Joined here for our pregame show interview by John Barrington, the Mead High School Athletic Director as we get ready to kick off a whole new year of high school athletics. School started off in The GSL this week, John. Obviously.

Meade. So successful in so many programs. Softball was great last year, wrestling. Tell us about what you have for fall sports. Well, you know, the sounds in the hallways picked up quite a bit here on Tuesday, right, with the start of school, like you mentioned.

And so, yeah, those things are going on. We're excited to be back. We just. We're following a soccer game here tonight. Our girls soccer team picked up their first one against Eastmont, played well.

So we're excited to go at it tonight here with football. We got dads on the field warming up with their dads and uncles warming up with their players. So, yeah, exciting night here Thursday night. Really fun. A little bit of a bummer that you guys have to wait a couple weeks into the season for your first true football full Friday night home game of the season.

One school is in. How are your. How is everyone on the football program getting ready for a short week so early into the year? Well, I know coaches were worried about it, right. Especially when they saw that on the schedule.

Maybe it was nice to start with the non league, didn't have to travel. That made it a little bit easier. So, yeah, here we are on Thursday. He's got them ready though, I'm sure. And with school starting.

Yeah, all those variables come into play, no doubt about it. Here with John Barrington, the Mead athletic director here on our pregame show between University High School in me, John, what else does Mead have coming up this fall? That. That you want to pitch? Well, yeah, we got.

We got a lot going on. We got volleyball playing in their first matches tomorrow night at at home against University. Softball is going to play their third game. They've already picked up two wins in their early season. Like I said, soccer picked up their first one here just an hour or so ago.

Heading to Moses Lake this weekend. Both our boys and girls cross country teams are heading to the Highlander this weekend over at Shadow Park. And yeah, we're looking forward to our guys bouncing back from a tough game last week. One thing I do want to ask you about, John, is now that we're a couple years away from the COVID pandemic, right, Last year at the beginning of school, everyone felt a little bit iffy because only the previous year we'd been in masks.

But I can't help but notice as someone that works in education, the further away we get, the more normal this is all starting to feel again. I would agree, Greg. Yeah, it's great for our kids. They're not looking over their shoulder and they're not worried about things. I mean really, we've had to battle some heat and some smoke.

Knock on wood. We hope that doesn't hit us again here this fall. Last couple days been beautiful fall weather like we, you know, we're used to. Lucky us, the great John Barrington here on the pregame show. John, thank you so much.

We're getting ready to bring you University High at Mead out here at Union Stadium for what, Paul, is it it's third or fourth year of existence? It is a great place to watch some football, but it's going to have a little competition coming up as the downtown stadium is nearly done for the rest of the gsl. So for tonight's game, U High and Mead going off at the top of the hour. These are two teams, Paul, that are looking for their first win.

U high lost to Mt. Spokane by 27 in week one. Mead was a little bit closer with Eastmont, but in their loss, their loss a little more understandable because one of their quarterbacks, Riker Herd, went down. He's going to be out for a while. Yeah, he is.

Here are the ones we're looking at. Rodgers is playing Grangeville, Moscow, Pullman. Fun to have that rivalry game so early in the season, Paul.

That'll be nasty. That'll be good in Moscow or in Pullman. I didn't. Maybe they'll meet in the middle. They'll just close off that little road between the two school notes.

Play right in the pavement. Old school. That'd be fun. Lakeside is playing East Valley. Shadow park has Riverside.

Colville is taking on North Central in a smaller school versus bigger school game. West Valley Is taking on Lakeland. And then we get to some already head to head GSL matchups. Cheney and Ferris going head to head tomorrow night. Lewis and Clark, Central Valley.

Potentially a sneaky good game. LC did a great job in the battle of the South Hill. They smoked Ferris. They look pretty darn good. They've got a.

They got an athlete, a little running back corner that I really like. I think he's going to have an opportunity to go on and play for Lewis and Clark. And you know, that's, that's just going to be a good game. It'll be nice and physical between those two teams elsewhere. Speaking of, Union Stadium mounts book and is playing Ridgeline this weekend.

Shouldn't be too much trouble for them. And then the big one is an out of GSL game. How much fun is this? Gonzaga Prep is on the road this weekend at Inglewood down in Southern California. Oof.

I remember when my son played at Ferris. They went down and played one of the Long beach teams and they all look, they ran out of the tunnel. They had 100 guys come out of the tunnel and they were dressed up in USC colors and they were massive. And Ferris, I think Halladay threw for like 600 yards against them. They bubble screened him to death and they ended up blowing him off the field.

It was funnier than heck. That was a pretty good team. They went on and got beat in the state championship against Skyline. So those out of area, out of, you know, state deals. In fact, last year I think Gonzaga Prep went back to Washington D.

C. and played a really good football team back there. So they're not afraid to travel and they've taken on some impressive schools outside the state and the area. Always fun when you're a team with enough name and brand recognition to do that. They're not in the gsl, but do you know who that is really aided the last couple of years?

Coeur d'. Alene. Oh, yeah. And you know, I'd love to see Coeur d' Alene be part of this league, even if it's non conference. You know, have Coeur d' Alene post falls.

That'd be fun. You know, I mean, seriously, how cool would that be? Lake City, those three. You know, there's a great, that's great tradition between what they do and what goes on over here. High school football could bring back what college football has lost.

Yay. Natural rivalries. Natural rivalries. What they're not based on the almighty dollar. They can pound sand that all that stuff that's been going on on the college level.

Well, welcome back to University. I'm sorry, Union Stadium where University High School is going to take on the Meade Panthers. A Thursday night battle here and if you wonder why Greg is stepping in well, he's pinch hitting for Larry Weir who's on a moped heading south to Fresno because he had some issues, wasn't able to fly. So he's got a two day drive to drive down to the Valley to watch and get ready to broadcast the Eastern Washington Fresno State game on Saturday. So that'll be kind of interesting.

University High and Mead getting ready to go at the top of the hour as we get ready to bring you our keys to the game you here in the pregame show between the Titans and the Panthers. All right, Paul Sorensen.

In terms of what University high school can do tonight, they have Caleb Walcott, a third year starting quarterback, a guy who can really run and they have a couple guys who really pop. When you look at them on the field, Shane Skidmore and in the quarterback's younger brother, Peyton Walcott. They might be smaller than me, but they've got playmakers. Shane Skidmore is only 6 7, 225 pounds. He's going to be a great tight end.

Excellent hands, not real fast, but he stands above the crowd, literally. So he's a guy that I would target. He'd be a perfect person in the red zone. So, you know, it's really cool to see them. But you're right, this is, I'm worried about the matchup in the trenches with University.

They are not real big, you know, from that standpoint. So they're going to have to use quickness and technique and I think they're going to have a challenge up against this Mead Panther team. They're not real old, it's kind of a young team. Only six starters on offense for. I'm sorry, four starters on offense for.

I've got. Yeah for me. And then six on defense where University has six starters on OH and five on D. So both of these teams are pretty young in terms of seniors. Pretty young compared.

The good news for you, High is They have all those big playmakers on offense, on defense. They also have some real standouts, especially Paul. You might not be surprised to find on the defensive line Waylon Romero, big guy, 6 foot 3, 230, he's a pass rusher. Committed 2 Eastern Washington and that's Dario Romero's son and basically Dario was an outstanding player. I coached him up at Lewis and Clark back in the day.

Went to Washington State originally, then ended up that just didn't work out and ended up at Eastern and went on and had a really nice professional career and it was really cool. He's a great guy and his son worked his butt off. Absolutely put in the work in the weight room and did a great job at camp and earned a scholarship and he's going to be outstanding. Is also offered by Idaho. He had a preferred walk on to Washington State.

Had a couple other schools that were sniffing around as well. He's going to be a good football player and somebody I would definitely I'm going to be keeping my eye on tonight because of what he can do. The other one to do for you. Hi Shane Swan, another big D lineman, 63255 A junior. They're going to have to double team him.

He's so good. He's a nose guard. If you can get a guy that can control the A gap like he can where you have to take a center and guard, that's going to free up your linebackers are going to blitz a little bit, you know, and also free up some of the defensive tackles and DNS.

So if you can have one guy match up with two, that's going to be a great bonus for your defense because you're going to have some open areas that you can shoot the gap. 3 FM. Before the break here on the pregame show, we were talking about the University High School Titans and what they have up their sleeve tonight. Paul, let's take a Second here to talk about the Mead Panthers. They had one of their two quarterbacks go down in week one, Riker Herd. So they are leading tonight on JJ Lehman, who's known as a little bit more of a running quarterback, but you just pointed out during the commercial break he has a hose.

He does. I was surprised. He made a throw in the right corner, a little pulse corner out. He put it right on the button. I'm going, that dude is a better runner than he's a thrower.

That's a heck of a quarterback. So that was impressive as well. As for what the rest of the Mead Panthers have available, they have three running backs. They go to Keegan Mallon, Jimmy Fromm and Dylan Husk, all of whom have been in my English class over the last two years. But the guy that everyone knows that is back from last year's team who was number one with a bullet on this squad, Paul, is Max Workman.

He's been around a while. I love that guy and I think he is good enough to play at the next level. There's some school that will get a heck of an athlete I'd love. The Workman family are really good people and you know, he has paid his dues. He has played a lot of football in the Greater Spokane League over the years and he's an athlete that you have to game plan because he can bring it great baseball player along with a football player.

He's just an outstanding athlete and could really run. All right, let's go ahead and take a look at our starting lineups for tonight's game here on the pregame show between University High School and Meade. Here is the starting lineup for the Panthers. The offensive line, Austin Frederick, Vance Gustafson. Sean Jones, Marcus Fetcho and Connor Gallagher.

They have two running backs, both of whom are in my English class. Second period, Keegan Allen, sixth period, Jimmy from their quarterback is J. J. lehman. Two wide receivers, Jakai Howell and Max Workman in the tight end.

A guy who people are expecting to have a breakout year, Paul, Braden Harvey. Yeah, Braden Harvey is one of the up and comers, you know, in this league and I think he can be a really, really good football player. He can do some things and, you know, get open and really. And is also an excellent blocker as well. So this should be.

And he's only a junior, so we have two more years to kind of watch him. He's going to be on the recruiting radar as well. He's also in my sixth period English class. Is there anybody you don't Know on this team. That's what I'm telling you.

All right, here's the defensive line for me. Connor Gallagher, Jameson Emery, Wyatt Thorleifson and Jacob Hendricks. The linebackers, Ethan Harvey, Braden Harvey and Cameron Mattingly. Their DBs, Max Workman, Madden Rabb, who's also a tight end. On the offensive side, Chase Pluitt and Braden Powers.

So a good amount of two way guys, but once again, Paul, not that many seniors for Mead, right? University's got five two way players, which really wears on you. I had to do that in high school and I remember the first game I went out and tried to run as hard as I could. I barely made it to halftime. So you kind of have to pace yourself.

You got to be smart in how you go out. You've got to kind of be careful because you don't want to run yourself into the ground. You get to halftime, you need an app. So the same thing. Mead doesn't have quite as many two way players.

They've got a little bit more depth, they're a little bit bigger. I think this is going to be a grinder game and University is going to have to going to have to withstand some serious blows. Coming over from the Mead Panthers. Now let's take a look at the starting lineup for the University Titans out of the valley. Here's their offensive line.

Braden Schwab, Brandon Moore, Ethan Mejia, Shane Swan, who is also a star on the defensive end and so is the man right up front, Waylon Romero. Paul, those are the two big guys that we're going to watch tonight. Wayne, Waylon Romero. I've been excited to see him because of what he's done in the summer and just his growth as a football player and his dad, an outstanding person and athlete, has been a great resource for him to help him to get to the next level.

And I'll tell you, Eastern Washington is getting a heck of a football player. Here's their slot receiver. Antonio Allen will also take some handoffs as a running back. Out of the backfield. Three big names that you're going to look for.

Shane Skidmore, the 6 foot 7 tight end, Peyton Walcott, Logan Troutman, Caleb Walcott at quarterback and Nolan Orendorf at fullback. That is their starting offense on the defensive end. Look out for those two big boys once again, Waylon Romero and Shane Swan. Also joined on the line by Ryan Sulpizio. They only run a 33 Paul with a bunch of defensive backs.

So here's the rest of their DBs. They have Peyton Walcott, Caleb Walcott, Bobby Jones, Dominic Victor and then three linebackers, Allen Orendorf again and Paxton Cunanan. Six of the 11 starters are two way players. I missed. I don't know how he did.

He's only 6, 7. I miss Shane Skidmore on that. So again, very tough where you see, you know, there's three players for, for me that goes both ways. There's six for University especially early in the season you really start kind of coming into shape. Your second, third game, first game, forget about it, you're gassed.

But it's good. You're starting to get up to game speed. So this is going to be a game. We'll see how they hold up and see if they can, you know, stay, stay in tune with six players going both ways. Paul Sorensen, I'd like to get your pregame observations now that as for the moment, Mead and U High have both left the field to go get their last talks from their coaches before they run back out for the beginning of this game.

Just looking at both teams physically, what are your early takeaways? The good size that, that Meade has up front, they're impressive. But there's a couple of guys in University that I really like. They've got some size, just not the depth. The depth for me is really on the Mead Panther size.

And also Keith Stamp, he was an outstanding coach up at Deer Park. Came down, taken over the program, kind of putting his stamp on it. I hate to say that, but you're starting to see them play physical. Good point of the attack on both the offensive line and the defense. University again is just a little young.

A lot of guys playing both ways, a little bit undersized. But you can't, you can't discount the heart of a good football team. And, and I think University has that, that, that capability. I think they've got great heart and they're going to play hard tonight. Well, here's the thing about the University Titans.

I don't remember, I don't remember if you remember it. Two years ago you and I did a U High game together out at U High in the Valley and we saw the core they were building when they were all sophomores, Skidmore and Caleb Walcott and the guys around them. We said they're not ready yet, but look out in two years. And here we are two years later. So this is really, you know, this is where the, you know, this is where the rubber meets the road.

We're going to see that development. What have they done? And all the stuff in the offseason, going to the camps, going and lifting, you know, the running programs. It's a lot more detailed now than ever, you know, whatever it was, especially when I played. I mean, you go from football to basketball to baseball and then you went to summer.

You play summer baseball. You have two weeks off and then you roll in. Now they're doing multiple sports, you know, all summer long where they have to go to football practice and they're playing a basketball scrimmage and they got a baseball game at night. It's insane. The level of, of intensity these kids are going through and that's tough on the body.

Where's the body out of Skosh. Tonight's game is going to be intense. It's going to be fun. And it is coming up in just a few minutes as we take another break here on the pregame show. Top of the hour, we have University High School out of the Valley and Mead as part of our RB's GSL game of the week on 700 ESPN and 105.

The officials are down there. It's interesting, Greg, you talked about this. They're having to play Thursday night games. Not because they've scheduled a lot of Thursday night games because of the convenience. They had to do it because of the officials.

They had to do it because of the official shortage in the Greater Spokane League. Paul, you are a longtime referee. You just retired. 3 FM. Paul Sorensen said, we've broken down this game every which way. U High has some real stud playmakers on the defensive line and at the skill positions, but boy, me just looks a little bit bigger overall. What, what kind of thing do you think we're going to see tonight? I think you're going to have to see University get the ball out quickly, probably attack the edges with a big when you have a big defensive line, you run them, you spread them out, you make them chase.

That wears them out. So I think you're going to have to kind of attack the perimeter, see if you can have enough time to go vertical, put your playmakers out there on island and give them a chance to shine, you know. And so I think that's going to really be a key, you know, for them where me just has to come in and play their game, be physical at the point of attack. They've got a quarterback that can throw it and is a very good runner and you see what running quarterbacks can do. You know, nowadays in this football game they really present problems, you know, on the edge and up the middle you think you got them sacked.

All of a sudden he gives up a 20 yard game. That really breaks your back as a defense. Both of these teams definitely no fun to have to play a Thursday night game this early in your high school football season. But I guess better now than in October or November. But either way that is, it will put a bow on the pregame show and it's time to get going for some high school football as the Mead Panthers are ready to take the field after this commercial break.

You've got five of those guys out there, we appreciate them and it's great to have our listeners out there as well tuning in. And Paul, we have a really fun one coming up here in just a couple of minutes between the Mead Panthers and the University High School titans. They've got 12 minutes on the clock. Sounds like the cheerleader is making some kind of address to the student body. And then we are getting ready to go as Mead runs out on the field to the left side of the field here on their home turf at Union Stadium, which opened up, I believe in 2021. So this is the beginning of its third year, but it's been a great three years.

Well, unfortunately they kicked off right when Covid hit, so that was kind of a bummer. But, but overall from that standpoint it's, it's held up pretty well. A lot of soccer games out here, a lot of activities going on, a lot of youth sports games. This has been a really good multi purpose youth stadium and they've had to step up because Albie has been down for A couple years now, you know when they tore it down building up the new downtown stadium.

And that's going to kick off hopefully early October and then the Spokane public schools will actually have a home again instead of having to come out play everybody else's place. All right, so Mead on the left side of the field in their navies. Logan Ola, right footed kicker, boots it into the air and it is the Papa Murphy's kickoff. Change the way you pizza. It's down to the 10 yard line, Dominic Victor will return it.

No, it rolled by him. It rolled down to the goal line. They try to run it out and they make it to the two or three. It's gonna be a 97 yard field for U High on the opening drive. Paul.

Yeah, Dominic Victor on that one just kind of muffed the kick but when he touched it, he touched it about the fifth he had to go back because that's a live ball. So he had to run back and pick that thing up. When he looked up he just saw a wall of Mead Panthers there and they got there in a hurry and they're a little grumpy and they pick Vicar Upton bounced him on about the four, three or four yard line. Terrible field position for the Titans to start their first drive. Our University high school takes over on their first drive of the game on offense on the right side of the field on their own three yard line.

Caleb Walcott, the left handed senior quarterback in his third year, goes out of the shotgun, looks at the ME defense, he's gonna roll right, he's behind some blockers, behind his running backs, gets across to the five, to the six or seven, gain of maybe five yards. You know that's a good play because what happened, you send the linebackers, the tight end, the wide receivers are all blocking you and then you use the quarterback kind of, that's somebody that you normally don't account for in the run game. So they kind of overwhelmed me down the right side that time just with bodies. Good call to get off the goal line there and give you some breathing room. On second down, their quarterback Caleb Walcott had a pretty good week.

In week one, they lost him out Spokane, but he was 8 for 13, about 100 yards, two touchdowns, no picks. Yeah, that's, that's the key. Don't turn the football over tonight. Put together some sustained drives and see if you can put the ball in the end zone. Walcut out of the gun, hands it off immediately to Logan Troutman who tries to get along the right side of the line.

But he is swallowed up immediately. A great tackle by Garrett Miller. I would say no gain, maybe a loss of one. Yeah, there was really no place for him to go there and you could see where. That's where the size really hurts him up front.

That's why I think you got to spread this field and get wide, make this defensive line and linebackers, see if you can get some kickoff blocks. Get to the perimeter, attack the perimeter. You're gonna have a tough time between the tackles in this game tonight. Third gay, third down and a long three here for University High School on their first drive of the game. They're at their own 10 yard line, bunch formation, but Walcott is coming out of the gun flanked by Logan Troutman who ran the last play.

Here it comes, a high snap. They'll run quarterback power. He runs up the middle, gets across the 10 to the 12 or 13. He's going to be right up against the sticks. Did he get the Damon orthodontics first down?

He did by just the skin of his teeth. Great call that time. And I think you're going to have to see him. You're going to have to see Walcott do that a lot tonight. The senior is going to be the load in terms of running the football.

But I think that's a great play because you've got lead blockers with your backs. Your offensive line doesn't have to physical. The big Panther defensive line, they just have to get in the way and just kind of screen them and then allow your athletes to make plays. Alright, that was a Damon orthodontics. First down, new first and 10 from the their own 14 yard line.

Here's a snap and whistles immediately. That was UHI at the offense. Jumped. Yeah. And then we'll start reading off the bevy of sponsors that we have here.

So a new 1st in 15 for u high back of their own 10 on the right side of the field. Here's the snap. It's a draw delay. Give up the middle to Nolan Orendorf. He got a gain of two or three up the gut.

Yeah, that was just a good job. But as soon as he got through the line of scrimmage. Those backers for me did a nice job of collapsing the play, getting there in a hurry and setting down a long third and or second and about 12 now. So that's another thing that U High can't afford. They can't afford to fall behind the sticks here.

They can't, you know, hurt themselves with penalties and turnovers. They've got to just try to be begrudgingly boring and get 3, 4, 5 yards of carry if they can. Referees call it a gain. A three second down and 12 for the Titans. Only two deep safeties back from me, but everyone's in a bunch formation.

Here it comes. High snap play action, wall cut the lefty QB roll to his left. He's looking downfield, nobody's there. He's in a tuck and run across the 15, across the 20. Taken down at the 22 by Braden Harvey.

His first tackle. That's going to be third down and manageable. Maybe third down and three. That was smart. They had all the play action going to the right side.

The quarterback rolled left, he only had one guy to beat. Made a nice move over there, cut back against the grain. Kind of ran into some, some traffic there but that's, that's what he can do running the football. That's why he's going to be a busy bee. He's going to have to tote this thing probably about 25, 30 times tonight to keep this offense rolling.

Well, here's the thing about University High School. Caleb Walcott, great quarterback. They better hustle. They're going to run out of delay a game here. Walcott and Skidmore, good receivers, but if they're not open, Walcott's got a run and Mead is ready for that third down and three from the 21 yard line.

Here's the high snap to Walcott. He's going to keep himself up the middle. Quarterback power. He dives past the 25, meets 20 trying to push him, but once again it looks like he got the Damon Orthodontics first down by the skin of his teeth. It's been a great drive.

It's burning clock here. You got 8:20 to go here in the first quarter. Remember this thing started on the three yard line after the muff kickoff, so nice job. You know, by University to continue this drive and to continue to keep that clock going, they need to shorten this game. You can do that with long possessions on the offensive side.

Long drives eat clock, get points. That's a great recipe for the Titans. Well here at Union Stadium in Mead, we have a pretty full student section for me because this is a home game regardless of the fact that it's a Thursday night. Across the way in the center in the university high school stands parents. But that is to be expected on a Thursday night early in the season.

Here comes the snap. Walcott fakes handoff. He takes it himself, runs left, tries to get around the line, but Meade is there and ready for him in first. On the tackle for Meade, Robert Emery. Yeah, Emory did a nice job of getting up field and really kind of creating some havoc there.

He's also a captain on the defensive side. And I really like this defensive front. They're doing a nice job there. Gallagher's a stud. Hendricks also plays well.

The linebacker is really good. You've got the two Harveys and Mattingly. That name might sound familiar to me. Panther fans. A couple of brothers came through that were really, really good athletes and went on to play at Oregon and Washington State, respectively.

All right, so no gain on that last play as Walcott tried quarterback run. That's going to be second and 10 for you high again from their own 25. They started at the three. Here's the snap in the handoff, right side. It's Isaiah Ramirez, his first handoff of the game.

He tried to get around the outside, but he couldn't Me dbs wrap him up. It was Chase blew it, who came in from the safety spot. No gain. Third. Oh, maybe a gain of one.

Third and nine. And that's the thing that you're seeing now in defense is you have to have athletes that can tackle in space. You know, at the college level, it's really one on one out there. You've got to be able to be a great open field tackler. That was a great job by fluid by blue.

Had to come in and. And one on one. Go low. Great tackle. Put his hands on, wrapped him up, threw him down.

Short gain. Excellent job. Third down and nine and a big open set now for U high. Three receivers split to the left, one to the right for the senior quarterback, Caleb Walcott. He drops back, throws low to the near side.

It's caught at the line of scrimmage and man, probably no gain on the play. Isaiah Ramirez made the catch, but the Mead DBs were ready. No gain on the play. Fourth and nine. You high after going 20 yards, Will Punt.

Yeah, they're gonna have to punt the ball. That. That ball took forever to get out there. And then what happened? It was actually Peyton Walcott, 82 that.

But he tried to cut back inside. He had room to the outside. If he stayed outside, he picked up five, six yards. Maybe break a tackle, you get a first down. He cut back against the grain.

That's where all the blue jersey people are. And they made the tackle back to punt for University High School, the quarterback, Caleb Walcott. It's a good one. He's going to roll out to the right. He will punt and put this one in the air.

It's not going very far past the 50 yard line. Takes a U high bounce down to the Mead 40 and it will roll out of bounds. Still no score here, 534 to go in the first quarter between U High and Mead. There is no score. Here's the first play of the game on offense for the Mead Panthers. Handoff from JG Lehman to Keegan Mallon. He runs along the right side of the line. Tackled for a loss of one, maybe a loss of three.

Actually a generous spot on the U High side for the referees. The clock will tick down inside five minutes. No score here in the first quarter. Bobby Jones came up from his corner position. Number 11 did a nice job of going high and knocking him down there.

That was a great play by him at the corner spot. He had outside leverage, forced the running back to bounce it. He had no place to go. Here's the second down and 13 play for the Meade Panthers. Their second play of the game.

Good snap to Lehman. Turns and hands off to James From. He's between the tackles past the 50 yard line. A gain of 13 for 15 yards and a first down for the junior from my sixth period class. He's getting an A.

Tomorrow's you know, snap quiz that that he's going to put put out there. But let's give the offensive line credit on that. The left side opened up a huge hole. He hit. He blew right through the D line.

The linebackers was in the secondary. Licky split, that was well blocked up front. He got all the way down to the 46 yard line of University High School on Mead's second play of the game. That's not bad. Here's Lehman out of the shotgun.

Two receivers to his right, one to his left. He takes a quick snap, looks downfield. It's a screenplay. Pressure coming, throws to the near side. It's out of bounds, second and ten.

Yeah. Nice job that time. Guess who? Waylon Romero was in there. Shane Swan was also in there.

They had good pressure right up the middle and Romero did a great job of bull rushing. Just went right up there, took that guard and shoved him right into the backfield, well, guess what? That's where the quarterback was. So makes it tough when your offensive lineman comes back at you and you got a D lineman with some attitude wanting to throw you down the ground. So he just threw the ball away.

So J. J. lehman out of the shotgun. He was one of two quarterbacks Mead had last week in Week 1. The other one, Rider Riker Herd went down with an injury.

He's hurt. So now this team belongs to JJ Lehman. University High School showing blitz and their linebacker jumped before the play started. Here come the flags. Yeah, that was Antonio Allen that time.

Got a little excited. He was probably having a jet blitz on the outside. Wanted to get a good start. But you can't do that before they snap the ball. Five yard penalty.

That's a free, that's a freebie. Those are the things that drive coaches nuts. When you're giving them five yards. You're just coming off a great play with pressure on the quarterback. He's got to throw it away.

He turned around and give him five on the penalty. Second down and five now for me. All the way down to the U high 40 yard line on their first drive. No score. 430 to go in the quarter.

Linebackers show blitz again. They put a man in motion. Here's the snap. Lehman rolls right under heavy pressure. Throws near sideline.

Nearly intercepted by Bobby Jones. It's incomplete, but it'll still be third down and five. Great pressure that time by Orendorf, the inside linebacker. They did a double A gap blitz. Which means they shot one linebacker on one side of the center, the other linebacker on the other side of the center.

He's got to pick his poison. Who do you block? So he took the one to the left and Orndorff was one to the right. He made the play. Third down and five.

UHI's defense allowed a big run a minute ago to Jimmy Fromm. The rest for Meade, not so successful. Here's the right handed quarterback, Lehman out of the gun. They put two men in motion, right to left. Now there's two receivers on each side of the line.

Third down and five. Lehman looks to the near side. They have a little time on the clock. 5, 4, 3, 2. Here's the snap.

Turns it gives to Keegan now and he's across the left side of the line. He cuts up past Midfield, past the 35, down to the 32. A gain of 10 and a Damon Orthodontics. First down. Very nice run that time.

And again, well blocked. I really like the way Keegan runs, he's also a captain. But this offensive line is starting to impose their will. Greg. They're creating holes and openings that, that look really good.

No doubt about it. So JJ Lehman, he's getting some help from his great running backs. That was the first first down run of the night for Keegan Mallon who's the downhill physical back. Jimmy Fromm also had a big run. He's the shake and bake.

They have some thunder and lightning in the Mead backfield this year. New first down and 10. They're down to the U high 34 on the right side of the field. Here's the snap. Pocket collapses.

He is a mauled in the backfield but he threw it to the sideline and I don't see any grounding. It'll be second and 10. He got out of the pocket. Well, the NFL and the college rules if the ball doesn't go past the line of scrimmage, that's grounding. I'm not sure if the high school rules.

The same official on this sideline is coming over now to talk to the referee to see if that was the case. So I think you're going to have a flag. He did not get the ball past the line. Scrimmage. And here it comes.

There it is. Flags at midfield now. So it does help to know like an occasional rule. Sure. So there you go.

I feel good about it. Now I can go home and take a nap. That's why they pay you the big dollars. Paul. No, but thank you.

355 to go here in the first quarter. Mead 0, University High School 0. But a huge penalty. They were down to the 34 yard line of U High. They're moving this ball back to what looks like around midfield.

They're going the wrong direction. Across midfield. Mead is back at their own 48 spot. That's the point of the foul. That's the spot foul on the, on the grounding.

That's where that ball went out of bounds, you know, so that, that's a big penalty. And that was just great pressure getting to the quarterback and then him not being able to get out of the pocket and throw it away. This is about second down and 30 yards to go for Mead. After the penalty, Lehman might have to throw. Here's the snap, turns and hands it off to Keegan.

Mallon tries to get to the left side of the line but Yu High was ready for him. Wow. Down he goes. No gain. Third down and forever.

They'll just have to run. Yeah, I like it. Dominic Victor came up, he's playing out there. I like the corners. Jones and Victor have both had tackle for losses from their corner spots.

So what they're doing is they're flashing safeties, are playing over the top, they're rolling their coverage, which means their corners are coming up for run support and they're making plays behind the line of scrimmage. I like this well coached football team right now. Defensively they're creating some problems for me. Third down for the Panthers all the way back at their own 45 yard line. Now if they want a first out, they got to get to the U high 23.

Time for a quick kick. Most likely not gonna happen. Let's see what they do on third down and 31. Here's the snap to Lehman. Turns and gives to Mallon.

No, actually he's gonna keep it himself. But he's still on his feet past the 50, the 45, the 40. He's on his feet down to the 30 yard line. Okay, Paul, so here's the thing we don't know about Mead's kicker. They got down to the 29, they've got to get to the 24.

Is this go for it territory? Go for it. I mean, if you're not sure that's a 40, it'll be a 45 yard field goal. Now you're going for this thing. And that was just a great play by the quarterback.

He did an outstanding job, you know, of getting up there. I love what Lehman did. He is a good runner. He broke attack with lion scrimmage, then just shot the gap and just kind of outran everybody. Pursued from the back, finally got him to get down to the ground.

But that was a great play, breaking the tackles. Lion scrimmage. The Panthers are going to go for it on the U high 30 yard line. It's 4 and 7. Lehman out of the gun, turns and throws really fast.

He was supposed to turn up because when he turned outside there was nobody out there. So he's kind of going, where's my guy back there, man. A generous late spot by the referees. This is going to be way more than manageable for you High. They're going to call this third down in a short four from their own 36 on the left hash mark Mead only has one deep man back in coverage.

We thought these would be two pretty evenly matched teams and that's what we have so far and I've been impressed. I thought you had to get pushed around a little bit up front. Nope. They're doing a nice job of kind of holding serve. They're doing a good job in the secondary where they're rolling their corners up.

They have safety help over the top. If Mead can do a little play action, I think they can take some shots downfield. They're going to have some open receivers because U HA is bringing a lot of pressure. They are blitzing like crazy. That means you've got a max protect and hope that you can buy time for your qb.

And if he can get open, I think they're going to have a great chance to maybe get a big play. The other reason me might be a little sluggish starting is they've got great running backs and they have great receivers. But in case you're just tuning in or haven't heard, they had two quarterbacks playing one drive each in their opener last week against Eastmont. Riker Herd and J. J.

lehman Heard went down. They're better of the two throwing quarterbacks went down. J. J. lehman's more of a runner but he has a hose.

And that is intercepted by me. Knocked away. It was Max Workman. It looked like he had a pick and said he knocked it away, but boy, Max Workman, his first big play of the night. Yeah, that was a PBU pass broken up and he did a great job of reading that.

He actually beat the wide receiver to the point and got two hands on it, just swatted it down, so. Looked like he was trying to swat a mosquito there and he smushed that mosquito. That was a nice play by Max. All right, so they will. Where's the punter?

Well, that's the quarterback. Is, is Caleb Walker getting the word from his head coach about what they want to do here on fourth down at eight, but they're going to take a timeout with 1109 here to go. I think they had some kind of wrong formation or something out there, Paul. They didn't have a punter. Well, it's the quarterback.

He's got to stay out there. I know. So he ran out. Didn't he run off the field? I think he did.

Maybe he got confused on. That's actually a pretty good throw. He rolled his left side, you know, and had pressure. There was a lot of pressure coming up the middle, but Workman just made a great play of coming. He undercut the route, then got two hands on there and just volleyball spiked that thing into the turf.

So I think they're going to do a deal where they've got to get a punter back there so they can punt. Still no score, still a defensive struggle which everybody in the stands going, hey, we want offense for us defensive folks. We love defense and this has been a defensive game. A lot of blitzing, a lot of stuff going on between the tackles and both of these coaching staffs trying to figure out what can work for them to put together a sustained driver, maybe a, you know, a big play for a score.

So they've got their work cut out for them. University has been really bringing pressure and I think you're going to see some screens and some plays to the outside maybe to change up this U High Titan pressure passing attack. So Mead will drive right to left across your radio dial. 1102 to go here in the second quarter. Still no score between Meade and U High.

JJ Lehman is the quarterback. He has both Keegan Mallon and Jimmy Fromm. Split to his left turns and hands off to Fromm. He's going to take it along the near sideline. 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.

Push out of bounds but a flag all the way back at the 25. Paul, you got a hold. The umpire saw that one and threw a little hole. They're going to bring that back. That's too bad.

That's going to be a 10 yard penalty on a great play. A beautiful bounce play to the left side. Excellent blocking there. The tight end kind of caved everybody down and sealed that side. Running back had a good read, but unfortunately a little bit of a hole.

They're going to move that thing back 10 yards. That's a bummer for me. I got to tell you, Jimmy Fromm looks really good that I Know that run didn't necessarily count, but that's already two breakaway plays out of the backfield in the first half. Yeah, but it's on film and people will see that, you know, so that's the key, you know, from that perspective, you know, that that can work from. As a guy that can take it, you know, to the house at any time.

He showed some really good speed there. Good, good support on the backside by University to chase him down and knock him down. But a great job on the left side of blocking on that play. All right, so first down and 20 now for me after they accepted the penalty. 10:54 to go here in the first half, no score.

First and 20 for me to back at their own 10 yard line. Out of the gun, it's JJ Lehman. Three receivers split to the right, turns and hands off to Mallon. He has met for a gain of maybe one yard. Man is, uh, good on the defensive back position.

They keep spending sending guys through the line. That was Paxton Cunanan, a great tackle. Probably no game. Yeah, that was just a nice job, you know, coming up there to seal and they're doing that rugby tackle. Eyes to the thigh, put your head across and then twist.

Getting the guy down there takes your head out of that tackle, which is good and it's also a sure tackle. That was a well done job in the open field. Gain of one on the play and that's generous. Second down and 19 for Mead. Bunch formation.

One receiver split to the right. Here's a handoff up the middle once again. It's Mallon again. It doesn't go very far. Maybe to the 14, two or three yards.

It's going to be third and forever. Well, let's give you high credit. They're stout right now. They have seven guys up at the line of scrimmage. So they are really putting pressure on me to try to pick up and block.

Let's see, seven plays. 16 yards for me or 321. Nice. That was Uhai's last drive. Noah's doing a great job.

He's outstanding. We need to hire him because our stats suck. We're not very good at it, are we? We keep stats. No, we don't.

That's the problem. We have no. We have no. Thank goodness he's here. He's saving us.

Third down and 16 yards to go here for Mead. Stuck at their own 14. UHI has been good. They're going to run the ball around the outside. It's a handoff to Max Workman.

He's past the 20, pushed out of bounds around the 25. Good creativity on the sweep, but it's still going to be seven yards short. It'll be fourth and long and you got to imagine they'll punt. An excellent block that time on the outside by number 74. Look like Marcus Fetchko.

He's a junior, he's a big dude and he, he got up there and pulled and it looked like the outside backer came up and he sealed him and shoved him to the ground. He was lucky. Didn't get a taunting penalty on that one, but fortunately the officials didn't see it. Remember, it's not illegal. They don't call it so coaches will remind him in film just to, hey, good job, he knocked him down, but don't stand over the top of him and clap.

That's going to get you penalty. Lehman will punt it away for me. He's standing back at the 10. And back to receive is Peyton Walcott. For you High, the kick is in the air, right to left, across your radio dial.

Takes a decent bounce around the 50 yard line. That ball is technically a fumble. Who's got it? Mead's got it. Oh, man, U High blew the fumble.

Mead has the ball. They're back on the 44 yard line. Another chance at life for the Mead Panthers. I don't think you can advance a fumble, so I think where they spot it, I think they're going to have to bring that ball back. But that's going to be a Mead Panther ball from where he recovered that.

The ball bounced and hit the U High deep. Man, who wasn't looking for the ball, he was looking to block it hit him in the back of the leg. No, actually he went to field it. He ran, took a couple of steps and reached over to pick the ball up and when he went to reach over to pick it up, he kicked it out of his hands. So they're going to move that spot back to where the ball was recovered.

You can't advance a fumble. It's weird that, you know that's a great play, but that's going to be moved all the way back, I think to the inside the 35, maybe to the 36 yard line. All right, so either way, me gets a second chance at life here with 9, 10 to go. Turnover. That's a big first half.

Yep. And special teams, we talked about that, Greg, how important that is. And you get a good hold by your defense, you get off the field, you get a chance to get good field position and then you get a Fumble that. That really hurt you. All right, a new 1st and 10 for me to as they get another chance at this drive.

This time from their own 38 yard line on the right side of the 50. Lehman back out to quarterback. Two receivers split to the near side. He drops back plenty of time. Throws down the far sideline.

He's looking for Workman. He overshot him by just a step. That was a nice throw. He gave Workman a chance because he threw that feather, that ball towards the sideline. Workman ran a great route, a little post corner route.

He was covered by a safety but the safety had inside coverage on him and that ball was thrown to the outside. So he had a great chance to basically catch that ball. But as you said, it was just a step, just out of his grasp. That would have been a big play for the Panthers. They took a shot, try to throw it downfield.

Balls on the 38. 905 to go here in the second quarter. 00 score after the incomplete pass. 2nd and 10 Mead on their own 38 yard line. Two deep safeties back for U High.

But Mead has been so good at running the ball so far, you have to imagine that's what they'll do here on second and 10. Here's the snap to Lehman. No, he's going to roll left. He's going to throw down the sideline. Once again looking for a man on the same post route he was looking for.

Jimmy from once again overthrew him to the sideline. Third and 10. Yeah, but that's because he had heck of really good pressure from the inside backer. Antonio Allen, who was a senior, he came up on an inside blitz, kind of blistered the quarterback. When he was rolling to his left, he hit him and that caused the pass to be errant because he couldn't set his feet.

And I think, I think the hit kind of knocked that ball to the left side as well. So again, good pressure by University. Again they're blitzing. So the only way that you stop a blitz is the big playoff. Third down and 10 for me.

Back at their own 38 yard line. One deep safety back for you High in their white uniforms. Here's third and ten. It's a screenplay. Tries to get it to Keegan Mallon.

It's off his hands. Incomplete. 4th and 10. U high will take over if they can recover the punt this time. Well, I'm willing to bet that the young man that fumbled that last one has learned from his mistakes and he's going to be just fine.

Get him out there. In fact, they're taking him off the field, putting in two safeties in the back. So he'll be able to watch that from the sidelines and say, okay, here's what you do on punt returns. You don't get to touch the football. Stay away from it, okay?

That's what they told me when I played Peyton Walcott back to receive as Isaiah Ramirez there mean comment by the coach to say don't touch the ball when it's in the air, Is that what they said? Yeah, said I went home and pouted. All right, here's the Mead kick from the 25 yard line. Good one in the air, two guys back to receiver for you High at their own 30. Takes a mead bounce down inside the 25 yard line, the 26.

And that's where U High will take over 76 yards to go on the next drive. Uh's gonna send their guys right back out there. Remember, University has six players going both ways, so it doesn't really impact you in the first half. I mean you kind of get tired, you know, with a couple minutes left at halftime, but then you kind of get your second win back in the second half. It's midway through the third quarter that last play, three plays, zero yards, took 12 seconds after the the fumble.

So really me did a poor job. Thank you. Noah did a poor job of capitalizing on that turnover and give University's defense credit for going back out there, not giving them a yard. Refs, we're going to mark this at the 25, so a new 1st and 10 for you high from their own 26 yard line. Turning a handoff here to Logan Troutman.

Maybe back to the line of scrimmage, maybe a gain of one, but not very much. It was like running into the great Wall. There was nothing there, there was no holes, they had no place to go. It couldn't get any movement up front. That poor back just slammed right into the right guard.

Said, oh well, that's, that's not fun. Good play by the me defense. Well done. No gain, no loss. Second down and 10.

I gotta tell you, not only have the defensive lines been impressive, we have loved the DBs. They're making big plays on both sides. Well, and the thing is they're well coached both sides. I've been impressed by the, by the tackling and by the defensive coverage by both of these teams. Second down and 10.

Walcott takes the high snap, rolls out to his right QB run spun down on the right side of the hash marks. He Got to about the 30, gain a three. This will be third down at about seven. Yeah, nice job that time by By Powers coming up from. He's a junior.

He came up from his safety spot, you know, it just kind of stuck his nose right in there and forced everything back inside. An excellent play by him. Even though, you know, he didn't get credit for the tackle. But he did what he's supposed to. He contained the play, dropped his shoulder, took the bat, the blocker on knocked him back and that was enough to blow the play up.

Third down and eight coming up for you. High. They run a run heavy multiple set offense. They've been good on the ground, but Caleb Walcott, the quarterback, has been asked to do a lot of stuff himself. 3rd down and 8, 7:30 to go in the first half.

00 our score. They come out and we have a timeout on the field. UHI will take it. They will. They'll give them a chance to sit down and talk about it.

What would you do, Greg? You get to be the offensive coordinator. What are you calling on this? Well, I'd love to find Shane Skidmore over the middle. The 6 foot 6 tight end you have, but Mead's done a decent job keeping him covered.

Well, what I would do is I'd run. I'd run a little play action here. I'd fake the fullback dive, I'd have Skidmore kind of chip block in the outside, then release him in the flat. He'll be wide open. Here they go.

Third down and eight for you High. It's a turn handoff to Isaiah Ramirez. He missed the hole like you Said Paul Gain of maybe even a loss on the play. Third down and nine. Fourth down and nine.

U High will punt. Still no score, seven minutes to go in the first half. Greg. That was a design play to go left, but the hole opened up on the right side. The adage as a running back we were taught slow to the hole, fast through it.

What that means is make sure you have good vision, see where that hole's going to develop, then when you see it go. What he did is he thought it was going to go left, didn't see it, didn't make the cut. Would have been a big play had he done it. Alright, so fourth down and 10, a high snap. It's almost over Walcott's head, but he makes the catch and gets it in the air across the 50, left to right, across your radio dial.

That was Antonio Allen making the tackle. They're not moving Waylon Romero or Swan off the ball. Those guys are really good. I like the way they play and they're tough, they have low center of gravity. These are good big offensive linemen for me.

They're having a tough time. This would be a major statement win for you High if they're able to pull this off. Absolutely. You know, Mead's a building program. I like what Coach Stamps is doing.

I like a lot of the coaches I know on the staff. They're really good. They're very fundamentally sound. But I'll tell you, University has come to play tonight, but still no score. Second and ten.

Wow. We got a trick play. They tried the Hand along the outside, but absolutely nothing doing it. A loss on what was a fake jet sweep and a handoff on a different sweep. Two tackle for losses.

Now for Bobby Jones. He came in, he had a corner blitz to the wide side of the field, shot the gap. He had somebody out blocking on him, but he got up there so quickly, the receiver that was coming over to block couldn't kick him out. And it basically drove him right to where the, you know, the reverse was coming from. And he made that tackle, knocked him way back.

Third down and 18 balls back on the 20 yard line. Yeah, huge loss on the play. Third down and 18 with 5:18 to go here in the first half. Two receivers split to the left, none to the right. Lehman out of the gun, takes the snap, plenty of time.

Throws post, right side. It's caught by Max workman at the 40. It's a daily orthodontics. First down in a gain of 20. Max Workman, the one name that everyone knows from last year's team, making a big play.

That was a great throw. He ran another post corner. This time the ball was right on the button. And because it was, that was a first down. He kept both feet in and then his momentum just took him out of bounds.

There was nobody left there. The defensive back tried to break underneath that route to break it up, but it was thrown high enough and far enough to the outside. Great catch by Workman. They have tried that outpost a couple of times now. Twice to Workman and once to Jimmy Fromm.

I think Lehman likes that play. That's his best throw. That's. I think that's his most comfortable throw. And against his defense, with a two high safety, that's a weak spot of the defense.

First down and 10 for me from the 42. They stack the box, turn and handoff to Jimmy Fromm. Runs right, cuts up the middle between the hashes. He got to the 45. Turned nothing into a gain of three for Meade as they approach midfield.

4:33 to go here in the first half. No score. Great cut that time by from because there he was going to take that thing all the way. Outside corner came up, forced it back inside. He just stopped those feet on a dime and cut back against the grain.

And that's what picked up the yardage. It was well defended, in my opinion, by University. Just a better run by From. Seeing the opening second down and five. They gave him a generous spot here.

One deep guy back in the backfield with Lehman for Mead. Turns and handoff. It's a sweep Again, it's Max Workman. He's past the 40 yard line to the 45. Spun down loss on the play.

He was covered. Incomplete. 4th down and 7. Another play by Victor that time. He broke on the ball that time and hit the receiver the same time the ball got there.

That was a great read by the corner. What they're doing is they're disguising their coverage so that looks like they're going to play deep. And then he's planting that foot and rolling up and playing the flat because the safeties are rolling over the top there. They have what they call a too high shell with their safeties with their corners rolled up. And that's taken away that short passing attack that Mead likes so much.

Lehman back the punt. He's standing at the 30 on the right side of the field. High snap. He's got it. Boots at low line.

They had 12 players on the field, so bit of a no, no thing out there because that would have been a penalty, you know, but it's run down to 38. 7 seconds. So kind of interesting along those lines.

I know there's not a lot of offensive scoring gone, actually zero. But still you've got defensive teams that are stepping up, guys trying to make plays, got opportunities for turnovers and the defensive, you know, kind of holds everything together. This has been a pretty cool no score football game. Well Paul, as you know there are two kinds of high school football games. There are fun three to zero games and then there are excruciating three to zero games.

This is a fun 00 game because both teams, they're showing stuff but the other team seems to make a play at that, that crucial moment, you know, and then what looks like you're going to get a big break on a turnover was a defensive do. 3 plays, 0 yards. 16 seconds after the loss, after the penalty, rather second down and 1512 seconds to go. U High comes out with their offense. Me just called another timeout.

Yeah, I. They wanted to substitute something. They did not have the right defense out there and so that was disappointing on me side. But you can't take the timeouts in at halftime so you might as well get it right. Go out and talk to your guys and see what's going on.

We've got a special guest that has come in and dazzled us in here and he's learnered and also honored. It's Dave Nichols from the Spokane Spokesman Review High School Sports section here at halftime. Mead 0 University 0. Both teams looking for their first win of the year in week two. Dave, the big story coming into this one is that Meade had two quarterbacks last week.

This week they had one because one got injured. What do we think so far, the Mead offense? Well, I don't know if these two teams both have great defenses, but I know from the first half that both of the offenses are struggling. Right? We haven't seen a lot of first downs.

We've seen six punts, a turnover and downs. We've only seen one offense get past the 50 yard line and they lost yardage and went back into their own territory immediately. So both teams are struggling right now. The big story I've got so far is the 6 foot 7, 225 tight end Shane Skidmore. Mead has limited him to one catch.

They've done a good job locking him up well and he's spent most of the second quarter on the sideline. Took his shoulder pads off. He's on crutches over there with a left ankle injury it looked like. So I don't think we're going to see him again. It's a shame because this is a guy that can change the complexity of a football game and he's one.

Like you said, he's one catch and out right now. Well, that would be big for me. Let's take a look around, broader the rest of the Greater Spokane League here. Dave, you're responsible for covering all of these teams. As we take a look at the 2023 season last year, kind of like the last couple years before had been G Prep.

Then kind of a three way tie between Mead, Central Valley, Mount Spokane, 2023. What do you see? I hate to say it, but I think we're going to see more of what we've seen. You know, Mount Spokane looked really good week one. Gonzaga Prep rolled up 340 yards on the ground.

You know, I don't, I don't know if people have heard, but Mount Spokane likes to run the ball. I mean Gonzaga Prep likes to run the ball and they did. They've got a new feature back there, but it's same as it ever was. I think the biggest story in the GSL this year to watch is going to be at the 2A ranks with Rogers High School. You know, they got out to a 35 to nothing win.

Looked really good against admittedly a depleted medical Lake squad. But they received eight votes for the in the Associated Press poll after week one. So this is a team with Aaron Kinsey their quarterback. He's a guy that can take it to the house every time he touches the ball. One last question.

Do you think that Downtown Stadium is going to be ready on September 29th? That's what they say. I was there last week. There's a an awful lot of cleanup to do, but it's going to be great once they get it to open up. You know, the home stands, you know it's all individual seating.

The stands are right down on the field, so it's going to be loud. It's going to be exciting. They'll have turf down. I don't know if they'll have locker rooms, but they'll be playing on the 28th. But there's still an awful lot of cleanup to do.

So what do you think of this, this nice little baseball game that we have going? We have a, we have a two hitter going into the fourth inning right now. Halftime score between me high school and University High school here in week two of the high school football season. Mead 0U High 0 here at Meads Union Stadium. Paul, let's take a look at the halftime stats that we have.

U high 26 plays, 56 yards. They've had the ball for 15 minutes and 30 seconds. Mead has gone 20 plays for 47 yards in 8 minutes and 58 seconds. So UI has done a good job holding onto the ball. They've done a better job running at least moving the ball.

That said, Mead's had a couple breakaway plays or ones that were called back. Well, they've had penalties. University had the muffed kick. You tried to fumble, you know, tried to pick up the kick and advance. It caused a fumble but Mead couldn't do anything with it.

And then they had a chance to get into, you know, inside the 50 with U high and then went backwards because of penalties. So penalties have been crucial in this game. Both of these teams have shot themselves in the foot. But the defensive has also stepped up and played very well in my opinion and made it very difficult for these plays to sustain drives and to continue to move the ball down the field. Are you surprised to see only about 100 yards of total offense between these two teams?

I am. I'm very surprised because I thought they had. But then interesting, Dave Nichols comes in and says that Shane Skidmore is the one that's, you know, kind of injured our big six seven guy and was seen on the sideline on crutches. That's not a good sign. Some Kind of ankle issue.

So hopefully that young man will be okay. That's. That would be a big loss for University because he means so much on both sides of the ball as a defender and one of the premier tight ends in the state of Washington. Well, you gotta hope he's okay. Not only because he's a star, not only because he's one of the best players in the Greater Spokane League.

Also, how heartbreaking would it be to go down this early in the season if you had to miss games this early? That would be awful. Yeah, I mean, you know, and it's never a good time to get. To get injured. I've had to fight through injuries, you know, in college and I was pretty lucky.

I played both ways in both high school and junior college. Didn't really. I never really got hurt, you know, I mean, I got beat up, but I wasn't. I was always able to come back. You know, college, that's a different deal.

And then of course, the pros, that's completely different in terms of what's going on. So you don't want to see these kids have to have issues, have to overcome that kind of stuff. We'll come back, we'll give you some more cool things that are going on here. Halftime kind of mellow. There's no bands out on the field.

Everybody's kind of going to the concessions to stand to get their hot dogs and their nachos and their pops, you know. And it's been a good crowd tonight. I'm proud to see the Mead faithful come out in university doing their thing. You've got to feel good about that as the professor over there doing a great job. Hoorah.

Okay. All right, halftime almost done here between the University High School Titans and the Mead Panthers. Here's how this game has gone. Six punts, seven first downs between the two teams, zero points. The defenses have been great.

The offenses have had minimal opportunity to break plays open. Paul, you know we probably are going to get broadcasters of the year for this, for this game to make it sound somewhat entertaining. So if you're all, I think it's the game, I think it's great. I'm a defensive guy, it's good. And let's give the defense's credit, they have stepped up, they made it very difficult for the offense.

You know, unfortunately, Meade doesn't have their best quarterback and U High doesn't have their best athlete in terms of the tight end and defensive end who's 6, 7. So you take those two guys out of the mix, that makes it difficult here. So both of the teams actually right now, University is on the field stretching and warming up. Meade is just coming out of the locker room here. They're going to get the same opportunity here, so we'll see if they make any.

And there's one of my all time favorite guys right there, Dr. Meathee. Hell of a baseball umpire too. I'm really proud of you. And he's lost a ton of weight.

He looks really good. So good to see you. Anyway, very cool, man. He's been at Rogers for many, many years and he's one of our better high school umpires. Moving up.

I had a chance to work with him this summer. He's one of the nicest people you want to meet too. Very good guy. All right, the teams are back on the field. University High School has retaken the field on the right side of this turf here at Meads Union Stadium wearing their white uniforms with maroon helmets.

As for Meade, they're on the left side of the field running their lines. They are wearing navy uniforms with gray helmets and yellow numbering. Somebody has to make a play. So what's it going to be? Is it going to be a big play?

Is it going to be a double pass? Is it going to be maybe a kick return or something or an interception return? You know, both of these defenses are throwing a shutout right now. Kudos to the defense. The offense is going to have to step up, get their timing back early in the season.

You know, in terms of how things go, Greg, offenses traditionally are a little bit slow and it takes them a while to get their timing. Defenses traditionally come out, you know, ripping and snorting early. So it's the second game of the year. These defenses are on point right now and they're playing well. Other games we're watching coming up tomorrow night and around the rest of the Greater Spokane League for the weekend.

Rogers taking on Grangeville, a fun rivalry game in week two. Moscow Pullman tomorrow night. Lakeside East Valley will be on the dock at as well. Riverside at Shadow Park. Colville takes on North Central.

That's a fun early season game. West Valley will take on Lakeland then. Boy, that's going to be a fun game. Cheney, Ferris, some good skill in slot athletes on those teams and get a chance go out and support, you know, the athletes and all the sports. It's a great chance.

Trust me, as a parent, I've had players come through. You know, my kids had a chance to play from, you know, the little kids through middle school, through high school. They were fortunate enough to go on and play college. It goes so fast. So enjoy the process, enjoy the time, you know, where you can come out and support the kids, support the families and have a lot of fun because before you know it, they're going to be grown up and having their own kids doing their own thing.

Other games in the Greater Spokane League worth watching this weekend. Now you get to the heavy hitters, Lewis and Clark at Central Valley in week two. That's a fun one. Ridgeline, Mount Spokane and Prep done at Inglewood in California. But I got to tell you, Paul, if you had handed me the GSL schedule a couple of weeks ago and said, what do you want week two?

I want this game. Yeah, I do too. That's why we did it. Yeah, we thought it made sense, you know, and it's just. It's just interesting to see both of these teams are trying to get their first win.

Both of these teams are dealing with injuries right now. Both of these teams are trying to get an identity on offense. And so which team is going to be able to punch through here in the second half and make that happen? Unfortunately, our game's at six, so we have an hour pre game. So they'll be like in the halftime when we we come on. The point is I will listen to you guys when I'm on the way back from Pullman. That bolsters our listenership. Up to seven now.

All right, so here's you high on the right side of the 50 to put it in the air. That ball is away. A low line drive kick off the hands of Mead's Garrett Miller. He picks it up with a 25 to 30. Spins up past the 30.

He's going to have really good field position. He got to the 35 on the right hash mark. We see some shoving back at the 45 after the play, but the referees will not call it. Meade takes over with a great field position at their own 35. That was Austin Frederick, the big tackle for me.

He had this little wide receiver down there. He took him from the 35 yard line all the way down to about the 15, you know, and it looked like in that movie Blindside, where the guy picked that goofy defensive end up and pushed him all the way down the field. That threw him over the fence. There's just no fence there. But everything else pretty much took place.

11:50 to go here in the third quarter as we get started, Mead comes out on offense at their own 35 yard line. Look at no huddle. One receiver on the left side of the 50. Three receivers split to the left, two to the right. Open set for J.

J. lehman. Mead called a timeout before the first play of the half. Wow, Coach Stamps has got to be furious. What a waste of a timeout.

Well, they had an empty set, they had one quarterback, nobody in the backfield, and they had guys open because they had a couple of uncovered receivers. They caught University a little bit of sleep. Now you're going to give University a chance to make the adjustment on the empty set. And the three, they call that a three. Two set.

Three receivers to one side, two to the other, you know, so now they're Going to blitz everybody right up the middle and you're going to have to get rid of that football quickly. I would roll my pressure, I would press cover and keep the safety over the top. Read the quarterback's eyes and see if you can get to the quarterback quickly. Put one more guy in the box than they have to block and bring the pressure Is burning. A timeout on the first play of the third quarter going to bite Mead?

Yes. That's not a good thing to have happen. That tells me if there's some confusion going on on the offensive side in terms of what they want to do and their personnel issues early in the season. So Mead burns a timeout 10 seconds into the second half. They'll run their offense back out there.

35 yard line on the right side of the 50. Here's JJ Lehman with Keegan Mallon flanked behind him in the backfield. He's out of the gun. One receiver split near side. It's a trick play ball the ground back of the 30 yard line and Mead managed to fall on it.

Heads up play by Jimmy Fromm, but boy Paul, that Paul. Listen, that's the second time they have run that multiple jets sweep play. That's the second time they've messed it up. And they were open. It was wide open to the wide side.

They had it blocked over there. Just did not get the football to From. Hit him on the hip so he couldn't get his hands back. That's on the quarterback again. Got a backup quarterback not used to doing that.

You've got to put that ball in his bread basket or that's a tough handle. Loss of five on the play. Second down and 15. It's a handoff up the gut to Jimmy from. He's got some space.

35, 40. Passed it to the 45. Nice run. Jumps out of bounds. One yard shy of the first down.

It's going to be third and boy, very, very short. Great run. Jimmy Fromm is finding space to break away. Yeah, that was Oldendorf. Orendorf Nolan, the inside linebacker that chased him down.

He showed some pretty good speed, you know that young man. It's only a junior chasing him down like that. Third down and three. Handoff up the middle to Fromm. He got man a little more than the line of scrimmage.

I think he's going to be short. I think it's going to be fourth and one from their own 45. I'm going for this and if I'm university I'm going to put pressure on it. Heck with the punting stuff. Let's you know how they're going to punt or maybe, maybe they're going to come in and set.

Well, here's the thing, their quarterback is the punter, J. J. lehman. Now there you go. So we'll see what they do.

Workman goes to the sideline, 4th and 1. What are they going to do? They're bringing out their offense. Got a heavy set here. They're going to run the ball to the right side.

Pistol set for Mead. Direct snap coming to Keegan Mallon trying to get him to jump. Here's the snap. Direct snap. Mallon on his feet past the 50.

It's a first down. The 40, the 35, the 30 down the right sideline. Mallon inside the 20, down to the 15. A huge gain of 35 yards for the Mead Panthers into U High territory for a big demon Orthodontics first down. How about that Mallon?

They kind of got him, it looked like. I thought they jumped. And just a great play that time, you know, getting downfield there very well blocking. Workman was out there on the corner, he was able to sustain the block. So just a nice job.

But you've got a flag downfield. Where? On the opposite side of the Uhai side at the U high 10. Wow. Where the tackle was made.

It's like that's going backwards. See again, penalties. You have a great run and then it gets wiped out by a penalty. Or they're going to add this to the end of the run, which would be a huge play. This would be the best play of the day offensively for either team.

Yes. So Keegan Mallon got all the way down to the 15 yard line. No foul. There is no foul. It'll go down to the 15.

And for the first time tonight with 957 to go in the third quarter with a 00 score, one of these teams is knocking on the door and it's the Mead Panthers. Well, it was excellent blocking. They ran a bunch. They had three backs plus a fullback and they just ran right behind that. But what Allen did that was really smart or Mallon did, is he cut back left.

He cut back between the guard and the center because University was over pursuing on that play. All right, here come the Mead Panthers down at the U high 15. One receiver split out each way from is in the slot. Keegan Mallon in the backfield, turns and hands off. No, it's a fake.

Lehman's going to keep it himself. Inside the 10, the 5 to the pylon. Touchdown Mead The Panthers are on the board. It's six nothing with 950 to go in the third quarter. That was just a great run that time by Lehman.

He just, he knew what he had to do. Great blocking. He faked me out. I was looking for the run going to the left side. Then he just held onto that and that, you know, those two big runs.

This is kind of what we expected for Mead in this game. Let's give university credit. Remember, six guys are playing both ways. You might be a little bit tired right now. You've got guys, you know, kind of gassed here early in the season.

Mead starting to put the pedal on, on the floor here with their, with their offense. And I have to try to put this one through the uprights for Mead is Gabe Muller. Puts it up, puts it in. Stays between the tackles, gets a gain of three or four up the middle. Okay, Paul, so Mead is finally on the board. U High has great players, but they have not been able to advance it down the field. Well, Mead has done a nice job defensively that, that front seven I've been impressed by. And their corners have done a nice job too.

They played good defense. You know, let's give credit to where credit is due both of these defense, with the exception of those two plays, you know, by the Titan defense, that big fourth down run, that set up the touchdown run. So that, that was a backbreaker and you can tell that university's getting a little bit tired here. Second down and six here for U High. Bunch pistol formation loaded off to the right.

Walcott out of the gun. He's gonna keep it himself. No, it's a swing play. Gives it along to Antonio Allen, but he's gobbled up, made defense, got there first. Good group tackle.

It'll be third down and long for you high Paul, thanks to my handy dandy binoculars here. Just look to the far sideline looking for Shane Skidmore, their star 6 foot 7 tight end. Not only is he on crutches, he's out of his uniform. Oh boy. That's bad news for University because he's, he's a star and you don't want to see a young man like that injured.

Open backfield for the senior lefty quarterback Caleb Walcott drops back, has a little time. Comeback route, passes complete near the first down. Marker for Dominic Victor, but I think he's just a little bit short. It'll be what, fourth and one, I think they go for it. They're down.

They're down. A touchdown. They've got. They've got to figure out a way they can't kick the ball back. The offense for me is feeling pretty good about themselves with that score.

Well, I think they are going to punt now. So, you know. No way. 4th and 1. 4th.

4th and 2, 4th and 2. That's. I think that's the right decision. I really do. I think you got to kick it away because if you don't, something happens here, you get stuff you're giving me who's feeling really good about themselves right now.

Caleb Walcott, the quarterback for U High will get back to punt it away. He's standing back at their own 30 on the right side of the 50. It's a fake. He throws. It is caught.

It is caught. U high picks it up across the 50 yard line on the fake punt. That's the good news about your quarterback being your punter. It was caught by Bobby, Bobby Jones, the quarterback. That was a fake.

So two fourth down plays have been big plays here. One for Meadow bouncing it to the outside, doing a great job of getting down the field. And that was. That was Mullen. And then they come out on fourth down and Bobby Jones who's really played well, he's had two tackle for losses, a couple other tackles and he gets a catch on the fake on the fourth down play.

All right, but some bad news. Bobby Jones, who made the play is still down and has his hands on his head. He's hurt at midfield after that dry. They've got a leg up there. It looks like he might be cramping.

Well, better than an injury. Yeah, that's not fun either because your calves, whatever is cramping up is going to be awfully sore and you have a long way to go. I mean you're not even a third of the way through the quarter here. That's a lot of running. So gatorade get those electrolytes in.

You eat a lot of bananas during the week. Get that potassium level up there and drink lots of water. Not Red Bull water. Get that body. You got to hydrate that body.

Are kids drinking Red Bull at practice? Oh, I don't know. My daughter loves that thing. You know, we got to talk to her about that. Way too much sugar.

Fair enough. Okay, so he's gonna be okay, but he's. Yeah, he's okay. He's cramping and he's one of those guys that's. Yeah, he's playing.

No, I think he's just playing defense. But he's played very well on defense. He got up. He's gonna be fine. Great job on fourth down.

Excellent call. Let's give the coaching staff some kudos for, you know, sucking it up and having a. Having a fake play, fake punt on fourth down and throwing the ball to Jones and converting. Well done. One of the good parts about having your quarterback is your punter.

You can pull that out once a game. Well, in high school, a lot of your great athletes, it's like your shortstop in baseball, they're probably the best athlete on the team. Quarterback, most of the time is going to be your best athlete on the team. And they just do a lot of different things there. That was just a great job by him.

All right, seven minutes to go in the third quarter. Mead seven, University nothing. But the Titans are driving and now they're on the Mead 48, driving right to left across your radio dial. Walcott out of the gun. Three receivers split.

Look into his halfback, drops back. He's going to roll out right past the 45, down to the 40, toward the 35 bounds. That should, that should be a David Orthodontics first down. Seaver's got to turn back inside when he sees that, that Walcott took off at quarterback. He's got to peel back inside and look for that guy to block.

If he does that, I think Walcott still run it, but the safety was able to come over there and blew him up on the sideline. If I'm the quarterback and I saw that, I said, dude, put at least a hand on him. Anything slow him down, don't whiff, don't just not make a play. Try to get a helmet on somebody. He got down to the 37 yard line and here looks, here comes U High.

This is the, the best they've looked, I think, on a couple consecutive plays so far tonight. 640 to go in the third quarter. Three receivers to the left for Walcott. One to the right, good snap at the letters. Drops back looking deep downfield.

He dumps it off. Flag coming from the backfield. I think we might have a roughly a passer, a late hit on the quarterback because Walcott went down right at the feet of the two defenders that hit Walcott. So that'll be interesting. Maybe it roughing the passer?

I think so. Or a hold. Yep, it's gonna be a hold. Really? I think he moved back 10 yards holding on the offense.

That's a tough call for you High, who had looked so good the last couple plays. Yeah, that's disappointing. And you know, it's tough, it's tough to sustain the blocks. And that's the thing that this defensive front has done a nice job. They've, they've been pressuring, they've stopped the run and you got to pick your poison, you know, and so if you could rush forward and drop, drop seven, that's good.

There's small windows for your quarterback to try to fit that football in there. And, and I think this offensive line that we talked about was a little undersized. And you take Skidmore out of there at 6 7, you know, 225 pounds. That's a big body to add in there to be able to help you on pass pro. All of a sudden, what had been a great drive so far for you, High is going to be first down and 20.

And now they'll be stuck where they began a few minutes ago, back at their own 40, the Mead 47 yard line. So we'll see what they do. Walcott has had massive improvement as the years have gone on. This is his third year as a starter as a senior now he can still sling it, but his progressions have gotten better. Let's see what he does.

He'll have to read here on 1st and 20. Throws to the far side. The pass is complete. He's got his younger brother, Peyton Walcott. He gets to around the 40, gain of 8 or 9.

I think they spent a couple of years in the backyard doing, doing those routes running against the shrubs. Go up to the, you know, the jungle gym, turn right. I bet they still are. I agree. So there's that combination there.

And I think when you get, when things get tight, you look for comfort levels. Guess what? He's your brother. I'm going to find him now. I'm going to put the football on his hands and give him a chance to make some plays now that Skidmore's out of there.

He kind of lost his security blanket, so his brother's that blanket now. Gain of nine. Second down and 11 for U high. The passing game is finally working. Here comes the snap.

Handoff up the middle goes nowhere. Logan Troutman swallowed. Loss of one or two. It's going to be, man. Third and 12, third and 13.

Poor Logan really had no place to go. I mean there was no room whatsoever to run up the middle and you know, he kind of came to a screeching halt. And as a running back, once you lose your momentum, you're toast. You hear the bell sound me defense trying to get loud for third and long, but that has not meant anything. And for whom the bell tolls.

I think It's Metallica, not ACDC. I like Metallica. Well, I like ACDC too. Third down and 12 for U High. They have to get down to the mead.

What 27 yard line. Here's the snap. Pressure coming. Walcott's throwing. He's hit from the near side.

Ball pops out and it's going to be incomplete instead of a fumble. But boy, Connor Gallagher laid him out on a huge blind side hit. Yeah, that was a great. That was a great. That's basically a sack and a quarterback pressure.

So you know he doesn't get credit for the sack because the ball popped out, right? But he gets a QB hurry on that one and a big hit. And that's the blind. That's basically his blind side because he's the lefty over there. So now they're going to have to punt the ball and pin them.

Remember the last time they got in this formation they faked it. So what you're gonna see me do is play safe on the defense where they're gonna cover everybody up. They're gonna play a regular defense and just basically say you're not gonna catch the football because we're gonna cover you like a defender. 4th and 12 and this time they will punt. Walcott puts it in the air.

All right, 5:32 to go here in the third quarter on the RV's GSL Game of the Week on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM. Mead Panthers 7, University Titans, nothing. You had a really good drive going, Paul. And then they blew it on penalties.

Yeah, and that's been kind of their. Their coup de gras. The penalties have really been a tough thing and it's kind of knocked the skis out from underneath you high there. That was unfortunate because that was their best drive of the night and they were able to convert on fourth down on that fake punt, which was awesome. And you don't take advantage of that.

That. That hurts you. All right, so Mead takes over after the fair catch on the punt from their own 11 yard line. Layman out of the backfield. He has Mallon and from with him the two running backs.

Turns and hands off on a sweep. It's Max Workman between the tackles. UHAI was ready for it. Stopped them for a loss of five. Little inside handoff.

They have motion going to the tight side of the field, then they come back to the wide side of the field and just try to bounce that off between the tackle and the tight end. Nice job of the running back cutting up field but well played by the DN and the inside backer. They were able to come over and scrape and make the tackle there. So they picked up four yards on that. But it could have been a bigger play had that linebacker not done a nice job on filling the hole.

Absolutely no doubt about it. That was a gain of four on the play. It'll be second and six if you high gives up a touchdown to meet on this drive. They are going to be in a really tough hole and might not be able to crawl out of it. Mead though, on offense they've got to go a long way, but if they can score, they might put this game away.

They might put the nail in the coffin. Here it comes in second and long. Handoff up the middle. It's Keegan Mallon. He gets to around the 30, gain a 10.

That's the name of orthodontics. First down. Keegan Mallon has really come on here in the third quarter. He had that big run in fourth down. That was a huge play.

And then right there he's been a force. He's got a good burst, he's got some wheels and doing a nice job. That left side of the line for Meade has been opening holes here in the third quarter. All right, they're going to come back, they're going to come back out. No, no huddle.

But a flag comes in right away. Left guard got a little excited. He thought he maybe was going to get a free pizza and left the line a little bit early. You know, you've got to talk to those guys about discipline at Mead, okay? They can't be jumping off sides like that.

I was going to ask you, Paul, what do you want me to, it seems like maybe write an essay, maybe make, you know, run around the building holding a cinder block. I don't know, what do you think would be appropriate for a five yard pedal? I think this is a talented team. I have all the running backs in my, in my English class. What do you want me to tell them?

Well, tell them you got to score more than seven points in a game if you want to have a great season. If they want to get the football in the end zone. How about that? If you want to win the battle of the bell, That's I think seven. You might need more than seven, don't you think?

And they're right back where they started when this kerfluffle started here 27 minutes ago. Slow third quarter. This game has crawled to an absolute standstill here with 415 to go. Think of that nice hygienist coming in and cleaning your teeth. You're at that spot right at the bottom where it's kind of pokey and it hurts.

That's what's going on right now. Here it comes, first down and 51. Handoff. The Keegan Mallon again, back to back plays. He gets up to their own 40, maybe a yard short.

It'll be second down and one. And this is a good spot for me because you can do any number. Rather. Rather. That was.

That was Max Workman. You can do any number of things with this kind of field position. Actually, it's a name. And orthodontics. First down.

And guess what? If I'm Mead I'm going to find who the backup is and I'm going to go after him right now. Alright? So this was a not a timeout taken by the team but a time taken out by the officials. Okay, what does me doing differently?

Paul this looks like a new team coming out in the second half. Uhai's tired. They're just they're doing their game plan. They're wearing down U High. They had six players playing both ways.

You've lost a couple of starters now on both sides of the ball. They're just starting to wear down this Titan team because they're having guys having to go both ways. And that, that's, that's the rub. 307, 306, 305 here in the third quarter. New first down.

Layman turns and hands off to Keegan Mallon. He's had a great game. Past the 30 toward the 25, a gain of about 10 again for Keegan Mallon. He said, I'll bet you 80 yards here just in this third quarter, he's having himself a whale of a game. He's going to be over 100 yards on the day and he had that big play on fourth down that really fired this meat offense up.

And they've been a difference maker tonight. New first down. Handoff back to Mallon out of the gun, gain of four. Down he goes at the 20. And they're doing it on the left side.

They're going right up the middle that the center, the left guard and left tackle are creating space. They have found a matchup that has worked well for them. They're keeping the ball on the ground. They're burning the clock here. They're moving down, as they like to say.

Bob Robertson uses the same articulate down the field and they're doing some good stuff here and they're doing it in a way that's, that's putting a lot of pressure on this university tight defense who's had a very good game tonight. Second down and seven. Layman out of the gun. Two receivers split to his left. Wide open, he'll drop back.

Throws to his right. Going to Mallon. Nearly intercepted. He threw it behind him. Well, it's too bad because he had Keegan Mallow on a wheel route to the outside.

Nobody picked him up. He was wide open on the left side of the field. Quarterback look right through into coverage. If we do look left, he had a guy that was standing in the end zone with nobody around. All right, this is a tough play now for Layman and Mead.

It's going to be third down and seven. I'd run it because you're in two down territory in my opinion. So you play this like a two down situation, which means you can run this thing at four or five yards and still have a great chance on fourth down. All right, they're at the U high 21 yard line on the right side of the field. Layman out of the gun, surveys the defense takes the snap.

They run that fake play again. It's from along the left sideline. On his feet to the 20, 15, 10 dives. Down to the five. That's a big Damon Orthodontics.

First down for the five foot six, fast junior running back and into the red zone for UI. Brendan Powers was. I'm sorry, that was Dominic Victor was over there, corner and he was getting off the ground slowly. Was in great position, just couldn't wrap him up. You're starting to see fatigue creep in on this defense.

They have played their hearts out right now, but Mead starting to wear them down. Down to the six yard line. Here comes the snap and a flag. About seven of them. They're gonna have to take all those hankies down to get them cleaned.

False start on the offense. They'll say it's on number. Well, it's at the number 77. There's no 77 on the roster. Early in the year.

It happens. It does. Might be 74, could be 70, could be 57 early in the year. Just remember I only have one eye that works, which makes total sense. I'm really good on the right side of the plate.

Left side, not so much. So, you know, things happen. All right, so they were down to the U&6 on the right side of the field. Now they're back to the 11. Out of the shotgun, Layman takes a look at the defense.

First and goal. One receiver split far to the right. That's Jakai Howell. The rest is a bunchette. He turns and hands off.

Coming around the side, that's Max Workman. He's did the 10 tries to get out of bounds. He does, but only got to the seven. Short game. Nice job of stringing out the play that time by the Titans.

They did a good job. The DN was there, the outside backer, the safety came up a filled the corner was right there. Even though he's getting blocked, they were able to string that play out and allow pursuit to finally come out and push Workman out, you know, inside the 10 yard line. But that was just a good defensive play. Good leverage by the Titan defense to keep that thing strung along the side there.

Second down and goal for Meade from the 8, 130 to go here in the third quarter. They already lead 7 0, trying to go up two touchdowns. Lehman takes a look at the defense. Hands off to Mallon. He swings off a linebacker and then goes down.

What a great tackle for you. High by Braden Moore. But there's a flag and it's a face mask. Yeah, he. You could tell that the back came up and he was swinging his arm.

Both the Side judge, the referee and the, and the, the umpire all through their flags they all saw the same thing. He pulled him down with a face mask. That's going to be half the distance in first down. So that's to me the sign of a fatigue team. Personal foul Face mask on Braden Moore.

Brandon Moore for you high. That's going to take it down to what, the three yard line. And here comes me. They're going to put on some new fresh legs. They're going to try to punch it in well.

Second down and goal and they're burning clock too. It's been a great drive because they're not only eating up yardage, they're eating up time of the clock. And if they can score you highs in big trouble here because they'd be down two scores and it's been tough for them. Second down and goal from the four. It's a wildcat formation.

That is Keegan Mallon in the backfield. He takes the snap, he's gonna run behind everyone to the right. Mallon inside the five, on his feet, in for a meat touchdown. 13 Nothing Panthers with one minute to go in the third. I think we might have a guy that might be a nominee for player of the game.

That would be Mr. Mallon. He has really played well. He's been the offense here in this third quarter and I just love the way that he comes out and stays low, kind of low pad level. But let's give credit to those fellows up front.

They're creating holes and space on the offensive line and they are really controlling the line of scrimmage here in the third quarter. And I think you're starting to see fatigue set in for the Titans. This is a tired football team. I think you're right. I think UHI's defense looks really tired on that drive, Paul.

Here's the pat for Mead on the right side of the field. Up and good 14 nothing and the Panthers are starting to go. Paul Sorensen. Yep, third quarter has been very good for the Mead Panthers with those two touchdowns and it's been spurred on by the running and by the great blocking on this offensive line. So nice job by those folks and you got a 14 nothing lead.

I think he's been an absolute warrior, warrior for the Titans. He's been fighting, cramping. He catches the ball, he takes it upfield, gets up, limps off the field again. That's a tough kid. I like that kid right there.

Great job by Bobby Jones on that return. Well, you might imagine it because we said a few minutes ago that we saw him without his uniform on, but we just got confirmation that Shane Skidmore is out for the game. That's disappointing. I hope he can come back quickly. Bad news for you High.

Another flag came in all the way from the referee on the other side of the field so that you might have a hold or something.

But that was weird and that was by the referee. So let's see what they, they call in this thing. Another penalty for you High if that goes a personal foul. Wow, that goes against me. That's a biggie.

Face mask on Connor Gallagher who had that near sack a minute ago. Yeah, well he, you know, again you, that's why you don't want to really go high in your tackles. You want to stay low, you stay away from the face mask. Sometimes when you get tired you, everything comes up. Running backs will run higher, you know, your blocking gets higher, your tackling gets higher.

You still have to keep good fundamentals and stay low. All right, so after that penalty that takes them across midfield and they're now down to the meadow. 46 yard line driving right to left, 46 yards to go until they're in the end zone. 43 seconds to go in the third quarter. 42, 41.

Here's the snap, turn and handoff to Logan Troutman. He's up to the 45 yard line again, maybe two yards on the play. I'll tell you what, the running has basically stopped for you high Paul. The only way they've made progress the last two drives have been passing or Caleb Walcott running it himself. And we talked about that in the first quarter.

He was their best play, you know, running the football because they just can't create any space with that offensive line up front. They're not pushing the me defensive front off the ball. Nope. So that means you got to go wide, which means probably your quarterbacks going to have to do the heavy lifting on it. So he Anyway, it's it's a tough day for for the Titans and that's it for the for the half here.

He's probably gonna slap me upside the head for some of the things I said about him, but that's what partners do. We give you a bad time and we move on. So Larry will drive down to Fresno. You're gonna fly tomorrow for Paul. What can we hear on this fine radio station this weekend?

Well, this is a tough ask. Fresno State has won 10 games in a row. They smoke wash State in their bowl game, you know, after the first of the year, before the first of the year, they won 10 in a row and they just beat Purdue out of the Big Ten. So this is going to be a tough ask for Eastern, but they compete. They just played the second best team in the country at North Dakota State.

Hung in there, came up a couple of big plays. I expect the Eagle offense to show up and score some points and move the ball. Meanwhile, in this fine game on the Arby's GSL game of the week. Mead 14, you high nothing here as we get ready to start the fourth quarter of play. UHI is down two touchdowns, Paul.

But they've looked good on this drive. They have and they've done a nice job of keeping the ball. They've got, they've got to get some momentum here. So this would be a great drive for them if they could punch it in. So back out comes the offense.

They're driving left to right across your radio dial. They start the drive to start the fourth quarter, second and nine from the Mead 45 yard line on the right side of the field. Caleb Walcott looked good last week in their loss to Mount Spokane. Two touchdowns, no picks, 8 for 13 tonight he looked good passing downfield in running. But the short game passes, medium game passes have not been working.

Here he comes to start the fourth quarter. He drops back, he's rolling around, trying to look to do something with it. Pocket collapses, chucks it up downfield. There's no one in the neighborhood that's okay. He got, he got rid of the ball there, Greg.

He was about to get sacked. He had no place to go. Great job by Meade. They only had one receiver, you know, out there, everybody else in blocking. And yet Meade put pressure on him from that standpoint.

So he saw that, got outside the pocket and threw the ball away for an incompletion. Got to tell you, the Mead dbs tonight really impressing me. They're staying right on these receivers. And remember when you lose one of your biggest weapons in the middle, even then I thought he only had one catch. They did a nice job of limiting, you know, Skidmore in terms of his ability to make a play.

They, I agree with you. I think the Mead secondary has been outstanding night. They've been locked down in their coverage. Third down and nine for uhi. They want to keep this good drive going.

Walcott stands at the 50 balls at the 45, high snap, drops back, looks to pass. It's a screen play. And the running back gets absolutely obliterated by Brendan Harvey. Yeah, nice, nice read by Harvey that time. He read that perfectly.

He came running over there and timed his head absolutely perfect. The poor. I think that was a running back that was catching the ball or maybe the receiver who came underneath. He was looking back for the ball. He had no chance on that one.

Did Harvey just end that drive? In a heartbeat. Yikes. That was a nice hit. That sent a little exclamation point.

From a defensive standpoint, Panthers have played well on that side of the ball. So you High now with 1110, 1109, 1108 to go in this game. They've got a punt it away and they're down two touchdowns. Walcott back the kick down at the 40 yard line, puts it in the air with his right foot and back to receive it as Landon Thomas, he'll take it up past the 10, up to the 15. Taken down around their own 17 yard line on the right side of the field here in the fourth quarter.

Paul, if they can put one more and that's the game. Well, I think it's a game right now, to be honest, because now you can put this together. You've got the clock in your side, you're up to two scores. Really. University has not threatened to get the ball in the end zone.

They're tired right now. I think this is the drive that breaks the back. You don't have to score in this drive, but you want a burnt clock. If you put, you know, do a four, five, six minute drive, you pretty much ended this game. All right, balls at the 15 yard line, left hash as JJ Lehman comes out looking for his first win as QB1 of the Mead Panthers turns and hands off to Keegan Mallet.

He's dragged down for a gain of, I don't know, two yards. That's about as good as the U High defense has looked in the second half. Yeah, if you can limit this meat offense to just Two yards of play. The problem is they've had a couple of big bursts. I go back to that third quarter with that 40 yarder, you know, on, on fourth down and then the touchdown right after that.

So, you know, let's, let's give the offensive line in Keegan Mallon a lot of credit. He's really been the offense here in the second half. All right, so they'll continue to let the clock run. Meadow going all the way down on the play. Clock, 5, 4, 3, 2.

Layman out of the gun. That clock is getting way down there. He gets it off, turns and hands off to from who's been so great. He swings it around the outside. It's a jet sweep.

30 yard line, 35 up to nearly the 40. Man. Jimmy Fromm, not a big player for them last year. In fact he was not even on varsity last year. Neither was Keegan Mallon Paul.

Both of these mean running backs were JV last year. How good do they look tonight? They look really nice. Give Paxton cunning. The outside linebacker was only a sophomore.

A lot of kudos on that. He saved a touchdown. If he doesn't make that tackle, guess what needs staring at a 20 to nothing lead here with 945 to go. Meet up to their own 35 yard line. And U High stacks the box, turns and hands off.

It's another trick play. Looks like it's back to from this time. He jumps in the air, goes end over end, gets a gain of four yards. That's all you need. Four or five yards.

Death by a thousand paper cuts. And then you throw in, sprinkle in a big run there. That's what this meat offense does. Very effective. They referee move that ball back.

I thought that should have been spotted closer to the 39. He moved it all the way back to the 38. So that was interesting. Jimmy Fromm, 5 foot 6, 160 pounds, got some wheels. So fun to watch.

He can run, he's got some good speed and you know he seems to be fearless. He just gets out there and bounces around and makes plays. Second down and seven for me. Turns and hands off to Keegan Mallon. Tried to go right, he couldn't.

Tried to go left and only got back to the line of scrimmage. Good tackle by Nolan Orendorf for U High. He's had a nice game. I'll bet you that's his sixth or seventh tackle out there tonight. I thought he's played very well from his outside linebacker position.

He's a junior, he'll Be back, you know, and again you can see, look at the U High team, they have a lot of guys with their hands on their hips right now. A lot of dudes having to go both ways. That's really a tough ask. This is a physical meat offense and are starting to wear this team down. 8:40 to go and Mead is starting to run this clock.

But this is a big play. Third down and seven for the Panthers from their own 37 yard line. Layman out of the gun. The run again, a jet sweep, this time it's Jimmy from along the outside, cuts, packs the door past the right hash mark, gets to the 43. He'll be two yards short.

Fourth and short for me, you know, and I still think this is a message do you want to send. But you probably, you're up two scores, you want to keep, keep the clock going there. You're probably going to punt the football away here. I would think because your defense has thrown a shutout so far. You're down to the eight minute mark here, you're up two scores right now.

Maybe they'll run this thing all the way down and get down to about four or five and then punt the football. Looks like Mead is sending on their punt unit on the right side of the 50 as they should. They'll be punting this one right to left across your radio dial. A good job by you High to get a stop here, get the ball back, give their offense a chance. And back to receive.

The pun for U High is Peyton Walcott, the brother of the quarterback, Caleb Walcott. He's back in the 30, balls in the air, makes a good catch. Back in the 21. He dropped it, but he recovers. He get, makes a man miss.

Up to the 19, spun backwards. Man, he might not even get to the 20 with that spot. He's been tackled by the entire team, the bus driver and four cheerleaders on that one. There are so many people around him. The poor kid gets up, limps off the field.

He gets to go back to offense and hopefully get a couple of passes from his brother. So that was. He just had no place to go. Very good special teams coverage. Everybody stayed in their lane, no place to go.

All right, 7:22 to go in this game. Mead leads 14, nothing. But u High has quite the task on their plate. The refs are going to mark this ball at what, the 17 yard line? They got a long way to go and they have to do it quickly.

83 yards, gotta score two touchdowns, 722. If they want to win this game, they need a big play and they need it fast. Walcott out of the gun. He's got Allen and Troutman with him in the backfield. Up the middle goes the handoff to the 20, gain of three.

And he didn't even fall down, he just kind of fell on the pile. So that's a good job by the middle that. You know, the nose guards, the 2D tackles are really, they're not getting moved, so there's no place you can't. You don't have any gaps that you can really do a good job of cutting up field on. So if you bounce it, that's great.

But the outside linebackers and corners have been playing outstanding as well. So let's give a tip of the hat to the ME defense. They've been outstanding tonight. Throwing a shutout, no doubt about it. Inside seven minutes to go.

Turn in a fake handoff. Walcott will keep it himself along the left side. Gets to the 20, spun down by the DBS flag from the backfield. That'll be an offensive line holding. Yeah, that was a grab.

The big D tackle got in there, did a nice job on pursuit. You could just see him get his jersey pulled. Kind of slowed him down. So that last drive, five plays, 27 yards, 3 minutes and 14 seconds. Thank you, sir.

Another outstanding job over there by Noah, who's running our stats tonight. He's an outstanding senior at that school with the panther logo. Was it me? Oh, you mean Mead who leads 14 nothing? You mean the team that's leading?

Sure. Aren't you being a little, a little homer ish here? Am I? You're kind of getting paid by the Mead School district, aren't you? I think it's a.

I don't think. I think you're calling it fair. I think I'm calling it fair, don't you? I do. I think I'm calling it fair.

But you have shouted out every single guy that's been in your class. Now that's fun. If they make plays, they deserve it. All right, that's fair. 14 nothing, Mead.

But u high back on offense here. Third down and eight. This will be a big play. Walcott out of the gun rolls, right, but he's a left handed quarterback. Turns and throws downfield into coverage.

Oh, dropped by his wide receiver in coverage. Wow. He was looking for Bobby Jones. He thought there would be a pass interference call and there was not. That was close.

I mean, I thought the defensive back came through his shoulder on that. But he did make a play on the ball. So the fact that he was making a play in the ball, you're probably going to keep that flag in the pocket. The back judge did, did just that. And Bobby Jones, the kid that's been running on and off the field cramping up, was still able to get open.

That would have been a huge play for University. Might have given them a real shot of adrenaline in this game. With 6:30 to go. All right, so you high. Looks like they're going to punt.

However, we have a flag coming in. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11. I don't know what that's for. Legal substitution penalties have been rough for University. If there's one Achilles heel in this game for them, it's been the fact they've been flagged a ton.

No doubt about it. And that's something as a coaching staff you can work on. You can correct that. If not, you're gonna have guys running and then guess what, that corrects that. No doubt about it.

You know how many times I had to run after a game? How many? Every game. How's always getting in trouble. That's the Paul Sorensen way.

Hey, if you're gonna go down, go down big. Lead the world in penalties. All right, there's the snap. Walcott tries to get the punch away. It's a great one.

Gets his whole leg into it. Rolls down across the 50, down to the Mead 45 yard line from his own end zone. That was a great kick. And he, you know, he had some pressure. He had to step to his right and avoid a guy coming up the middle and was still able to kick that thing out.

That was a great kick by him. But Mead's going to get excellent field position here and looks like we're going to get a timeout. So let's take a break. What do you think? We can take a break.

They're about to put this one away. Mead is rolling 5:45 to go and that will put him over 100 yards on the night and just a great effort by him. And again, where did they run Left side, right between center and guard. Those two young men have been doing an outstanding job. Also 74, their big tackle over there.

I like the way he's a cool, aggressive. He does a nice job of keeping hands on and he's blocking Romero and that's been not an easy task, you know, in this game. And it's been doing a pretty good job. New first down and 10. They got down to the U high 27 yard line on that play.

Two receivers split to the left, none to the right. Here's a high snap handoff to Mallon out of the backfield. He's swallowed up for a loss of 4. Bummer. Goes over 100, goes under 100.

Sure he went the wrong way in that one. That was just well read by the defensive front for the Titans. They got up there, just overwhelmed the offensive line and he had no place to go. That's not bad. Everybody seems to know you. You're like. Well, you look like the queen. You're up here waving everybody and bowing and it's pretty impressive.

Yep, nobody tackled him except the 26 yard line. Well, we'll see if you can get a touchdown on this drive.

Because I feel like Jimmy from is the one guy who deserves a touchdown in the game for me that hasn't had it yet. Well, I think, I think the difference, Fran and Mullen, you know, those two guys have really been the difference makers for meat on this offensive effort here in the second half. And neither of them even on varsity last year. But that's, that's the great part of developing these athletes. Here you go.

Now you're going to have a spread offense. They have a transfer from Central Florida that was really good. He threw for four touchdowns and 360 yards against Purdue. So the secondary for the Eagles are going to have their hands full. But I like the front seven on defense for the Eagle defense and I like the way the offense is coming around.

I think it's going to be a fun game. All right, back on the field here, 3:13 to go in the game. Mead leaves 21 nothing. UI has the ball on their own, what? 38 yard line turn and handoff of the middle does not go very far.
