in their fast march located throughout Spokane. So we mentioned the 3A boys east side Catholic depending on beats Rainier beach in the championship game 65 to 57 in the game for third and fifth place. Mount Spokane knocked off O' Day today by the score of 66 to 62 and so Mount Spokane finishes third.

O' Day is the fifth place finisher. Bodie Gardner had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Mount Spokane to the third place finish and then Mount Lake Terrace defeated Garfield 65 to 54 in the fourth and sixth place game. So three a boys Eastside Catholic one Rainier beach two Mount Spokane three Mount Lake Terrace four O' Day five and Garfield six. All right. On the foray girls side it was Camas defeating Gonzaga Prep today with a score of 57 to 41.

Prep also lost to Camas in the first game of the tournament last week and so they lose two in a row to Camas. Ayla Cornwall, the fantastic freshman four at Gonzaga Prep scored 19 points in that game, but congratulations to the Prep girls coach Jeff arty. They finished second in state in 4A other games. Davis knocked off Sumner 5070 to 67 for third place and it was Woodinville defeating Bothell 78 to 70 for fourth place. So again the placings on the 4A girls side, Camas number one, Gonzaga Prep second, Davis third, Sumner excuse me, Woodinville fourth, Sumner fifth and Bothell sixth.

On the 4A boys side for the championship, Mount Sigh beat Richland 72 to 58 and so Mount Cy is the state 4A boys champion. In the game for third place, Glacier Peak knocked off Davis 52 to 47. And in the game for fourth and sixth place, it was Kentwood over Skyview by the score of 69 to 47. So Mount Sigh, number one Richland, number two, Glacier Peak three Kentwood four, Davis of Yakima five and Skyview six. And on the 3A girls side, Lakeside defeated Snohomish 65 to 44 for third place.

And Arlington got fourth place with a 3833 win over Everett. So third place Lakeside, number four Arlington, fifth place Snohomish, sixth place Everett. So I mentioned earlier where Meade defeated Arlington and Lakeside this year. Arlington finishes fourth, Lakeside finishes third. Mead beat both those teams in the non conference.

Garfield split their four games against Lakeside this season and they did not play Arlington on the season. So we'll see whether Meade's tough schedule helps him out here in this ball game as they take on the Garfield Bulldogs. So Eastside Catholic has cut down the net. They're going to get that net restrung. The Mead girls are getting ready to come out onto the floor.

So are the Garfield girls. As we're getting ready for basketball inside the Tacoma Dome. They have got that net restrung. They are sweeping the court right now to get rid of all the glitter and everything else that happened between games. And as soon as that's done, these teams will get to come out onto the floor and get their warm ups underway.

And then we will have basketball. I'm guessing somewhere around 9, 25, maybe this evening. This game starts and we'll take a timeout, be back with more in just a moment. All right, welcome back as we're getting ready for Garfield and Meade in the state 3A girls championship. We have crowned all the other title holders on the 3A 4A side of things.

We just ran down that scoreboard a little bit ago. Now let's go back to the 2022-23 season. The 2023 state tournament, the Tacoma Dome. This portion of our pregame show presented by Eastern Washington University. So in the semifinals last year, it was Garfield taking on Meade for a right to get into the championship game.

It was even at 20 at the end of the first quarter. We were tied at 28 at the half, but Garfield outscored Mead 16 to 6 in the decisive third quarter on their way to a 63:54 win over Meade. Then they defeated Lake Washington. They won their third consecutive state 3A championship. It was Katie Fiso, the star for this Garfield team.

She scored 26 points in the game between these teams Last year. Sarah Lessig is another key player that's coming back for this Garfield team. She had six points. Another key player, Jada Lewis who played last year, she scored eight points in that ball game. So those three players coming back ended up scoring what 40 out of Garfield.

64 points, 63 points in that ball game. And Garfield came up with a victory for Meade. Taran Gardner scored 25 points to lead them in that ball game. She was the only player in double figures. Addison Wells Morrison scored eight.

Mia Cyr had seven in that game Last year Mead went on, they won their game for third and fifth place defeating Arlington 69 to 67 and Garfield went on as I mentioned to their state championship. So these teams played last year. Mead looking for some revenge this year as they take on Garfield here in the state finals on the 3A girls side. I'm just going back now to the 22 season. Yeah, Meade did not play Garfield in that one.

They defeated Stanwood, lost to Lake Washington who played in the final game against Garfield, lost by one to Lake Washington. Then they lost to Arlington in the game for third and fifth two years ago. So that's went on. That's what went on with the with the Mead girls that season and this past season and with the rivalry these two teams have going. Though they did not play in the regular season this year, as I mentioned, Garfield had a had a tough non conference schedule but they didn't play a full complement of games.

They play in the very rugged Metro League where they played Lakeside during the regular season three times and then played him again in the non in the non league schedule. Garfield had a nine game winning streak going on until they played Lakeside in the district playoffs and lost 60 to 43. That kind of put them into a position where they weren't going to get a top state seed. They ended up getting seeded six. They defeated Snohomish 46 to 40 to earn their way into state.

They got that six seed. They defeated Bonnie, excuse me. They defeated Everett 54 to 43 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. They got 18 steals in that game and then they defeated Lakeside or excuse me, they defeated. Yeah, they defeated Lakeside yesterday and that put them into this state championship game.

Garfield led by Katie Fiso, she is headed to the University of Oregon. She is a fantastic player and the Meade Panthers are going to have their hands full with her this evening. She is a tall point guard, has some size on Taryn Gardner. She's a very good player. And so as I said she's headed the University of Oregon, but they have two other potential Division 1 recruits who are just juniors and they are Sarah Lessig who is a 6, 2 or 3 wing.

Garfield does not put their heights on their, on their roster. And so I don't know the exact heights of some of these players. And then Jada Lewis is also a very good player. Lessig in the two games in this state tournament has scored 32 points. She's grabbed 14 rebounds, Fiso 49 points.

She has taken down 12 rebounds in the two games and Lewis has only scored 10 points but she has 23 rebounds and she has eight steals as well. So both these teams really pressure the basketball. They get a ton of steals each of them. Mead forced all sorts of turnovers against Bonnie Lake. They disrupted Snohomish as well as far as doing stuff with their offense.

So both these teams tremendous defensive teams and that might be what it comes down to who can defend the other better. Taryn Gardner was cold yesterday from the field. Maybe she comes back with an extra hot game here this evening. Addison Wells Morrison scored 26 in the first game between these teams. We'll see what happens as these two teams get ready to tip it off from the Tacoma Dome.

And we are awaiting the start of this game. As I said, it's probably going to be about 9:25, maybe even closer to 9:30 before this game tips off tonight in Tacoma. And with that we will be back and we'll have a timeout here and we'll come back and I'm going to talk until I can't talk anymore. And we need to take another break as we await the start of this ball game here. It's Meade taking on Garfield in the state 3A girls championship.

Excuse me, a lot of games involving two top 25 teams today. Number four Tennessee one at 14th ranked Alabama. Also today number five Marquette lost at 12th ranked Creighton. It was number seven Kansas losing at number 15 Baylor. Number 18 South Carolina beat 24th ranked Florida today as well.

Number 13 Illinois won as did 6th ranked Kentucky. Number 6 Arizona was a victor today as was 8th ranked Iowa State. Number 9 North Carolina beat North Carolina State. 11th ranked Auburn defeated Mississippi State. Number 10 Duke an easy winner over Virginia by the score of 73 to 48.

Number 19 Washington state got a big win at home as they knock off UCLA by the score of 77 to 65. Number 25 South Florida winner today. Number 23 Gonzaga. Big win as the Zags knock off 17th ranked St. Mary's by the score of 70 to 57 as Ruben Nemhardt came up with 20 points and 10 assists in the.

Ryan Nemhardt I'm sorry, Ruben Nemhardt was an old player at Weber State years and years ago. Ryan Nemhardt 20 points, 10 assists in that ballgame for Gonzaga they go to 14 and two in the WCC and St. Mary's their first conference loss. St. Mary's at 15 and one now in the WCC in the big Sky Conference.

Earlier today the Eastern Washington Eagles got a victory in a wild game. The Eagles defeat Montana State by the score of 108 to 104 in overtime. Cedric Coward scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds in that game for the Eagles. And the Eastern Washington women also won today as they defeated Montana State on the last second shot by Jamie Loretta by the score of 52 to 50. So that's what happened with our area teams.

Idaho, their men lost to Montana and the they lost 80 to 57 to Montana. The Idaho women also lost to Montana as well. So we're about ready for the teams to head to their benches here. That's going to be coming up here very shortly inside the Tacoma Dome as the officials are headed toward the scorers table and the teams are one team is still warming up, the other team is huddling on the floor near the center circle or not, excuse me, near the basket.

Their end of the floor. As we get ready for basketball here this evening as Garfield and Meade get ready to do battle. Mead looking to cap their season with only one loss. They lost to Nooksack Valley earlier this year and Nooksack Valley has had a very good year of their own. And Garfield with three losses, two to Lakeside and one to Camas, the foray state champions again today.

The results from the Greater Spokane League. In case you missed it, the Mount Spokane boys defeated O' Day 66 to 62. Bodie Gardner 18 points, eight rebounds and Mount Spokane finishes third in the state 3A boys and then a game played about four hours ago. The Gonzaga Prep girls lost the state 4A championship game. They fell to Camas by the score of 57 to 41 and Ayla Cornwall had 19 points to lead Gonzaga Prep in that game.

But Prep loses to Camas by the score of 57 to 41. The other GSL teams in the tournament, North Central boys, they were eliminated on Friday in the 3A side of things. And the Gonzaga Prep boys were eliminated on the 4A side of things yesterday as well. So all the games have been played in the state Hardwood Classic going on in the Tacoma Dome except for one. And we'll have that play by play of this game coming up for you in just a moment or two is Mead looks for the state championship and looks to dethrone Garfield.

Garfield is looking for their fourth consecutive 38 championship and they'll hope to get it Here against Meade this evening. Should be a whale of a game. Both teams defeated Snohomish this season by six points. Mead defeated Lakeside, the third place team on the 3A ranks by one by two points, one point or two points earlier this year. Garfield split four games with Lakeside winning two and losing two.

So it promises to be a whale of a game coming up in just a little bit between Meade and Garfield. Wells Morrison, 6ft tall and a sophomore. Also starting for Meade will be Reese Frederick. She is 59 and a sophomore. She scored 14 points in the two games at state so far. Taryn Gardner, the 59 senior, will go.

She has scored 38 points. She has 12 rebounds, nine assists and five steals. And Mia Sear, 5 10, a senior. She has 10 points in the two games at state will also start as well. So Smith, Wells, Morrison, Frederick Gardner and Cyr.

Everybody five, nine or taller. For the Meade Panthers. For the Garfield Bulldogs, coached by Kevin Johnson and Roy Smiley. They will look like this in their starting lineup. Maya Davis will start.

She is a senior. She scored 19 points in the two state tournament games. Star Smiley will get the start as well. She is a sophomore. She scored six points against Lakeside and those are her only six points here at state so far.

Also starting for Garfield will be Katie Fiso. She is their point guard. She has scored 49 points in the two games, 12 rebounds. She has five assists as well. They will also start Sarah Lessig.

She has scored 32 points with 14 rebounds in the two games. Lessig is junior and Jada Lewis will start as well. She is also a junior. Lewis has scored 10 points, but she's grabbed 23 rebounds and has had eight steals in those two games. So there you have it.

The starting lineups for these ball games as we get ready, as the starters are being introduced to the crowd here even as we speak here from the Tacoma Dome as we get ready for basketball action here this evening. So these teams once again played last year with Garfield defeating Meade in the semifinals 63 to 54. Katie Fiso had a big game and so did, so did Taron Gardner. And they're going up against each other, both Division 1 college signees. Fiso at the University of Oregon, Gardner at Boise State, both playing at high level programs.

And so that's going to be a very interesting here to see how this all plays out. Garfield is the home team this game. They'll be wearing their white uniforms. Mead will be in their road blue with white numerals and trimmed in gold and the white lettering with Mead across the front of their jerseys. Garfield in their home whites as the lineups are being introduced here.

Garfield, a very tall team, They've got some very big players. They're going to have the size advantage on Mead here in this game. So can the Panthers counteract that? Usually Meade is able to do that with pressure defense. But when you've got maybe the best point guard in the state or the second best point guard in the state with Taryn Gardner right there with her and Katie Fiso, it'll be interesting to see how Meade can do in this ball game with their pressure defense.

They played on even terms with Garfield last year. Except for the third quarter of play. Garfield outscored Mead 166 in that third quarter last year. Garfield got the victory over Meade in that ball game. Well, I predicted a start of around 9:25.

That's about the time the lineups and the teams were introduced to the crowd. And so we're going to get started pretty close to 9:30 in this ball game here this evening as the starting lineups have been completed. Now everybody has been introduced. They've all done the elaborate handshakes that you see anymore. You've got a, you know, run through your tunnel of players and then there's somebody at the end of the bench and you do a fancy handshake with them or whatever and then you go fist bump all the officials and the opposing head coach and the other girl that just got introduced for the other team.

And then you go and you fist bump all your own people. And then the next team goes through and the same thing goes around. And it's all done as we go here. So Garfield in their home whites with Garfield in print across the front in purple and the purple numerals and Meade and the road blues here in this ball game. The officials on the floor.

We're ready to go and we're getting set for the center jump. And we've got basketball happening tonight on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM. Our final high school broadcast of the year as Mead and Garfield get ready for the state 3A girls championship. This opening tip off here is going to be presented by Papa Murphy's Pizza.

Smith will retreat with the dribble guarded by Lessig. Gets it on the right wing now to Wells. Morrison fakes right, goes left to the foul line. Starts to back her way and can't get a shot off. Kicks it out now to Sears.

She'll feed it over to Gardiner on the left wing. Gardner drives, dumps it inside through the hands of Sear. Out of bounds. It'll be Garfield basketball as Meade turns it over in their opening possession of the game. A little nervousness maybe here.

Mead has not played for a state championship at the 3A level. We'll see and none of these. They've played high profile games, but they haven't played in a championship game. Here comes Garfield Fiso racing down the left side into the four court. As they beat the Mead pressure.

Cyr draws the guard of Fiso to start this game. She'll give it back now to Lewis who will dribble to the right wing. Pitch it up top to Smiley. She'll give it to Davis. Now around it comes to Fiso on the left wing.

She will drive in the lane, pull up, pop from 12ft. Is good. Katie Fiso puts Garfield on top in this 1, 2 to nothing. The University of Oregon signee with 49 points in the first two games of state gets the first basket of the night. Here comes Taryn Gardner into the four court.

She'll dribble right, give it away on the wing to Addison Wells. Morrison drives into the foul line, dumps a pass inside again off the hands of this time Bryn Smith, she couldn't haul it in under the basket. And so two possessions, two turnovers on the Mead Panthers so far in this ball game. So two nothing in favor of Garfield. Full court pressure on Fiso beats it easily feeds up the right side.

So it's going to be another year before she's ready to, well, not quite a year probably before she's ready to commit to a college. And she makes her first free throw it. And it's taken by Taron Gardner for Meade. Here comes Gardner out of the backcourt. We've played just over two minutes now in the first quarter. Gardner starts to back her way into the lane. Gets around a defender, Puts one up off the glass.

And good Taron Gardner gets her first basket of the ball game. And the first hoop for Meade. It comes about 2 minutes and 15 seconds into the proceedings. 4 2. Garfield again.

They beat the Meade pressure. Fiso with it out high on the left side. Walks it into the wing, dribble drive to the baseline. Got right to the rim for a layup. That's good.

Here's a first half recap.

Garfield scored the first four points, Meade rallied to tie the game for the first time at 6. We were tied at 8. We were tied at 10. Mead took their first lead at 12 to 10. We were tied at 12.

Mead retook the lead at 14 to 12, but then Garfield hit a three pointer and made it a 15 to 14 or a three point play. I should say made a 15 to 14 play or a lead rather. Mead tied the game at 16 and then they took a 1916 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mead got a three pointer from Taryn Gardner, punched their lead up to four at 24 to 20. It would get no bigger than that big.

The biggest lead of the first half was four points. Each team had a four point lead at one point in time. Mead led at 26:22. Garfield rallied, tied the game at 26A. Brin Smith three made it 29:26.

Mead Garfield came back, took a 30 to 29 lead, led 32:29. But Meade hit three points down the stretch and were tied for the eighth time at 32. Now at the intermission here in this ball game, Taron Gardner a fantastic first half so far. She has 16 points but only got three of her points there in the second quarter of play for Mead. Mead was outscored 16 to 13 in that second quarter of play.

Bryn Smith and Addison Wells Morrison both have 5 and for Garfield Katie Fiso has 15 points in the first half of play. Finals from the other games today in the concern GSL teams the Gonzaga Prep girls lost to camis for the 4A championship. Thornton is out there along with Wells, Morrison, Gardner, Wenkheimer and Frederick, I believe for Meade. Hall is out there with Lessig, Fiso, Davis and Lewis for Garfield. Here comes Ellie Thornton. She'll bring the ball up into the forecourt. Lost the dribble.

Goes back to get it and crosses the timeline and now dribbles across the top to the left side from the right. Now turns back, goes back over to the right, still dribbling. The postgape show comes your way next. All right. It is a heartbreak for the Meade Panthers. They lose for just the second time in the 2023-24 season. They fall in the state tournament championship game losing to Garfield by the score of 62 to 59.

Here in this ball game, this portion of our postgame, our recap presented by the swinging doors. We had 12 lead, excuse me, 12 ties in this basketball game. We had six lead changes in this game. Our first tie came at six. We were tied at eight, tied at 10.

Mead took their first lead and 12 to 10, we were tied at 12. We volleyed the lead around a little bit. Tied again at 16. Mead scored the last three points of the first quarter of play and they took a 1916 lead. At the end of the first quarter they upped that lead to four, which was be their biggest of the game on a Taryn Gardner for three at 24 to 20.

She started out like a house on fire in this game with 16 early points. After that three pointer, Mead still led by 4, 26, 24. Garfield came back, tied the game at 26. A three by Bryn Smith put Mead on top 29, 26. But then four points made it 32 to 29 as Garfield took the lead back and at the half it was 32.

Excuse me, before, just before the half, 32, 29. Then Mead tied it at the end of the first half at 32. And that was the eighth tie of the first half of play. The teams were tied at 34, tied at 36, tied at 38. Then Garfield took a five point edge at 43, 38.

Meade would not lead in the second half after they had a 3432 lead in this ball game early in the third quarter. So it's 4338 they up the lead. Garfield did to six at 47, to 41, then to seven at 49, 42. Meade got the last basket of the third quarter apply and Garfield led it 49 44. Going into the pivotal fourth quarter.

Meade cut it to one at 49, 48. McGarfield took the lead back to five at 53, 48. Meade cut it to one again at 53, 52. Then two free throws by Addison Wells. Morrison tied it at 56, but Katie Fiso hit one three to put Garfield up three, then a second to put Garfield up six.

And then this play down the stretch in the last minute gave Meade an opportunity near the end of the game to try to tie the game. And it's our play of the game presented by Adams tractor. Here's a three. Wenkheimer. She got it.

A Damon Orthodontics three. A huge shot for Gracie Wenkheimer, her first basket of the game makes it 62. 59 and a timeout is taken with 47 and 110 seconds remaining to play here in the fourth quarter. So Wenkheimer hit the big three, made it 62, 59. Then Garfield came down, they turned the ball over, Meade got the ball back, had it with about 15 seconds to play, couldn't get a shot off.

Ball goes out of bounds and Mead gets the ball back with just over three seconds remaining. And they had to inbound on the sidelines. They got it to Kit Taron Gardner, but Katie Fiso right in her hip pocket kept Gardiner from getting a good shot off. Gardner tried to throw up a three pointer in desperation. It was well short.

Might even have been partially blocked by Fiso. And the final score, Garfield 62, Meade 59 in a whale of a game between these two teams, heartbreak for Meade. They finished third last year, they finished second this year and for Garfield, their fourth consecutive title. Katie Fiso played four years of varsity for Garfield. She won four state championships for Garfield.

They shoot 18 out of 41 in the ballgame. Mead 18 out of 41 from the field. That ended up being 44%. They were three out of 17. It's all from the three point line for 18% and 20 of 29 from the foul line.

They had they shot, okay, 69%. Excuse me, 69%. But they had a lot of opportunities and in a three point game that's kind of a bitter pill to swallow. Garfield 25 out of 46 from the field, 54%. They were two out of four from the three point line in this game, both by Fiso down the stretch.

They hadn't made a three until Fiso hit those two at the end and they were 10 out of 12 from the foul line. So 83% versus 69%. If Garfield or if Mead had shot 83% from the foul line that I had five more points, maybe they'd have won the ballgame. You never know how that would have turned out. All right, individually in this game, Taran Gardner in her final high school game played a fantastic game.

7 out of 17 from the field, 7 out of 8 from the foul line. 22 points for Taryn Gardner. She was the only Mead player in double figures. Nine for Addison Wells Morrison, who was one out of six from the field, but seven out of eight from the foul line. Seven each for Bryn Smith and Caroline Spink, six for Mia Sear, four for Reese Frederick, three for Gracie Wenkheimer and one point for Ellie Thornton.

For Meade's total of 59. Garfield led by Katie Fiso 29 points in this ball game on 12 out of 22 shooting from the field, three out of three from the three free throw line. She was two out of four from the three point arc as well. Mia Cyr ended her season as a senior as well, but three outstanding sophomore, four outstanding sophomores coming back plus the freshman and Ellie Thornton. So this Meade team is going to be right back in there as a contender for state once again in the 202425 season.

It's time now for our Player of the Game and as it probably should be very fittingly, Taran Gardner is our Player of the Game presented by Alliant Insurance Services. Gardner again, another big game with 22 points. She grabbed seven rebounds as we mentioned, three assists in the ball game. Had a couple of steals as well. So east side Catholic, Rainier Beach, Mount Spokane, Montlake Terrace, O' Day and Garfield are the ones threw six placers. On the 3A boys side. 4A girls Camas knocked off Gonzaga Prep 57 to 41, Davis over Sumner 70 to 67. Woodinville beat Bothell 78 to 70, Camas 1, Prep 2, Davis 3, Woodinville 4, Sumner 5 and Bothell 6. And on the 4A boys side, Mount Cy beat Richland for the title 5072 58.
