This is the first of the GSL rivalry games this season.

They only allow 49. 1 points a game. 59 is the most points they've given up and that was in the first game against Central Valley in a whale of a game that Meade ended up winning.

They are being led by Taryn Gardner is averaging around 20 points per ballgame on the season. She had a string of five consecutive games with 20 points or more from the second game through the sixth game of the season. She scored at least 13 in every game. But she's not the only player that can score for this team. Addison, Wells, Morrison, also Gracie Wenkheimer and Reese Frederick can all fill up the stat sheet for Meade.

In that scoring category for Mount Spokane, they're just 2 and 7 on the season. They've lost their last. They have struggled to find a steady offensive presence this year, but here as of late they're getting a little bit more of that from freshman guard Lane Gardner. We've seen some very good freshman guards in this league this year. Lane Gardner is another one of them.

She scored 36 points in the last two games for Mount Spokane. They also have one of the biggest interior players in the Greater Spokane League and 6 foot 4 inch patience gray on the inside. Quanta Anderson's won a state title while at Mead.

He, we talked to him beforehand. He said we've got to block out because they've got good size, you know, as Larry mentioned, with patience in the middle at 6, 4 and got a lot of 5, 8, 5, 9, 5, 10 players around her. So that's going to be interesting. And also they've got to get out and contest the shooters. Larry, they, they can't let Bountifull can sit out there and get comfortable on the perimeter.

A kind of a Jim Redmond staple on the teams that he's coached. So those are the three for Quante for me. And when we talk to Coach Redmond, he's won four titles for the girls when he was at Lewis and Clark and the Lewis and Clark boys team when he was coaching there, he finished as high as third place. So these are two really well thought out coaches that have won wherever they've been and they've won big in terms of state championships for Mount Spokane. They've got to contain Gardiner and company.

They've got to do a nice job of turning the ball over, getting extra possessions against Mead and they can't turn the ball over with regards to what they do on the offense. They've got to have a good shooting night, you know, and I think the height is going to present some issues and that's going to play into whether Mount Spokane has a good shooting night. If they've got players in front of them that are able to get their hands up and contest, could be kind of difficult. All right, it is a rivalry game already. Just about a full lower section of the gym here at Mount Spokane High School.

Gracie Wenkheimer, a 59 sophomore. Jaren Gardner, the player of the year in the GSL last year, 59 senior. And Mia Sear, a 510 senior. Those are the starters for me for the Mt. Spokane Wildcats, coached by legendary coach Jim Redmond.

As Paul mentioned just a little bit ago, they will have Lilly Maine going at guard, a 55 junior. Also Sloan Gardner, a 57 junior, Lane Gardner, a 58 freshman, Patience Gray a 64 senior, and Abby Pretty a 510 junior. So just in looking at those starting lineups with 5, 5 5, 7, 58 at guard, compared to 511, 5, 9 and 510 at guard, gonna be a little bit of a size advantage outside for Mead. But inside at 6 4, Patience Gray is going to hope to be a problem tonight for me. Well, you also have a 63 Santucci as well as his junior.

And you know Abby Pretty, who's a rebounding machine. She's done an outstanding job for Jim Redmond from Mount Spokane. She's 5 10. They've got some good length here. It's a matter of kind of getting them to play together and work in the game.

But with Coach Redmond out there, these are two really, really good coaches. And they'll have their team ready to go. Mount Spokane and their home white Wildcats in script written across the front in blue with red numerals. Mead in their blue road uniforms. Mead in print and white trimmed in gold.

That'll be her first and the first team foul. But this is where Meade can do damage as they put that full court press on. And they are very tough when they put that press on the opposition. Here's Gardner ready to bring it in from the right baseline. Gets it into Wells Morrison.

She'll tee up a three, right wing. Perfect. A three pointer by Addison Wells. Morrison a Damon Orthodontics three. And just like that, it's five two in favor of Meade in the backcourt.

Besides this game here this evening, Ridgeline is at Central Valley, Gonzaga Prep is hosting U High and Lewis and Clark is visiting North Central this evening. That's both girls and boys games.

Last night it was Cheney boys defeating Ferris 72 to 50 and the Ferris girls knocking off Cheney 53 to 44. In wrestling last night U High beat North Central, Cheney down Lewis and Clark and it was Mead over Ferris, Mount Spokane and Meade at the top of the GSL. Mead 5 0, Mount Spokane 4 and oh, the battle with the bone will be coming up here pretty soon. U high 4 and 1 there in third in the GSL as far as wrestling goes. So that's a look at our GSL schedule for other sports as for basketball as well.

Now let's run down some of the scoring here and some of the stats for the first half of play that is being presented by the Swinging Doors. All right, so for Mead in this ball game they were led by Taron Gardner who tossed in 17 first quarter points, nine for Gracie Wenkheimer, six for Bren Smith, four points for Mia Cyr, three for Reese Frederick and two for Caroline Spink. That's 11, 22, 25, 29. That's 46. There you go.

And for Mount Spokane, they were led by Sloan Gardner. She had eight first half points, three for Jocelyn Wagonblast, two apiece for Dakota Weiss, Patience Gray and Kara Santucci for Mount Spokane's total of 17. And now with other stats for you presented by Brothers Flooring, here's Paul Sorensen. Well, for me on the turnovers, they only had five in the first half. 14 rebounds.

The leading reambounders. Gardner had three, Lankenheimer had three and Smith had three. 10 steals, three for Morrison, five for Gardner, who had an outstanding half that way, six assists. Taron Gardner also had four assists as well. For Mount Spokane, they had nine rebounds.

They were out rebounded by five. Leading rebounder was Gray and also Santucci with two. Two assists or two steals and two assists. Both of those were by Dakota Weiss. From that perspective, unfortunately, 18 turnovers in that first half, they've got to clean that up in the second half big time.

And I know Coach Redmond will be chatting about that. Yeah, they do. They've got to be able to handle pressure a little bit better. But, you know, that's about. Everybody in the GSL has that to say, I'm sure.

Well, that's why they're also 8 and 1, ranked second in the state and have an RPI of 2. They're pretty good. That press is really tough. If you don't hit the right passes, you're going to have lots of turnovers, which we saw. So that is our halftime here and we'll get back and start start the second half here in just a few minutes from Mount Spokane High School.

At any rate, as I was going here. 1:30 for the pregame show, 2:00 clock for the tip off tomorrow and then next week two RBGSL rivalry games from Spokane arena as we will have the Groovy Shoes game on Tuesday, boys and girls North Central versus Shadow park and then on Wednesday the battle for Chuck the Rubber Chicken as Ferris takes on Lewis and Clark in the battle for the South Hill. We have both the boys and girls games in the doubleheader here this evening. This portion of our postgame show is being presented by Lydig Construction. Let's recap the ball game here and have our play of the game for you. Mount Spokane scored the first two points of game but after that it was all Mead. They tied the game and took the lead for good on a basket at 4 to 2.

There was a 12 nothing mead run. They went ahead 12 2. They led it 20 to 3. Mount Spokane scored to make it a 20 to 5 game. And then this fine offensive play by Taron Gardner is our play of the game and it is presented by Adam's tractor.

Gardner up on top being guarded by Wagon Blast. Gardner with just three, just two, just one step back. Three pointer just before the buzzer and she makes it a three pointer by Gardner. Her third of the quarter as that was a one on one play and she stepped back and made the three from the right side and it's 23. 5 in favor of Mead.

So Taryn Gardner, she had 13 first quarter points and she gave Meade an 18 point lead. Mount Spokane cut it to 12 at 23 to 11. They trailed by 11 at 26 to 15 and Mead one on a 20 to two run to end the first half of play took a 46 to 17 lead. They really weren't headed after that. Had a 30 point lead of 52 to 21, up that to 40 points near the end of the third quarter.

This portion being brought to you by Village Center Cinemas. Dave Nichols from the Spokesman Review is here. GSL basketball is underway tonight. This the well your first game was yesterday, Cheney and Ferris. But this is the first round of games that will count in the gsl.

Yeah, you know they have to play such a long non league schedule against league opponents that most of these teams have seen five or six GSL teams already just because of the geography. You can only, you know, there's only so many games that you can play against 4A, 3A, you know, go down to Tri City, go to Moses Lake or whatever. But yeah, they have to play such a heavy non league schedule with league opponents that it's almost anticlimactic for the first game of the season. But hey, these count. These are what's Going to lead towards standings now.

So they all matter a little bit more. Mount Spokane hasn't been seen by other GSL teams that much. They played what, nine games, 10 games and I think only three of them or four of them have come against GSL team. Yeah, Mount Spokane is the exception. Right.

They scheduled a lot and on purpose. Coach Wagonblass told me this at the beginning of the season they schedule those away games A, to get out of the GSL to avoid playing league opponents, but B, to give their guys experience on the road because once they get, they expect to go to state. Right. They want to have that, that, that type of experience, that road experience. Playing on the road multiple nights.

You know, they played in two different tournaments, including the, the Les Schwab, which is a national tournament. You know, you know, four star recruits playing that thing and they took some lumps at it, but they also performed. They got a couple wins out of it. It's a really good experience for them. Now that was a direct state tournament type environment because you played four games in four days against high level competition.

It did. In a big place in Portland, where the state will be in Tacoma. So. And they went two and two. They, they held their own.

Yeah, they did. And, and you're right, it is a state like atmosphere. In fact, it's probably even more raucous than state because all four games, you know, they play in this and it's, it's not in, it's not in the big Tacoba Dome or whatever. It's still in a gym. So you've got a lot to people in a small place, very loud, hot and sweaty.

Just a really good atmosphere for high school basketball. All right, so what have we seen here through the non league games? As we get ready for a league, let's start on the boys side of things. I mean Mount Spokane is going to be the favorite, but there are going to be some contenders, most notably Gonzaga Prep and North Central, which is somebody we haven't talked about for a while. Right.

And Lewis and Clark, you know, they're getting votes in the media poll. They're, they're high in the rpi, so they're putting together a good early season. The North Central Gonzaga Prep game that I covered last week, just really high energy. I think I said it on social media that it really seemed like it was a winner to state game. Just both teams were very focused, lots of effort, just hard every play.

And if you've watched North Central the last couple of years, that might not have been been the Case last year that they were going hard every play. These are guys that everybody says they've got all the athleticism in the world. They've been described as having west coast athleticism, west coast length, you know, six' eleven, six' nine, six' five, six' five, six' four. But they haven't played it as a unit. And I think that for the first time against Gonzaga Prep there, they really played it as a unit.

I saw them beat Lake City, gave Lake City their first loss in a year and a half earlier in December. They look that much better against Gonzaga Prep the other night when they beat him. First time in 17 years that NC's beaten Gonzaga Prep. Wow. In girls play.

I think it's going to be interesting at the top. Meade, Central Valley, Gonzaga Prep, all are really young teams. Mead. Not as young as the other two, but they're good games between all those teams in the first round. And I think there'll be good games again with those teams in the second round.

Well, mean as a senior. Right? So they've got one leg up on the rest of them. Yeah. You know, talk about Taron Gardner.

We've been talking about Karen Gardner for four years. She's the best player in the league. She's going to me's going to go as she goes. But when they get supplemental scoring like they did tonight from Gracie Wenkheimer, when they get it from. From Addison Morrison, they're going to be state level dangerous.

Right. They're almost unbeatable when they get that second secondary scoring. You mentioned cv, Very talented freshman there, very young team, you know, and same goes with Gonzaga Prep. You look at Gonzaga Prep's roster and there's, there's senior, junior, junior and then sophomore, sophomore, sophomore, freshman, freshman, freshman. Just supremely young.

And I published the list of top scorers in the league last week and you look at the top scorers for the girls 4A, 3A and of the top six scorers for freshmen. Yeah. And that's got to be. I mean. Well, I've got a couple of names here because I've seen.

We had the Central Valley Gonzaga Prep game, which was a fantastic girls game, one of our earlier games this year, and the Dumbo for Central Valley is one of the players. And then obviously you've got Cornwall for Gonzaga Prep. Right. I talked to the folks over at Gonzago Prep today and they say off the court, she's completely different than she is on the court. On the court.

I mean, she wears the long braids and she just looks really Tough. They say she's just the sweetest kid off the floor. I haven't had a chance to meet her yet, so I'm looking forward to meeting her. But she's just a terrific player. The way she switches and uses both hands, you can just tell that she already has an element.

Elevated games of freshman. That's going to be one of your stories coming up. I'm sure it's going to be on the freshman girls in the GSL because there's a bunch of them, right? Exactly right. You know, we always try to look for those unique stories and to have as many freshmen at the top of the scoring list like that is really kind of not.

It's atypical for this league. I mean this league has always been. It's always hyper competitive. Right. But usually it's a senior laden group and that's just not the case this year.

I think. I think we're still suffering from the pandemic. Right. This senior class was the last class that was in school in the pandemic. And the numbers across the board, not just the basketball but all sports are still down.

So we're starting to see that rebound, which I guess goes to show that it's not especially surprising to see younger players up in the scoring leaders. And then just last question quickly, wrestling meet and Mount Spokane at the top. They'll decide the GSL and then the dual meet between them here coming up. Yeah, you know, uhai's got a typically good team there. There are a couple of others.

But you know, when we talk about wrestling, it always falls back to me and Mount Spokane. I think. I think usually when they're, they're 1A and 1B I think, I think it's definitely more 1 and 2 this year, but still both really high quality programs. Always talking about state contenders. Obviously both teams have state title contenders.

It's just going to be whether Mount Spokane can get enough points across the board to, to fight with me this year. Time now for our starting lineups of this ballgame as we get ready for the game's opening tip off for Mount Spokane coached by David Wagonblast. They will have McKay Smith at guard, a 510 senior. Also Jackson Rain in a six two senior and now Lou Vargas a six three junior and then Ryan Lafferty a six five senior and Bodie Gardner a six two senior are also starting and then for me he is they are coached by Luke Jordan and they will start Carson Mays he is a five ten freshman.

Also Madden Rabb a five hundred eleven senior, Brady Thornton a six one sophomore Nash Dunham a six foot junior and then Bryce Linda six two junior. So six to the tallest player for Mead Mount Spokane. Not they've lost some height without Andrew Raymond in the game but they still have Lafferty at 65 and Vargas at 6 3. But everybody both these teams are going to play outside in yeah they are me young they only have two seniors on this team. Just you look over the roster at Mount Spokane they have nine seniors so very well dominated and they're coming back from the Les Schwab tournament down in Portland where they represented very well played against the number one player in the nation out of Florida who probably is going to go the NBA as a top five pick and did very well and it was impressive.

So they went down and represented the Greater Spokane. So retiring official is going to throw the ceremonial opening tip here. This will not count here in this one but he's going to throw it up. He's being recognized for all his years of service multiple years at least 30. Was an air Force airman for many years.

Just a great guy. Just ran into health problems at the end and just it's Nice to see them do some things. Good crew tonight, too. You've got Damon Taggart, who did the first game for the girls. You also have John Eckhart and Jeff A, who's a former Mead grad himself.

And so here comes Mount Spokane up into the forecourt. Lafferty with it, gives it to Nalu Vargas on the left wing.

He'll drive to the baseline. Feed it now to Rain and drives into the lane. Hooks the pass underneath to Brady Smith, who can't shoot out onto the wing. Nalu Vargas hits a three pointer out the left side. Vargas hits the three for Mt.

A foul in the post and it's going to be on Mount Spokane. It's an offensive foul on Jackson Raymond. That is his first and on Rain and is the first team foul on Mount Spokane. So rain and gets the foul. His first teams first.

And Mead has it in the backcourt here against this. 2, 2, 1. Full court pressure. Nash Dunham in the backcourt. Gets it ahead now to Mays.

Right back to Dunham. He'll drive right side, takes it to the rim, scoops up left handed layup shot and scores. Beautiful play by Nash Dunham. And it's a 72 ballgame. First basket for Meadow in this one.

Lafferty low to the right side, tried to feed into the post. Further to Bodegardner. Batted away, stolen. Here comes Mead on the run. And an offensive foul is going to be called on Bryce Lind.

And on Lind. That is his first and the first team foul on me here in the first quarter of play. We have played 2 minutes and 13 seconds in this one. And Mount Spokane has the ball and a seven too early lead. Here's Lafferty up into the forecourt.

Underhands it to Nalu Vargas on the right side. He'll dribble to the top of the key, feed it inside. Renan now low right for Gobody Gardner. A post to post. Pass Rainen to Bodegardner, who's got four points.

9 2. Mount Spokane getting into forecourt. Mays going through the traffic, bringing it down the left side. Pitch out now to Lind Rice. Lind with it now to Mays again.

Carson Mays pitches it over to Nash Dunham. Fakes right, goes left, gets a screen, launches a three straight on. No good. Got fouled Raining. That'll be his second foul here of the first quarter of play.

They scored five straight points to cut it to nine to seven and then took their first lead and their only lead in the first half at 12 to 11. But Orion Lafferty, four point play, made a three point shot and got fouled. He made the free throw that made it 15 to 12 and at the end of the first quarter Mead had a 17 to 14 lead. It was cut to 17 to 16, a two point lead at 20 to 18 and 22 to 20 for Mount Spokane. They had a 26 to 22 lead in the second quarter of play and from then on that 10 to 4 run up that lead to 10 which was the biggest lead of the first half of play.
