One of the very best high school basketball games in the state that you are liable to see this year with Steve Pry back in our studio and the great Paul Storenson standing alongside ready to go. My name is Greg Talbot with your Play by play tonight. It is so great to have you with us for meet in Central Valley.

As we get started on the pregame show, let's go ahead and talk to John Barrington, the Meade athletic director before tip off here. John, start of the second semester, everything's still kind of up in the air with the world the way it is. But how are things going here Meade? You know, I think it's been a battle for everybody. It's been tough on our coaches.

We're looking to get back in a little bit of a rhythm as far as our schedules go. You know, we survived coming back minus the test coming back from winter break, but we've rallied a lot of support from our district and our nursing staff and our coaches have all rallied. So we're just looking forward to get back in a rhythm, something steady we hope. Tell us a little bit about wrestling coming up here. I know that that's, you know, everyone's a little confused about what's been going on the last couple months, but you guys are strong.

What's the status on wrestling? It was difficult. It's been difficult planning for wrestling, not knowing where the state was going to land with a proposed change to our regional format. But we just got word here a little bit ago that things are going to be as normal. Great.

So we're looking forward next Friday, Saturday out at Cheney, we're doing the 2A 3A district tournament. Four days will be at Lewis and Clark and then a regional tournament following leading up to state. Good news. And then like we said, bottom of the hour, you have Central Valley meet, girls basketball coming up. A home stretch of basketball here, obviously.

Women's team unbelievably strong. What about the other winter sports here at me, you know? Well, we got a really strong wrestling team. That's really important the way that thing turned out here recently. But.

And we have a couple of really big matches coming up for the boys. We wrestle university tomorrow and then we're at Mount Spokane to close out our regular season on the mat. So. And that's two other top teams in the league. So looking forward to those opportunities and again to watch our girls and our guys play tonight.

And like we said was girls basketball team here at Mead, in case you at home have not been following it, they are undefeated. They are 13 and oh, you get to see them here every day at school. You get to go to the practices, you follow them around. What has made this team so special so far, undefeated halfway through a season is really something. It is, you know, and it's just.

I think what it is right now is it's a mix of young and old. You know, we've got a couple seniors that lead and we've got some really talented younger girls that are contributing quite a bit. And maybe a couple surprises for coach. Just really good basketball and. And they continue to get better.

So we'll be talking a lot about this game. In the meantime though, let's tell you what's going on around the rest of the GSL tonight. All the girls matchups are also all the boys matchups. So these games we read off, you will have those at 5:30 and then at 7 as well.

For the girls tonight, you, Hyatt, Cheney just about to get underway. Clarkston at East Valley got a really good one tonight. Paul. Lewis and Clark at Mount Spokane. Girls and boys double header.

That'll be fun. Well listen, Clark, Ferris and Mount Spokane was at Donnybrook literally on Friday. I mean it was. They went after each other. It was carnage.

So hopefully they'll be able to kind of have cooler heads. But Elsie's coming in with an attitude. Mouseville can is a very, very good basketball team and I tell you it's going to be a tough game. Other doubleheaders in action tonight. Gonzaga Prep at North Central, Ferris out at Ridgeline in the Valley, Rogers at Shadl and Pullman at West Valley.

I'll tell you though, Paul, though those are fun games. We got the best ones tonight. You know, I'm really excited to see this meat. Patrick. We were going to do this a month ago, but then we had ice storm, you know, from Double Toothpick.

Don't remind me. I was doing Brody's trying to go down division. I think you were stuck in a tree up on the south hill just about. You had no chance whatsoever. We got to get you up to speed, get your ice legs better and you know, but I'll tell you, that was as nasty as it's been and it took me an hour and 20 minutes to go basically eight miles.

But we're here, we're making it up. We have CV Meat girls. Paul, what are your keys to the game? Well, here's the key. MEAT has been blowing people out and I think they have as good, they have as good a chance to make a run at state and have a great chance for the state championship.

Central Valley. Let's talk about them. Initially. They've got some players they like to get up and down the court. They're going to pressure your three quarter court.

They basically try to take the transition away from you and make you play set offenses. So me, they don't want me to be able to run the ball and they've got to be able to take me three point shot away from them. If Mead gets hot from the outside, that's going to be a tough day for Central Valley. Meade does what Meade does. They've got some playmakers.

Unfortunately. Horde is going to be one of their fine players. Is out with an ankle. She hurt her ankle last Friday and was out doing rehab. Thought she might be able to come back in.

She's not going to be able to do it. So you've got some other gals that are going to be able to have to step up and make plays. But this is a very talented basketball team and I'll tell you, I love the way Quanta Anderson has coached these girls. They're going to play hard, they're going to play great defense and they're going to have transition and try to take it out. You bet.

All right, Meade Central Valley girls coming your way here at the bottom of the hour. Greg Talbot and Paul Sorensen here for this one. Let's go ahead and give you a look at our starting lineups. Now, obviously, the Central Valley Bears. When you hear that, Paul, you hear Central Valley girls basketball.

Usually, if you're from Spokane, like, it'll make you shudder because this is a national championship team. Players off at Stanford. But CV this year is the underdog tonight, if you can believe it. Here's their starting five. Autumn Agnew, the five seven junior at guard along with the freshman Eden Sanders had a great year at 5 foot 7.

Elsewhere, Skyler Newman is a wing. Gabby Wilson is another freshman at 5 foot 6. And then the senior leading them down low, the 5 foot 11, Natalie Brown. They're guard heavy. They are guard heavy.

They have four seniors on this team of which only one start. So it's really pretty much a young team from that standpoint. They're doing a nice job of developing, you know, some chemistry. And the old Gonzaga player, not all the young Gonzaga. Former Gonzaga playboy Felicia Orell is the head coach.

She's done a nice job with this program. She's kind of been a calming influence along those lines and I like the way she gets things done. And the starting lineup for the 13, 0 and 3 and oh, and GSL Mead Panthers led by Quanta Anderson. Here's their starting five and it's a fearsome five. Some Alicia Suggs tonight will take the starting guard spot out with Tiana Horde out with an injury.

Elsewhere things are normal. Natalie Braun, Olivia Moore, Taryn Gardiner and Haley Burns. This team Paul could win state, no question. I agree. And they have five seniors as well.

But three of those five start so they've been battle tested for an awfully long time and that's been the thing that's made it very, very impressive. So Quante has got a heck of a team. He's been to state, he's been able to win state. He knows what it takes to get there. But it's a grinder in the GSL and tonight's going to be an example of that.

This Meade team has beat everybody in the gsl, some of them twice in addition to teams from outside the area like Moses Lake, Sunnyside, Eisenhower. But they beat Ferris twice, they beat LC twice, they beat Mount Spokane twice. This team is not joking around. I agree and I think it's going to be a great game. And who's going to put who's will on the other team?

And I'll tell you what, there. There could be no better game for us to all come back together for because there are some good boys games coming up over the next couple of weeks with all the rivalry games that got rescheduled to February, but if you had to point to one girls basketball game and all of Eastern Washington this year, this is the one you would have circled. I would agree. And next on Friday, we're going to be out at West Valley for the first time. West Valley Rogers.

And we'll be able to do that game as well. So that'll be fun to be you and Deontay. And you'll hear some goofy overweight guy trying to run up and down the court that you can boo if you'd like. We. If you think we're not going to tease you during the course of that broadcast in your cute little referee uniform, Paul, we're going to.

I certainly would hope so. I do look like I should be going to jail with that outfit, though. That's. That's the part that's a little disappointing. That's just for what you do on your weekend, going this way instead of this way.

So Central Valley here, like we said, this is a team that was national champion. Like, this was about as good as it gets. Of course, teams get young, teams get old, things change. But if there were one team and one coaching staff that you would say could put together a really good game plan to compete with Quanta, Anderson and Mead, I think you would say Central Valley would probably be the one and I would agree.

But I think you just look at me strength and their senior leadership, even though they're down a little bit with. With Horde out, the junior guard, five, nine, hurt her ankles. She'll probably be back hopefully by the weekend, but you know how ankles are. Could be, you know, a day at a time kind of thing. So good basketball crew.

I like the blue, though. They're nice. But traditionally, when you think of cv, you think the powder blue and the white. That's true. They were in black uniforms with their powder blue trim tonight.

So a little bit different for CV Kind of looks, you know, UC Davis kind of Cal Berkeley ish, you know, in terms of the darker blue, the light blue, in my opinion. So there you go. All right, so Central Valley driving left to right, me driving right to left. The ball is in the air. The tip is one and controlled by Central Valley.

It was Natalie Brown who did it. And here they go to bring it across. We have Skylar Newman out at the top of the key. She dribbles left, dribbles right. Handed off around the screen to Ellen Sanders.

Tries to penetrate. She cannot. Goes back on top to Gabby Wilson. She curls around a screen. 10 seconds on the shot clock.

Centrale taking all the time running ball, screens at the top of the key. Autumn Agnew goes left, tries to pass it to the corner. It's tipped away by Alicia Suggs. Out of bounds. This is going to stay CV Ball with four on the shot clock.

Slugs is such a good defender now, you're gonna have to get a quick shot off for Central Valley, so they're gonna have to catch and shoot here. It's gonna be tough. Good defense so far. Here's Autumn Agnew on the inbound, gets it into Natalie Brown. That ball tipped away.

Out of bounds again. It'll be CV Ball to inbound with two on the clock. Testing everything right now. Their defense is very stout. Again, it's Autumn Magnew on the far side of the court on the inbound.

Bounce that into Paige Jackson goes around the screen, goes back to Agnew. Big three on the way. She hit it in, but it's a shot clock violation. The three does not count. Boy, that was close.

Dan Adams was the one that made that call on that. Just. Just was still hanging on her hand when she made that shot. Very close. So still no score.

Nothing. Nothing here between the Mead and seavee girls. 40 seconds into this game, Mead going right to left across your radio dial. And they work it across to Taryn Gardner on the left wing. She's guarded by Agnew.

Drives left, drives right, goes back out to the top of the key. Swings it over to Haley Burns, the 6:1 senior. She goes around the ball screen to Taryn Gardner. She drives right down the lane. Right hand hook around and out.

No good. And yanked down by Paige Jackson. And here comes CV Back the other way. Still no score. Just a little bit more than minute in.

It's Autumn Magnew out top, goes around a ball screen, pivoting left on the block. Now left on the block, right on the block. Goes into the corner to Gabby Wilson. Goes up with a right hand. She handed it off to Paige Jackson and she had it.

It's good for two to nothing Central Alley here in the early going me undefeated 13 and oh this year. Let's see what they're able to do tonight. They bring it across to Elisa Suggs. She's wide open on the left baseline, on the right block rather. And she banks it in 2 2.

And here comes CV going back left to right. Now this is a national champion team just a couple of years ago, but they are the underdog tonight and their black jerseys driving left to right. Out of the top of the key it is Paige Jackson, the 6 foot 2 junior, although she looks bigger and stronger than that, hands it off around the screen to Ellen Sander. Goes back out top. A three will not go.

Paige Jackson tries to tip it away, goes out of bounds. The ball will stay with CV Actually, I thought that that meat should get that ball. I thought that was tipped off by Central Valley. But they're going to get the ball back here and, and put it underneath under the, under the basket. Here's Autumn Agnew, the 57 junior point guard to inbound it.

They work it out off the inbound to the top of the key. And it's Ellen Sander. Dribbles left, dribbles right. She can't get by Alicia Suggs. Goes down to automagnew, fires it down onto the right post to Paige Jackson.

Tipped out of bounds again. It'll still be CV ball with 19 on the clock. That's why this team is really good because they defend you everywhere on the court. You get inside a half court and they're inside your jersey. They do such a good job on that matchup defense.

Agnew the five seven junior to inbound it again on the right side of the floor. She fires a chest pass into Ellen Sander. She drives right down the Lane goes up with a left handed shot and it's good off the backboard. 4 to 2, CV and all of a sudden here comes Mead really pushing the pace down the floor. They find Taryn Gardner underneath the basket and she lays it in in quick Response in transition.

4 to 4, tie game. 5:30 to go here and the first quarter between CV and me. GSL girls basketball on your radio here on this Tuesday night. It's automatic new at the top of the key now for Central Valley. It's tipped away.

Here comes Taryn Gardner the other way. She collects, goes up with the left hand, does not get fouled, shot won't go. But Haley Burns, the six one senior there for the put back and it's good. Nice job on the rebound on the putback, but great defense that started that transition. Six to four.

Here it is Mead on top of Central Valley. And the Panthers lead for the first time tonight. Here comes CB across the court. Ellen Sander puts up a shot from the right wing. It won't go.

And Mead has the rebound. And here they come the other way, wide open in transition. Haley Burns underneath the basket. She's got it for two. It's 84 mead.

That was a quick turnaround, Paul. That was nice hands too to get that ball up on the glass. Four points for Burns, four unanswered and very nearly six unanswered here for Meade. And now the lead eight to four on top of Central Valley. Bears on the right side of the floor.

They feed down low to the six two. Paige Jackson. Her shot won't go. Haley Burns with the rebound and the Panthers will push back the other way. Man, did this does me team like to run in transition.

I agree, they really, really do. Here's Olivia Moore, the senior guard standing at five foot eight at the top of the key. She goes right wing to Natalie Braun. They swing it around the key, back into the corner. It's more for three.

Bang shot 11 to four, Mead. And how about that is a seven nothing run for the Panthers. I'm surprised Stevie doesn't want a timeout yet. We have a foul on the floor. Suggs on her with her first foul.

That's actually pretty clean game. 412 into this thing first follow the game. So nice job that way. Way to move their feet. Good job defensively by both Central Valley and me.

That was a foul on the 510 senior wing. Alicia Suggs for the Panthers. It goes back the other way. Central Valley on offense trailing 11 to 4. They work it down low on the post.

Shot goes up from Newman, it won't fall. Second chance opportunity from Wilson. No. Mead's got the rebound and they push it back again. Going right to left across your radio dial.

They run, run, run here with the Mead girls basketball team. This is a fast paced team. Haley Burns on the block, works her way into the paint, passes back outside to Gardiner. They go back down low to Burns, backs down to the basket, back to Gardner on the wing for three. Yes.

When you look at the rebounding, I thought Central Valley did an excellent job. They got a ton of offensive rebounds 6 7, 10, 11, 12, 30, 40. Looks like we got 26 rebounds for Central Valley, 22 for me, so pretty close from that standpoint. A lot of offense was stealing. Yeah, they were getting steals and you look at the steals, there were 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 steals for me, along with three blocks and a and a bevy of assists.

So overall, you know, eight turnovers for, for the Meat Panthers and unfortunately it looks like 19 turnovers for Central Valley. And that was the bugaboo tonight. On the girls side, the boys game is coming coming up next and this is going to be a good basketball game as well. Final score 65 to 20. Meat stays undefeated. But I really like what I saw. I'm impressed by this Meat girls team.

I think they've got a great chance at a heck of a run at state. Yeah, this meat girls basketball team beat Central Valley 65 to 20. They stay undefeated on the season 14. And oh, they've now beat the best other teams in the Greater Spokane League twice. Yeah, they're going to continue to do that and I'll tell you, I don't, I don't see anybody on the girls side really challenging Mead right now.

They continue to play at that tempo. That's impressive. Coming up elsewhere this week on the Arby's GSL game of the week. We are out at West Valley on Friday. Rodgers at West Valley Friday night at 7.

I'll be calling the game with former Eastern Star to Hante Hayes. Paul will be eating a burger at half court in a referee uniform because he'll be refereeing the game. Be nice to me, okay? You know it's hard for old people to get up and down the court, especially when you can't see the basket at half court because my one eye is not working. So you know it's going to be fun.
