I'm Greg Talbot here with University High School's athletic director, Brandon Yarman. Brandon, despite the weather not being great, when you look at this U High field, beautiful new turf here for 2021. Tell us about the process of getting that in and how everyone's like that. Yeah, it's absolutely beautiful. And the community and our student body and our staff, they just absolutely love it.

And it's been good to practice on. We take advantage of it. Football, girls soccer, band, we share it. Got to be equitable. So we share it across the board.

But it really ultimately comes down to Ridgeline being under budget, therefore allowing turf at all three high schools. So I think it was six to seven million dollars under budget. So we were fortunate to get turf here at University High School, at CV and at Ridgeline. When's the last time you heard about public projects like that going under budget? That's good news.

That's good news. I think our district does a really nice job. Well, you mentioned there quickly other sports that are getting equitable treatment on this field. For example, soccer. Give us an update on some of the other fall sports here at U High.

Volleyball, soccer, whatever. Yeah, girls soccer kicked off last week against Eisenhower, tied 2 2. And then we had a home game against West Valley and lost a tough one two one to them. So soccer's in full swing, one one record. Our volleyball team is also two games in, I believe one and one record as well.

Lost to Mead yesterday and then won earlier last week. And any big plugs for other stuff coming up here in the fall with U High for athletics, well, you know, we have softball, so slow pitch softball is off to a great start. We have a great program. I think they're scoreless. They haven't been scored on.

So they have won two games, 130 and 13 0, I believe. So they've, they've come out strong. All right, like we said, we're getting ready to kick off Yuhai and Cheney here in just one more second here. And tell us about the fundraising, Brandon, before you go. Okay.

So happy to be with you for week two of our GSL high school football coverage here in the full fall. Thankfully 2021 season.

Last week on our radio broadcast, Ferris beat Mead in a real old fashioned slobber knocker seven to three. Tonight in our week two coverage, two younger teams on the way up in the GSL trying to make a splash as they move forward into this season. On the away side we have the Cheney Blackhawks. They got blown out 54 nothing by Mount Spokane in week one. But coach Bobby Bird is really high on his junior quarterback Jacob Valance and more importantly, the tall wide receiver room who he'll be throwing to Features three guys over six feet tall, Paul, and one guy who is six foot five.

They like their whiteouts well, they really do. And I'll tell you more. The 6 foot 5 kid, I've seen him play, and he's long and rangy, runs good routes for a tall, gangly guy, you know, but he does a nice job. And those 50, 50 balls are like 991 if you get it up there, because he can go up and. And really create some space.

And I think that's a nice thing for the quarterback. Gives him, you know, some confidence when he needs to make a throw. He's got a guy he'll go to. So that's Cheney. As for the home team tonight, U High on their beautiful new turf field.

That is a young team. A couple of freshmen starting on offense for this varsity squad, but they're definitely excited about where they're eventually headed. Paul, you know, I would agree with that. And anytime you're playing young kids, it's a little bit of a, you know, a war of attrition. And you learn on the fly, unfortunately.

So it makes it difficult because when you have youth, you know, they're not, you know, 14, 15 years old or not 17, 18, sometimes even 19. That's a big difference. And so there's going to be a great maturation process here, and you're going to see those kids get better and better each week. And UHI also lost in week one. They also got shut out this time, 49 nothing at the hands of Gonzaga Prep.

So not only prep stuff, though, they're good. Yeah. So not only are one of these teams going to get their first win tonight, unless we have a 00 tie, one of these teams is also going to get their first touchdown of the season. So someone's going to be happy tonight, Paul. Happy, happy.

Joy. Joy, as they like to say. And that's good stuff going on here. And you're right. Both of those teams, Mount Spokane and Prep, are really the top two contenders in the 3A 4A division.

So that's a tough draw for these two guys. And even more importantly, the biggest win tonight at all is that we are playing high school football, considering how many games got canceled. Well, you're exactly right. I mean, you've had. You've had smoke outs.

Teams were supposed to come over. We're supposed to go over to Yakima. They had games that basically got canceled because of that standpoint. Then you had some Covid issues where you've had to have teams and kind of jump in and you know, basically play other teams because of rescheduling. So I'm telling you right now, we had Brandon in here, the athletic director for University.

I would not be want to be an AD right now. It is brutal and Brandon just came in last year so his first full year has been nothing but Covid. And that's really hard to do, not only for the ads, but also for the coaches. No question about it. So like you said, we have a good one coming up tonight.

Steve the Wingman Pry back in the studio, the hall of Famer Paul Sorensen here alongside. I'm Greg Talbot. Happy to be with you. We got about 18 minutes until kickoff on this kind of Oregon looking Friday night is how I would describe it. Having done high school down in Oregon, this is what our high school football games used to look like.

Paul, let's toss it over to you now for your keys to the game because this is kind of a game where the teams have identities. But I'm not sure exactly if we know what we're going to see. Biggest improvement is usually game one to game two or game two to game three right in that range. And the Blackhawks coming off a 54 to nothing shellacking at Mount Spokane. And Mount Spokane is really good.

I mean, you know, that's tough. You're jumping right into the fire. They're a physical football team. They lost some really good seniors last year and a couple kids that went on to play college football at the, you know, the Division 1 FCS level and also the NA A level. So there's some holes for them to fill.

But they've got a good receiving core. Cheney liked it. Basically, they want to control the clock. They want to try to run the ball, establish which sets up the pass. They've got three great receivers, as you had mentioned earlier, Greg, you know, in our pregame, and an offensive line, I think that needs to continue to get better.

But if they can run the ball, that really sets up the play action pass and allows them to kind of move the change, which they want to do. They want to keep basically the U High offense on the sidelines and see if they can get some points, get some turnovers and get better field position. And a lot of the hype coming into this game and really coming into this season for Cheney is about their, their four or five wide receivers, a lot of whom are over six feet tall. Let's not miss out on their running backs. They have a three headed monster at running back Paul, they have Jackson Talarico, Nehemiah Flat and Jeremiah Hubbard.

They've all got different stuff they do well. That kind of opens up the playbook and it also allows them to stay fresh too from that standpoint. So you have fresh legs back there. They're going to run the ball. That's really Cheney's identity.

They're tough. They want to come out and play smash mouth football University on the other side. They're going to try to, you know, regroup from last week's loss of prep. And as you mentioned, whoever scores is going to have their first touchdown of the season. And I think that's an important thing.

Baby steps. This is a very young team, only one senior starting on offense, only four seniors starting on defense. So this is a team that's going to get better and better and better. And you watch them a year or two down the road. I'll tell you, I think this is going to be a good football club.

And I like what Caleb Mattson, their head coach does. He's very patient with these kids. He's a very good teacher and I just like the direction that they're going. So they're going to run the football. They tend to move the ball passing first, running second.

But they've also always had usually had good special teams as well to boot. To an excellent. What is so much fun to talk about and look at as we get a look at the U High Titans for our first time in person this year tonight. So many high school football teams now, it's either right there they're running the spread or they're running some kind of weird modern offense. What is so cool about UHI's offense?

They're open about it. They run a zone offense which is really more of a throwback to the late 90s in college football. It's a little bit jarring to see at first but it's fun to see it make a reemergence. Well and what a zone is is basically a B or C gap. You know, they give you the choice.

So it's up to the running back to make the read and where the hole is. So it's always, I was always taught as a running back to be slow to the hole. And then quick through it. And that's kind of what they teach her. They want you to read and try to find where that is and then go from there.

And Paul, kind of a weird week for the GSL here as we approach week two, knowing that as we saw last night, of course, the Battle of the Bell meet against Mount Spokane, that game got banged, that got canceled.

I think I read it was. It was COVID protocols within the Mead program. Mead program? Mount Spokane booked Coeur d' Alene for Saturday. They brought that one back.

Now they're not playing, and it's going to be someone against someone else. Gonzaga Prep had two games canceled. Now they're playing Eastman tonight. It's a little bit of a mess in the gsl, but week one I thought was pretty interesting. Starting with the game that we broadcast on the radio last weekend, Mead against Ferris.

Not a high scoring affair, but I think we learned a lot about both teams which had new coaches. Well, I give Malik Robertson, who got his first win in his first game. How about that? You know, that was really cool. He came out and he's been.

He's been a defensive guru for many, many years, which is. Which is really good. And that's what makes me happy. You know, we saw them come out and they. Meade had three great opportunities inside of Ferris, like 35 early in the game and came away with no points.

And that tells you something right there about their defense. They were well prepared, they had a great scheme. Mead just had a tough time moving the ball, you know, and I thought Ferris played very disciplined defense. There were a lot of mistakes in that game, which you'd expect for your first game. And you're going to see a lot of improvement from week one to week two, which I would expect, you know, to see out here as well, so.

And Mead, I think Mead's got some talent as well. They just. They kind of ran into a buzzsaw on the defensive side. That made it tough. You have said before that you think when it comes to high school and college football, the biggest gap and improvement, the biggest jump comes between week one and week two.

I would imagine during a season where Covid had practices canceled and stuff, I would imagine that is even more true this year. Yeah, well, because you're just not getting, you know, on the field and it's, it's an everlasting deal. It's still here, you know, we're still having. And then you have to throw the smoke in. You had games canceled.

Roger was supposed to go over to Yakima and play, just like I think Coeur d' Alene was supposed to go over there and that's why they were able to switch and do some scheduling. But again, that falls on the athletic directors, the administrators and all the folks that, that's so much pressure on those guys to try to get things done. I mean, it's just, it's going to be nice. I don't know if we'll ever get back to normal normal. But semi normal would be nice and, and I think these guys definitely deserve that.

They're doing the coin toss and it looks like Cheney's gonna kick and University is gonna receive. Basically Cheney is kicking from our left to our right, so that should be interesting. We'll see what the heck is going on from that standpoint. But University is gonna get the football to start the game here and I think that'll be very interesting to see how the Titans come out and what they attempt to do and attack this this Cheney black off defense.

That is exactly right. We have kickoff coming up in about eight minutes here on RB's GSL Game of the Week on 700 ESPN and 1. Let's go through some of these starting lineups here. Paul, before we get ready to kick things off, let us start with you high the offensive line. It's young, but gotta be honest, we have a sophomore and a freshman, one senior and a couple of juniors.

Waylon Romero lines up at tackle, Gage Jorgensen at guard. Paul, you like that kid? I really do. He's. He's an outstanding athlete on both offense and defense.

He plays nose guard on the defensive side and he's a kid I think that can play at the next level in college. He's going to be a guy we're going to keep our eye on. Watch number 15. Also importantly, they've got a freshman at center tonight doing the snap. Shane Swan is that tough as a freshman?

That's tough as a freshman because you have to make all the line calls in there. He has to be a very gifted young man to be able to step in at 14 years old to do that. Also got Thomas Neil and Logan Real on the line on the right side. Neil and Real. That's pretty cool.

That's a nice little. Sounds like a fishing company. Oh, that's a good one. New sponsor for the games next year. All right.

And then some names you're probably familiar with when it comes to the skill players on the offensive side. A new addition who they're very high on. The freshman tight end, Dallas parish. He's 6 foot 2, pretty good for a freshman ball. They like him too.

And he runs good routes. He does a nice job of blocking in there. So you've got a center who's a freshman and Shane Swan doing a nice job making the calls. Then Parrish on the outside at tight end, kind of sealing that in there. That's going to be important matchup for for the Titans tonight.

Other wideouts, Caleb Walcott, Trey Buchanan and Jalen King, who's a really strong route runner. They have two running backs who will get a lot of carries. Malachi Miller and Dayton Thompson, junior and senior, respectively. And then their quarterback who they like even though he's just a sophomore, TJ Haberman. He earned the QB1 job as a freshman in spring ball with his mental and physical toughness.

They're very high on him as the quarterback of the future. Yeah, I agree. And he's going to be a guy. He throws a nice ball. He needs to get a little bit bigger and stronger.

But I really like the decision making he's going to have. And let's see if this offensive line can protect him. And we are back with the Arby's GSL Game of the Week on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM as Cheney and Yuhai get ready to kick off Right before the last commercial break we took you through uhai's starting lineups and offense.

Let's give you the defense. You'll hear a couple of the same names. They throw quite a few two way guys out on defense and here's their lineup. Cohen Fisher at the end. Gage Jorgensen the nose guard.

We love him. Paul very high on him. Also William Romero, a 2 May player offensive and defensive line. Linebacking core is Andrew Beastien. Malachi Miller, also one of their running backs and Sam Ross at the outside linebacker position.

Dayton Thompson, another name you will recognize from the halfback core there at cornerback along with Caleb Walcott, Jalen Miner, Rico Longo and Ethan McCurgo. Rico Longo, you love him Paul? I do. Great athlete. Also an excellent basketball player as well.

So he's kind of a thick big body guy but he does a nice job in coverage and also comes up and will thump you on the run. And the offensive starting lineup for Cheney tonight, Jacob Valance, their quarterback. They got three running backs but Nehemiah Flat will be taking the starting role tonight. Wide receiver room. They're very high on all of these kids.

Three of these kids are above six feet tall. Starting tonight, Josh Whiteley, Kern Moore, Josh Bingham and Owen Scott. The big one is Kern Moore, 6 foot 5. I agree. And that's a guy they're going to look for.

Valance wants to find him and he's a big target. Literally. Matai Jones, Adad, Anthony Moore, Carr, Ezra Anderson, John Ingram and Nate Mitzenberg. Boyer, their offensive line. The right tackle, Mitzenberg.

They love him. He's a big dude and he's tough and he, he will grind you and he wants to get flatbacks all night long. That's what you want to have in an offensive line. He's also there as a defensive end on their D starting line including Jerems Adad again John Ingram. All three of those guys two way players.

J. J. dorsey is in as the D end who is not playing offense. Linebacking core, Connor Debauch Sami Cingyo, Keenan Hahn. And the dbs.

Josh Whiteley, Kern Moore, Owen Scott, Josh Bingham. All wide receivers. Yeah, and that's good because you know what they say, DBs are wide receivers that can't catch. Well, these are wide receivers that can. I bet they're going to have a couple picks this year.

I would think you never know. And I think that's a key to the game. Cheney needs to get a couple of turnovers, same with university. So who's going to turn the ball over and give the other team good field position? All right, looks like the U High offense is going to go first tonight and it's going to be kicked away here in just a second by Cheney.

Yeah, they, you know, need to improve their bottom line there a little bit. So they see Sorensen coming in, they know I'm hungry. They're gonna get their money. I guess you never know. All right, so Cheney tonight in their white uniforms, black helmets with red stripes running down the side.

U high as they always are in their gold helmets and maroon jerseys and gold pants. Right footed kick is away from the 40 yard line. Left to right across your radio dial. Good kick to about the 1 yard line. This one is going to be run back by Dayton Thompson who's playing two ways.

And now special teams. He cuts along the 20 yard line, spins down the right side, down the sideline, out of bounds around the 30. Not a bad start. Ball. Nice block on the 15.

One of the U High players kind of peel and set up a little wall there and he was able to find a seam and did a nice job of getting the ball outside the 30. Anytime you can get the ball in a return past the 25 yard line, that's a victory for the kick return coverage team and that's exactly what they did. Good field position for University to start this football game. So here come the Titans. They're driving right to left across your radio dial.

They got wiped out last week by G Prep 49 nothing. But they like their zone offense and that is what we are going to see to start this game. Heavy Dose, you're going to see a lot of running here and then watch for the play action pass and try to get, get up field vertically and make some plays. So the lineup from the right hash mark, Dayton Thompson in the backfield. T.

J. haberman, the quarterback under center. He looks left, looks right, scanning the defense, really taking his time. Starts the game by handing off to his running back, Dayton Thompson. He bounced along the right side, stays on his feet, shakes off a couple of guys, gets up to the 35 for a gain of about 5 yards.

Cheney actually had that play stopped about a yard or two behind the line of scrimmage, but the back was able to step out of the tackle and then bounce it to the right side. The end got, got hooked, you know, on a nice block by the tight end. The young freshman did a good job of sealing that over there and then picked up a nice 5 maybe in a 6 yard game. Pretty good crowd here for Cheney tonight. For you, High tonight on the home side of the field, not a ton for Cheney, but you know, pretty nice considering we didn't know if it was going to be raining all day or not.

Gain a 5 yards. Second down and 5. Still lined up with the right hash mark, this time with Malachi Miller in the backfield for you High takes the snap, hands off to Miller, he shakes a couple of guys, gets into the second level, turns that into a gain of about nine yards for a big first down.

Very shifty run there, Paul. I really like Malachi because he's, he's one of those guys that has the excellent vision. And you talked about the zone offense, so basically there's no set holes there. It's up to the reading, you know, up to the running back to make the read. And he saw, and he saw him take a little step to the right, then cut right between the center and guard.

Did a great job of getting up field and hit that hole. Full speed. Zone offense has kind of made a comeback in the NFL with recent years on the run side. Guys like Kyle Shanahan with the 49ers. No, you're exactly right.

That's a great call, Greg, as a 49ers fan, that's what happens when a man jumps offside. For Cheney and you I got him. That'll be a gain of 5. And that was just a good hard count right from the get go. The nose guard, you know, you all, you are always taught to kind of watch the football.

As soon as that ball snapped, you can go. But you're listening to the quarterback too. And you're hearing them go, you know, he'll change his cadence. And now that he did it early, you watch the, the official, the U High quarterback come back and try to do that. Maybe third and short try to get that guy to jump again.

So we know that UHI is not afraid to throw on offense. But three runs to start the game, that is that surprising to you? No, not at all. Because they, they're going to establish the run which sets up the pass. But remember, if you're getting 4, 5, 6 yards in every town, keep doing it.

Still on the right hash mark now first and five. After the penalty, Haberman drops back into a three step drop. He's hit as he throws. Yep. And it dribbles down to the ground.

No one is around it. And that one falls incomplete. A hit as he threw on the elbow from the backside. Good rush. Yeah, Great pressure right up the middle.

And he had a guy open about 12 yards downfield running a little corner route, but really didn't have a chance to step into that throw. And a great surge by that Chidi, you know, front on their defensive front for there. They did, they put great pressure on him. Yeah. The Cheney D line had not done great the first couple of plays.

They allowed between 5 and 10 yard gains on the ground, but pretty good job on the pass rush. And that'll bring up second and five. Once again from the right hash mark Haberman. Raise the defense. Here comes a linebacker blitz.

He turns and hands off to Malachi Miller. He's dropped in the backfield for a loss of three of the linebackers came right through the gaps and they got him. That was a double a gap blitz, which means that basically the center is going to pick up the nose guard. Then linebacker on the left side shoots, you know, through the gap. Linebacker on the right side shoots through the gap.

And they were able to kind of get there at the same time to greet the running back who really had no chance in that very fortunate, didn't fumble the football. So now you've got a kind of a third long. This could be a passing situation. Let's see if they can protect. We're about 90 seconds into this game here on the Arby's GSL game of the week.

U high on their first drive, going right to left across your radio dial. The Cheney Blackhawks wearing their white uniforms on defense on the left side, defending. Haberman goes back under center here for third down and seven. One receiver split to each way. Now they move one in the slot.

He drops back and it's a play action. He dropped the ball on play action. He's down behind the 40 yard line. Huge loss on the play. Almost 10 yards.

That'll bring out a punt in Paul. I can't tell if that was because of the rain or he just dropped it. No, I think he hit the hip when he went to fake the, you know, the handoff. It hit the hip of the running back and it bounced right out of his hand. So he really tried to extend that fake, but by doing it, it basically knocked it out of his hands.

And you know, that was just a bad break for university. They had a nice drive going. They were running the ball. They're picking up five, six yards of clip. And then that pass when Connie, you know, Wampus went sideways on him.

And now they're gonna have to punt the football. We'll get a chance to see Cheney's offense here on the return. So Trey Buchanan back there to kick it away for you high and to receive back there for Cheney. We've got Nehemiah Flat, one of the three running backs. Here comes the punt.

It was kind of ran off to the right to do a rugby kick. He gets it off right to left. That one dribbles past the 30 yard line. Oh, that's a good that. It's a good U high roll all the way down inside the first 15.

What a flip the field punt from the 35 down to the opposing 15. Very smart. I actually thought he was going to fake that for a second because he kind of around the outside. There was nobody over there. Then Cheney reacted really quick.

And it's kind of that rugby, you know, deal where he just kind of one step and that's hard to do when you're running and then you have to try to kick the football. That's tough. Don't see it a lot in high school. No, you don't. And give him credit because that ball hit point forward, you know, and it just kept rolling.

So it wasn't a really long kick, but it got a great roll and has pinned Cheney back inside their 15. All right, so no score. About three minutes into this game, Cheney's offense coming out for the first time. Black helmets, white uniforms and black pants. And the junior big quarterback, 6 foot 4, 195 Jacob Valance under center balls on the 14.

He is standing back there at the 9 flanked by Nehemiah Flat. And they will run a pitch from the wide receiver coming along the side. This is Owen Scott on the sweep. He's dropped for Maybe, maybe a little. You lost a one, maybe back to the line of scrimmage.

Either way, creative call to start the game. On offense, Paul just didn't go anywhere. Fly sweep, basically you're bringing a receiver from, from one sideline to the other. And the running back really had nobody to block, so he kind of got in his way and slowed him down in pursuit. Just overwhelmed him there.

But that was really good defensive pressure up front. They did a nice job of stringing that play out. Really had no place. Good alignment, defense alignment, assignment, execution. Right.

All right, so they're going to call that one a loss of one on the play technically. So second down and 11 and Cheney now on their right hash mark, driving left to right across your radio dial. Two receivers split out wide here for Valance. One goes in motion, turn and handoff to Nehemiah Flat. He's dropped in the backfield for a big loss.

Defense got to him fast. Well, I think this might be a defensive struggle right now because both offenses are having a tough time blocking the opposing defense. And that time that was even a blitz. Just the front four for University blew through there and that back had no chance whatsoever to run the ball. That's exactly right.

Now you got to imagine Cheney's offensive coordinator thought, you know, hey, if we split out four wide receivers, that'll make room up the middle. Not necessarily. Uh, does have some big guys on throw the football. Yeah, get it out there. You got two guys out there.

You got one on one matchups because you got, you know, basically four guys packed in the inside. And if you show you can't, you know, protect your quarterback or your running back, you better throw the ball. Third and 15 here for the right handed quarterback, Jacob Valance. For Cheney, that ball is at the 10. He's standing back on the four.

It's a low snap wheel route coming from his halfback. Throws deep into coverage down the right sideline. Passes incomplete. He was going for the tall receiver. Curran Moore, 6 foot 5.

That one is incomplete. Fourth down, they'll punt from their own end zone. Nice job by Jalen Miner who was the corner in coverage that time. And let's give the defense for University a lot of credit here. They basically pinned him deep on special teams.

They lost, you know, five yards on, on basically excellent defensive play. And they're going to give University very good field position here inside of Cheney's 50 depending on how this punt goes. Well, Josh Bingham is the one who is going to kick for Cheney on the V of University High School in The maroon colored end zone. He has got to be careful here. And standing back at the 50 yard line to receive for U High we have Dayton Thompson.

That's a good snap, but pressure's coming. He gets it away. It's an end over end kick down to the 45 yard line. And here it comes from the 40 down to the 30 yard line. Not a lot of people.

On his way down to the 20, down the right sideline. Can he get to the corner? He dives for the goal post. He didn't quite get there, but down inside the five. What a return from the 50 to the five.

But you got hankies all over the field. In fact, another flag as well came in late. So you've got three different flags. I think you're gonna have a block in the back. You know, something along those lines is gonna bring this back.

But that was a great return. It was set up a wall to the right side. But there's hanky all over the place so you know, gonna see what's going on. There was a late flag thrown down at about the three yard line over on the University sideline. So that'll be interesting to see.

These guys are gonna have to sort it out. Let's get a little drop in here. How about if we do that? Go ahead. I'll make us some money.

No score here in the first quarter. 713 to go on the Arby's GSL game of the week here. Week two of our coverage between Yuhai and Cheney Paul's. We get ready to see a new drive here. Is this about what you expected to start the game or no?

No. I mean, I really thought Cheney was going to come out throwing the football over the place and kind of thought U High was going to come out running a little bit. And they did. And then UHAI started to pass and went downhill. I think you're going to see them get back to the run.

So the officials are going to come in, you have a, let's see, legal participation against Cheney and now you've got a legal, I don't know what the heck. They've got three penalties, two against Cheney, one against. Three against Cheney. He's pointing, I think he's like a sprinkler right now. He doesn't know which way things are going.

Sportsmanlike on both teams. Okay. But then he had a block in the back and they move that back from the, from the 20 yard line or maybe it was a clip from the 20 yard line all the way back to the 34. So, and don't forget Paul, he got all the way down to the, he got down to the five. Yeah, but that, but they basically marked it at where the spot was.

So it looks like if it's on the 34, that the block in the back of the clip took place at the 19. Well, it looks like they got completely busted on what looked like a truly stunningly amazing great return. Yeah, excellent return, basically. And you know, just trying to get it sorted out. And the head coach for University is over talking to the two officials, trying to get an explanation on what was going on.

And I don't think he's very happy about that. I cannot blame him. So from the five all the way back to what, the 35 yard line they go. But still great field position for the University Titans. They're driving right to left across your radio dial in their maroon jerseys, gold helmets, gold pants, and they are now on the left side of the 50 yard line.

They might take a shot here because usually when you have a big play, which they had, you like to come out and see if you can get the ball downfield. Let's see if they, they try to go deeper. All right. Well, they like their quarterback, TJ Haberman, big guy, 6 foot 4. He now goes under center, surveys the defense, four down lineman for Jeannie.

He drops back and just gives off to Malachi Miller. They weren't really expecting that. I think they were expecting a pass. He turns that into a gain of seven or eight yards along the right side before he's dragged down. Nice job by bouncing that to the outside as well.

There was really nothing between the tackles there. And he read that and he saw the end collapse and then he just bounced it to the outside and, you know, really kind of lowered his shoulder, took that corner on and blew him up there. I am liking the vision so far tonight from Malachi Moore, but that's what the zone, that's what kind of the zone O is, is you have to read that your job is. It's like the, the, the run and shoot offense. You're reading on the run defend, you know, against the defense.

And so that's what he's doing. He's seen what the defense is giving him and making his cuts accordingly. Gain of eight yards. Second down and two coming up. Haberman goes under center, four down lineman, three linebackers, two safeties.

Turns and gives back to Miller. He's got a big hole up the middle. Turns left past the 20 yard line, dives down to the 15. But a flag comes in. That's going to be a hold.

They're going to move that back and that's too bad. That was a great run on the left side. Very well blocked. But the. Basically the umpire saw that.

Anytime you see an umpire throw a flag, that's a hold and they are marching that one back. It is going to be a hold. On the Titans last three plays, two times they've shot themselves in the foot. Tell you what, we had a couple of penalties that have really stopped the clock here. We're just hitting the six minute mark in the first quarter now. Pretty the clock guy has been a little, little remiss on his pretty slow first quarter so far.

I agree. All right, so what was a great game. Gets pushed back, second down and 12 as we hit the six minute mark. Haberman goes under center, two receivers split to his right, one to his left. It's a draw play.

Gives to Miller, gets back to the original line of scrimmage, turns it into a gain of three yards. It'll be third and 10. No, and that's, you know, they were just trying to get a little delayed draw on that. But you hide or what Cheney is doing is they're bringing both their linebackers. Yeah.

So that's going to open some things up in the passing lanes across the middle. But you've got to be able to protect. So that means you're probably going to have to do man to man blocking on the inside. And I think that's been tough for this Titan offensive line, especially when you're starting a center that's a true freshman. So it's not like a college Freshman, you know, or some of those guys coming out of high school or he's a true high school freshman.

All right, TJ Haberman's gonna have to let this one fly. He has two receivers out to the right and two to the left. It's Trey Buchanan, Jalen King, Caleb Walcott and Dallas Parish Miller in the backfield. He looks over the defense, three linebackers, whole defense is playing back. He drops into a five step drop.

Oh, man, his offensive line just blew up. He rolls up to the right. He is dropped for a sack back at the 40 yard line. The line just let him right through. Yeah, they did.

They just overwhelmed him at the point of attack. But a nice job. I think that was Josh Whitley, number 10 over there on the outside that came up and threw him down for a loss. So, you know, what turned out to be an unbelievable punt return. They would have had the ball right around the five yard line.

Ended up, you know, a couple unsportsmanlike penalties on both teams. A block in the back, then you had a hold. And penalties have really killed, you know, the drives here for, you know, for this University Titan football team. They got to clean that up. All right, so a bummer of a drive like you said for you.

High puncher. Back at the 50 yard line. Here to put this one in the air once again is Trey Buchanan. That one's pretty good. Down to about the 5 or 10 yard line.

They're going to let this one bounce into the end zone. UHAI cannot quite get there. They'll take it out to the 20 yard line with 4:10 to go here. Still no score on the RB's GSL game of the week on 700 ESPN at 105. 3 FM.

Rainy, dreary, kind of grumpy night. Kind of happy with the rain. Yeah, kind of organized. That's cool. That's a good word.

I like that. I got you with adjectives. All right, so second down and 10 coming up here for Genie from their own 20 yard line on the left side of the field. Once again, it's a fly sweep. This time it's to Curran more and delay game.

Whistles come in. That's going to be delay. And that's the thing that hurts teams. You know, you basically have had a couple of big penalties that have hurt you. High on their drive here you got a delay game.

They got back in there. The quarterback just lost track. It's 25 second, you know, in between plays, you got to get back to the line of scrimmage. See that? And snap it quickly.

That's on the qb. I'll tell you what though, I like the creativity we've seen from Cheney. That's two fly sweeps in what, five plays. And that would actually been, I think that one would have worked because they did a nice job. And even if he throws it forward and say the, you know, the fly sweep guy drops the ball, that's an incomplete pass.

You don't have a fumble because that's a lateral. You've thrown the football forward. That's a pass. All right, so two receivers split out to each side for the 6 foot 4, 195 junior quarterback Jacob Valens. He spent a lot of time working out with these receivers over the summer.

Here comes the snap. It slow. He's rolling out, right pocket collapses up to the 15 yard line. Here comes the defense. Down he goes.

I'll tell you what, Paul, he was going to get sacked big time. He actually turned that into a gain of 1 or 2 yards. Malachi Miller came over and got the tackle on that one. Doing a nice job. He, he's, he's also the running back who's had a very good game running the ball.

And that's one thing university does. They will play guys both ways. But he came off His. His coverage man and came up and made the tackle and just did a nice job on that play. Maybe a two yard game max.

Exactly. A two yard gain. Third down and 13. Coming up with 330 to go in the first quarter right now. Not a lot of time for, you know, for the quarterback to sit back there.

Valance, he's. He's kind of been running for his life. So this defensive front for the Titans have done a very nice job on pressure. All right, three receivers split out to the left side, one to the near side there on the right hash mark. Here comes the snap.

Pressure coming from the blind side. Throws to the far side. That pass nearly intercepted a couple of times. It's on the ground. Referees call it an incomplete pass.

Fourth down coming up. Whoo. Paul, did he throw that one into traffic? Yeah, but that was actually smart. He rolled to his left side.

He threw it over there, but just a huge hit. I think that was Jalen Miner who came up number two and just absolutely destroyed the receiver on that. On that particular play. I couldn't know. I think that was date Dayton Thompson, the corner over there, number one.

That was the guy. He's going back to return the punt, but he was the guy that came up, made the big hit, separate a receiver from football. All right, so for the second time in as many drives, Cheney's puncher here down to the five yard line is going to be doing this from inside his own five balls out of the 15 with Dayton Thompson back to return.

Oh, no. The ball is through his legs. Can he get this one off? Here comes the U. High pressure.

Can he get out of the end zone? Well, they got to him. But Paul, I think forward progress. They stopped. They blew the whistle on about the three.

Good. I think they protected him on that. I think so too. You know, Cheney is saying that it was no safety. I agree.

I think this is outside. Outside the goal line. Bad snap. Basically a bad snap. And the punter had to try to feel that thing.

It was low. He looked like a shortstop and just couldn't get a handle on the football. Again, the turf might be a little bit wet. Ball hit the ground, he couldn't get it. And then just a great pressure up the middle by university, but great.

That's a turnover in my opinion. You get the ball in the three yard line, your special teams come up with a big play. That's. That's an awesome deal. Yeah, I would think long snaps on kind of a wet night like this would be hard.

That is tough because it's hard. If you've got small hands or if your hands are wet and you got to snap that ball and you can't get a good grip on it, you're going to be have trouble. And I would see. I see Malachi Miller getting a heavy dose of the football here, trying to run the ball. All right, so here comes you high down on the Cheney 3 yard line on the left side of the field.

Only one right receiver. Now it's two split out to the left side. TJ Haberman goes under center from the three yard line. And in they go. This is Dayton Thompson.

He takes it up the middle behind a couple of offensive linemen. He goes shoulder first down to the one yard line. He did not get in second down. Yeah, that was good though. I like what was going on.

That was a good surge by the Titan offensive line. They kind of drove Cheney off the ball and it looked like Thompson stumbled a little bit. He was just trying to kind of lean forward and I think he lost a little bit of traction there and fell forward. Good defensive surge, good offensive surge there to create some, some holes. Two and a half minutes left to go in the first quarter.

You high down on the Cheney. Call it well between the one and the two yard line. Haberman under center again. And once again they will trot Dayton Thompson back out as the halfback. Here it comes.

Snap to Haberman. Hands it off Thompson and he's into the end zone for a touchdown. That's the first one of the year for UHI. They're up 6 nothing. Actually.

I don't wait yet. They're still trying to. The referees are coming in. There we go. There we go.

On about a two yard run, you know, statistically. But a nice job by Thompson to kind of find that space. And he got good push by his offensive line. Well done by him. And University scores for the first time in 2021.

And you got to love the way that they're alternating running backs. Malachi Miller a lot. Yeah, absolutely. I think that's a smart thing. And you know, I like that because you've got a fresh running back that makes it tough for the defense.

And will Sossman into kick. He's righty from about the 10 yard line here. Can they make it 7 nothing. Plenty of pressure comes in kind of a low flying kick. Nope.

So to the 35 yard line we go here on the Arby's GSL game of the week in good for the University High School Titans getting their first touchdown of the year on the board. Let's give the special teams the kudos on that because they were basically on the bad snap were able to force the, you know, force a turnover, tackle the punter on the three yard line. How great is that?

So you've had a great punt return that set it up to the five. Unfortunately there are multiple penalties and then you turn around on the next, you know, offensive series on your special teams and you get a turnover from that standpoint. So great job by by the University special teams. They've been the kind of the story here. In the first quarter the offense takes advantage.

Two plays, three yards and university scores for the first time in 2021. So out come the Cheney Blackhawks for their third drive of the game on offense. Down six, nothing. But this is by far the best field position they've had. First time they're starting from somewhere, not inside their own 15.

So out comes the right hand quarterback, Jacob Valance, out of the shotgun on 1st and 10. Big linebacker blitz coming. He evades, rolls right and gets dragged down out of bounds for a gain of about loss, rather of about three or four yards. Yeah, that was just a blitz right up the middle. The middle linebacker just kind of shot the gap.

Did a great job of getting up up field. That was Malachi Miller. No wonder he's getting substituted for as a running back. He's been all over the field on defense and he timed that blitz perfectly. He gets a nice tackle for loss on that play.

And not only on the field. Making an impact plays on the field on defense. Yeah, and he's, he's, you know, two way guys, people, you don't. That's so hard to do, especially early in the season. You're not in shape.

You can't go 100% the entire time. You kind of have to pace yourself. So what do you do? Do you pace yourself on offense or on defense? They better hustle.

They're down to four seconds on the clock here. They're going to get another delay penalty, loss of three. Second down and 13. Here's a swing round to Nehemiah, flat along the left side. Man, he didn't even get back to the line of scrimmage on a swing route that's going to bring up third down and forever.

A bum play by Cheney did not work out well. University. I'm giving the Titans some credit here. They reacted very well, you know, to that play. I just like what happened.

Sam Ross, the outside linebacker, number 40, came up and was the last guy to kind of finish that pile off. But they are reading Cheney's offense very well. They're making, you know, reactions and they're quick and they're getting multiple defenders to the ball cap. Cheney's big wide receivers, three of whom are over 6ft tall, just not getting open. Well, he doesn't have time.

He's running for his life. Bingo. It's tough to drop back and sit there. You can have, you know, Kareem Abdul Jabbar out there, but if you can't, you know, step in and throw it, you're in trouble. Third down and 13 here for Valens.

A low snap. That one's on the turf. He picks it up, looks left, looks right. He's being chased out of the backfield, is all the way back to the 10 yard line. Now rolls down to the left sideline, throws for flat back of the line of scrimmage.

It's over his head. Incomplete. That'll bring up fourth down. It's a three and out for the Blackhawks. And again, let's give the Titan defense credit.

They are really causing problems and they're causing problems up front. They're doing a nice job of blitzing. By the way. The head coach is also the defensive coordinator and he's not going to sit back. I think he sees something that their blitz is really creating issues for that Cheney offensive line.

And the corners and safeties are doing a nice job of covering Cheney's tall wide receivers. So you got good coverage plus pressure that adds up for a bad night for Cheney. There was a lot to like physically about the quarterback for Cheney. Jacob Valance, 6 foot 4, 195, but last year he was the JV quarterback. This is really only his second game ever as a varsity guy.

Those are different defenses you're seeing. And the speed's different too. And you get guys out here that can run, you know, and Even though he's 6 5, they have people that can, that can cover as well. So another nice defensive stand by Universal. All right.

Cheated a punt from the 30. They get one that in the air pretty quickly. Dayton Thompson back to receive at the 30 yard line. Takes a pretty high bounce. He's going to get it at the 35.

And quickly wrapped up with the 37. Good tackle that time. Nice job, you know, by Cheney to come in. I think that was Cordell LA her number 12 that came down and made the tackle, you know, on special teams. Good job by him.

All right, so UHAI didn't have far to go on their last drive which ended up being a touchdown. It only went three yards. But I'll tell you what, Paul, we've been very impressed with their zone running scheme so far. It's looked pretty advanced. Well, they've got two backs that are getting it done.

Malachi Miller is doing a nice job. Dayton Thompson, who has the touchdown, you know, on the day. First score of the year for university. Good job by those folks. Stu is a member owned cooperative.

They've been helping neighbors in the inland Northwest since 1934. Best of luck to all the GSL teams from the fine folks at Stuff. Exactly one minute. Let's go here the penalty order. And they're gonna probably re kick and make Cheney re kick again.

We're gonna do this again with a minute to go in the first quarterback. A lot of hankies here in the first in the first quarter too, man, a lot of penalties here and it's stopping the clock a lot. It's been a long first quarter. Oh, and it. And it's weird because these teams have kind of been running the ball now.

Cheney's been throwing a lot. So with the incompletions stops it. But man, you got to redo it. So that's going to give probably University better fuel position again. I would think so.

So all of a sudden the ball is now moved back to the 25 yard line instead of the 30. And now Dayton Thompson waiting to receive the ball on the other end of the 50 yard line. He's standing back around the 45. They're counting on good field position again. This time a good snap.

Not a lot of pressure coming. Thompson runs back to the 40 yard line. Oh, that takes a really good Cheney bounce back inside the 35. Down to the U high 34. With 49 seconds to go in the quarter.

They lost six yards. Yep. So after all of that, University loses six yards on on the penalty. But they'll get the ball back inside a minute left here in the first quarter. University's feeling pretty good.

They're able to kind of control the line of scrimmage. They're causing Cheney a ton of problems. Yeah, on defense that front four has been a handful for the offensive line to handle. U High seems to have all the momentum right now at the would say. I would agree completely on that.

They have not asked TJ Haberman to do a whole lot tonight as the quarterback for you high. Except hand the ball off, but who cares because boy has it been working. They take over from the 34. Cheney shows blitz, drops back, hands off to Malachi Miller. Shakes off a couple of guys, stays on his feet up to the the 40 yard line.

Looked like he almost lost the ball a couple of times there. He was able to keep it. That's a gain of 7 yards. But that was dangerous, Paul. You know, that was one where if he's able to keep that outside foot up.

I think that was Thompson number one. That actually slid through there. Oh, was it? Yeah. And he was breaking to the left.

He had an opening. If he's able to keep his feet. He's going to be able to run a long ways. He just kind of, you know, ran out from underneath his shoes there and again the turf might be a little slippery and I think he was trying to adjust the ball from his right hand to his left hand to get outside, so so he tackled himself.

And that is Dayton Thompson in the backfield. After the gain of 7 yards, here comes Haberman, gives it off to the right side. Soblitz is coming, bounces to the outside. Thompson dropped for a loss this time. That'll bring up third down.

That was good contain that time by Cheney on the left side. A very nice job by the defensive end over there, Boyer, who basically got up field and created some problems and it looks like that's it for the first quarter. Sorry, you high six in Cheney nothing and you high comes back out, flips the field.

They're now on the left side of the 50. It's third down and five on their own 39. Haberman drops back, delivers a real zip of a throw. Just missed his guys. I think the slot receiver he was intending it for didn't know was coming.

That one falls incomplete in fourth down. Yeah, and I think, I think he turned around. I think that was Trey Buchanan, number five, who basically ran down, probably should have turned around a step early. And by the time he did, the ball was past his head. So that was a timing route and the timing didn't work.

And they've got fourth down. University is going to have to punt. Give Cheney's defense credit. They get a stop and they're going to get the football back. But they better get some people on the field.

By the way, Paul, what'd you have at the swing indoors today? I actually have the breakfast I did. A couple eggs and hash browns with onions, a little bacon and some toast. All stuff that I'm not supposed to have, but I enjoyed it. A mess.

Good place to watch all the good college games there tomorrow. That one punt in the air down around the 30 yard line, they're just gonna let this one bounce all the way down inside the 20. Down inside the 15. Boy, that one rolls out of bounds at the 15 yard line. What a punt for you High.

Wow, that was just tough because the returner was kind of in that, that middle zone there. He really didn't know if he should come up and catch it and would have probably had a tough time doing that. You high early in the second quarter, Paul. We have not seen a lot going for the Cheney offense. What would you fix? I try to get the ball, maybe run some, some hitches, some screens, simple routes where you've got to get rid of the football quickly because they're having a tough time blocking the defensive front. Yeah, and I'll tell you what though, what's even scarier about that is U High really only puts three down and they're still getting through.

But they're also bringing pressure from one of the linebackers, which has been smart. So they're rushing four, but you don't know where the four is coming from. All right, so Cheney in their white jerseys, black helmets from their own 15 yard line, out of the shotgun, they turn it handoff To Nehemiah Flat man, no place to go. He maybe got back to the line of scrimmage, maybe a loss of one on the play after forward progress tsunami of Titans that time because they, they all three of the backers blitz. They had seven guys there and they just picked a gap and, and right now Cheney's offense is befuddled because they just don't know where the blitzes are coming from.

They're having a tough time handling. I think you're exactly right what you said before the commercial break, Paul. They are being ag. They see something they like on defense and it works. If you, if you can blitz a team and not give up a big player, get punished for it, why would you stop?

So the way to stop a blitzing team is to basically take advantage of it and, and come up with a big play. They have to get the ball to their playmakers and they're having a tough time doing that. Jackson Talarico subs in at halfback to stand alongside on the right side of Allen's. Here comes second down along this. Swing it out to him on a real route.

He's turning up. He really can't get even back to the line of scrimmage. You highs defense swarms. He's taken down at the 10 for a loss on the play. It's going to be third down in more than 50.

Well and that play is just taking too long. I mean you've got to get rid of the ball quicker than that because as soon as he steps a throw it draws the entire defense over to that side. They're in the backfield, he's catching the ball and there's defenders two steps in front of him. And don't get me wrong, I love a good wheel route. I used to play the college football video game where it always works but you got to have the guy turn the, about to turn the corner when you throw to him.

You can't throw to him 5 yard behind the line. Well, that's just it. And so what he's doing is he's directing the defense right to where he's going to go. And then that has a safety. If I see you off the corner.

Yeah, that's just, that's a great easy read for you. Third down and 16 and all of a sudden here, Valens has to stand inside his own five yard line here. Standing at the three. He drops back. A lot of pressure coming.

Just swings it off to Nehemiah flat out of the backfield. He turns right, gets back between the hash marks Gets back at the 10. Still going to be punting this time once again from their own goal line. Still six nothing. You high.

And the Titans about to get the ball back again. Well, basically he's got maybe two seconds to throw the football if you're lucky. And his receivers are still in their routes. They haven't broke the routes off yet. So this is going to be a tough night for Cheney if they can't, if they can't slow down.

You high, Steve? At what point do you maybe start to put a couple of tight ends there? What point do you start running draws or maybe, you know, hitches? I mean, I would bring. They've got really wide splits.

I would bring them in a little bit tighter. Pretty good punt. It is away. And here comes Dayton Thompson to receive from the 45 yard line. Not even his own 45 makes the catch.

Takes it across. Down inside the 40. Down inside the 30. Back to the 25. Shakes a guy down the sideline.

Inside the 20 yard line. Flags come in from behind. Man, is Dayton Thompson a good kick returner? He really is. And that's just a great job.

And you're gonna have another block in the back or a hold here yet. Two flags come in at two different, different spots. So let's see. And that's too bad because that's two really good returns by Thompson that have been wiped out by penalties. So, you know, coaches are going to talk about that at halftime.

It's like, guys, what are you doing? And once again, it's on u high. Second time they've had a great kick called back. Yeah, and that's too bad because that, you know, they would have, I mean, they're still going to have good position, but you're looking at a 10 or a 15 yard penalty. I couldn't really tell.

I'm not. Oh, crack. Black crack. Back block. So, yeah, that's.

And that's a safety issue. That's a 15 yarder. So for sure, you know, both, both officials saw that and that's too bad. So you would have been down at about the 18 yard line. Guess what?

Now you're at the 43. And that's, that's a biggie. I'll tell you what, you high tonight, they are playing as aggressive as I have seen them play. And those are things you can clean in a good way, you know, and that's okay because, and I, I like what the officials are doing. They're cleaning this up and they're, you know, they're trying to take the safety issue out of it and making sure these guys are playing correctly.

So that was a good call. Malachi Miller, something back. What? They've got five more yards on the good hard count, you know, by the quarterback. Nice job by.

By Haberman. Well done. Yeah, TJ Haberman gets him to jump. They brought 10 yards on his voice right now. Too bad they don't have a stat for that.

Yeah, looking like the GSL zone. Aaron Rodgers, right? He's making some money this year. Holy smokes. All right, 9:16 to go here until halftime.

Still six nothing. You high. They have the ball on offense on the Cheney 38 yard line. Haberman during a center. He's got Malachi Miller in the backfield.

Turns and hands off to Malachi. And here come the Cheney linebackers to push him back. Yeah, they blitz that time. That was really good. They brought both their inside linebackers.

They knew they're going to run the ball. So you go against the grain and I know it's easy to call the run because it's been working, but you fake the run and then do a little bootleg. He's going to be wide open because they're packing the box trying to stop that. That interior run. You go against what you would normally call.

If you're calling run on first down, throw it. If you're calling pass on second down, run it. Loss of one on the play. Second down and six to go here. Miller still back in there and a kind of interesting formation here.

Two tight ends off to the right side and two receivers split to the left. Here comes the snap, turn and handoff to Miller on the draw play. He's still on his feet into the second level. Past the 30 down inside the 25 to the 23 yard line. A big gain of about 15 yards for you high on the ground.

And they are pushing the red zone here. That was just a great job. Much better blocking that time. You know, Cheney blitz that time, but the offensive line was able to pick it up. And let's give the young freshman in the middle, Shane Swan, the center, some kudos because basically what he did is he took the nose guard, pushed him to the left, then he went to the second level and picked up the linebacker.

Not just, not just the young center, the freshman center, but that was an excellent job by him to get to the second level on that block once again, kind of stacking the offensive line. Haberman under center, turns and hands off to Miller again. Got brought down by the line, bracking room about five yards up. That'll take us down to eight minutes to go until halftime. That is a gain of about five.

It's good. Now they're just attacking Cheney right up the middle. They're running between the guards and, and they're just. It's really working. So, you know, Miller's just, on those last two plays, he's got 20 yards, you know, so he's probably close to 40 yards here rushing here in the first half.

He's doing a great job. All right. They're splitting Jalen King out to the far side. He's got a safety back there though. Can't imagine the go over the top quite yet.

All the offensive line just got blown up on that play. Cheney really jumped the snap. Yeah, they did a nice job. That was John Ingram, 64, the D tackle. And he did a slant where he came right down from, from his tackle position and came across the guard's face.

And I think that surprised the guard and he was able to come inside. He was wide open, just truly unguarded. Yeah, nobody touched him. That's when you're a running back, trust me. We had a high school that wasn't very good.

Our offensive line had really good SAT scores, but they were puny. So I was used to a play like that. You'd have to break two tackles just to get the handoff. Third down and eight. That's not fun.

Third down and eight for Haberman. They have not asked him to throw a lot tonight. Let's see if he has to here. Scans the defense, turns back. It's play action.

Good run. Linebackers are coming for him. Turns left, throws right down the sideline. Passing complete. Went into coverage.

Yeah, that's tough because you're rolling left your right handed quarterback. He was trying to hit the. Hit the inside receivers. Running a little corner. Rod, he had a deep route as well down by the pylon, but he just kind of threw it over the first receivers head and in front of the second receiver.

That was a, that was an oopsie throw. That one will stop the clock. It's 655 to go until halftime. Slow game moving so far here. Still six, nothing new high.

Yeah. And I think fourth down, I think you're outside of field goal range here. So I think they're gonna go for it and see if they can pick up the first down or get a big play. And right you are. Paul Sorensen.

Fourth down and eight. They're bringing their offense back out there at the 24 yard line of the Cheney Blackhawks. Malachi Miller in there running Back two wide receivers to the left, two of the right. And here it comes. Haberman drops back, plenty of time, throws for the back of the end zone.

Touchdown in the back right corner. Jalen King is there behind the defense and it's 12 nothing. U high. What a great throw that time from the quarterback. Give.

Give Haberman. He had time. He dropped straight back. He looked down the middle of the field. Then he went to the right side on a go route who ran right by the corner.

That was a great throw and an excellent play. Yeah, Paul, they had a safety back there was just on the wrong side of the field. Well, that, that was because Haberman was looking down the middle. So he's looking at his eyes and then that's a well coached quarterback there. And then he comes to the right side and let's see if they can convert.

They're going to go for. No, they're not. They're just doing their little staggered offense. They're bringing out their interesting formation that teams often do before they move back into a field goal formation. They're actually going to go for it.

The snap, the throw bound in the middle of the field. Down to the S in Titans. That pass is incomplete. That falls to the ground. The score is 12 nothing, u high.

Give Haberman total credit on that. He looked off the safety, then he came back over to the right side and little pooch kick but they were offside.

So the hanky fest continues and they're going to move the ball back five yards and get to re kick again which is always a lovely thing. Well, Cheney's gonna have quite the halftime I would imagine Bobby Bird and his eighth year as head coach is gonna have some adjustments he wants to make. The defense not really doing a bad job. The offense though is just not giving Jaylen balance nearly enough time to try to make anything happen. Well and it's, it's, it's tough right now. It's tough from the standpoint that, that you can't protect your running backs or your quarterbacks and anytime that stuff happens that doesn't bode well for your offensive production.

All right, they will re kick this time from the 35 yard line. Another line drive and more flags coming in. We'll do it again and you highs players miffed. Here we go again. Oh boy.

You know, and again you, you see this early in the season because you, you haven't had officials come in but you know the basically the guy has to be completely past the line of scrimmage. I saw that one. He was a step over it but the body wasn't. And again you have officials that are, that may not have a lot of experience from that standpoint. The entire body has to be by the line to have a penalty.

And again they'll have some critiquing, you know, on that aspect as well. And that's what the coach is coming out. He's going dude, what are you doing? So why are you calling that twice in a row? He's not past the line and he's right.

I saw the same thing he saw first call. I wouldn't have thrown that flag. Yeah, first couple of weeks of high school football season. On our broadcast here, Paul, we have seen these referees not shy about throwing the flags. We saw a lot last Week.

Well, and here's the other thing. If they have a full complement of football games on a Friday night, they don't have enough officials to cover all the games. I'm just saying. So you're getting some guys thrown into the breach that maybe aren't at this level yet. Thank goodness they're here because if not, you're not gonna have a game.

Exactly right. People step up. We need guys to come out, officiate, help. Saw a great article about an official shortage in the WIAA just the other day on Northwest Preps. Now that kick down to the 25 yard line, here comes Jeannie.

It's Nehemiah flat to the 35, to the 40 yard line, to the 45 to the 50, spun down. Boy, what a return. 25 yards. Yeah, that was a great job. Just right up the middle.

It came right down the numbers there and then cut inside to the hash mark and he found a nice little seaman there, you know, kind of on the, on the left side and very well blocked by Cheney. So maybe this gives them a spark. They're going to start this drive at the 50 yard line. Best field position for the Blackhawks we have seen the night. Absolutely bar none.

The Blackhawks offense has not been looking good. They have still not scored a touchdown yet this year. Didn't score last week. They're down 12 to nothing here. Jacob Valance stands in at quarterback, goes back out of the gun, swings it to the near side.

That one hauled in by Josh Whiteley, maybe for a gain. A one on the play. Back to the line of scrimmage on the near side. Play went nowhere. At least they're going on the fast throws here, Paul.

But the U High defense, not fooled. Unfortunately. Not only they were not fooled, but the receiver forgot to catch the ball. Sophistic. They call that the Paul Sorensen.

Yeah, it was a doink, but he just, he took a peek. They've been getting kind of blown up there. And he took a little peekage and, and didn't look the football. All right, so out of the gun they go. And they will do it again.

And this time it's Nehemiah Flats flanking Valance on his right as the halfback. Two receivers to the right, one to the left, drops back, throws left. That one bounced off the hand of a defender who was rushing him. That ball rolls all the way back to the 10 yard line. Man, he couldn't even get that ball past the line of scrimmage that time.

Third and ten. I think that was. Was that Sam Ross? I can't. I can't really tell the numbers here.

I think that was Sam Ross who came in on the blitz. 40. It's either. No, that was Andrew Bastine, the outside backer who brought the pressure. He got right in the quarterback's face.

Elevated, was able to bat that ball back about 25 yards. That was a great read. Again, they're blitzing and it's a good thing because I actually think Valance had a little bit of space there for his receiver who was running a comeback right on the near side. That would have been a complete pass. He had a quarterback hurry on that and a pass breakup as well.

So that was a nice blitz from the outside. All right, here comes Valance out of the gun from the 53 receivers to the right, one to the left. Rolls. It's a screenplay. Throws down the right side.

That pass falls to the turf. But a flag comes in at the 45. You're probably going to have a roughing the passer here. Oh, he is on the ground back in the 30. Yeah, he got creamed.

And you have a flag on about the 46. Might have a hold, but you're also going to have a roughing the passer. And Valance is down right now. Yeah, Valance on the ground, knees to the sky, hands on his head at the 30 yard line. He got absolutely smacked.

He was rolling out to the right during the play. Got rid of it, but he was completely exposed. 625 here to go in the first half. 12 to nothing. Our score.

It looks like Cheney wants a timeout so they can get rid of that and bring Valance back in. Paul yeah, I, well I think he's got to sit out one play. I don't think that the timeout will allow him to back in. I don't know that for a fact. So that's a good question because the college rule, you can take a timeout and your injured player can come back in.

But I think high school you have to sit out one play and I just don't think they were ready. The clock was running down. They weren't ready to go from that standpoint. So we'll do a little drop in here. How about that?

So that'll be kind of fun to get a chance to see that.

That's going to be a Thursday night game. That'll be a good game. I think these two teams, I see University getting better. I also see me getting better, you know, coming into week three. All right, Samuel Coffin, the sophomore quarterback, 6ft tall, 190 pounds, a right hander, comes back in, he takes a snap, throws a bomb down the right side.

Pass is incomplete. Yeah, that was, I'm not really sure where he was going on that one. He had one, the inside receiver running a go route, the outside receiver was running an out route and he kind of threw it at the feet of the outside back over there. So I think that was just a mix up. But it looks like Valance is coming back in.

So his little doink. Actually no, because they're gonna have to pump that football and that's too bad. And that's tough. You get the backup coming in third long, you know they're gonna have to throw. You got pressure all over the place.

That's not an easy situation to come in and, and try to be good. Well, university highs. Dayton Thompson has been a really spectacular, outstanding hunt returner tonight. Now he's waiting just inside his own 20 yard line on the left side of the field. The snap for Cheney's on the ground.

The kick is away, down to around the 20. Here comes Thompson. He'll take it from the 16. He goes right between the hash marks, goes left, goes right, bounces past a couple of guys, spun down past the 30 yard line. Another flag came in.

That'll be a third time. Kidding me. They're gonna throw another hanky and so that, that, that's going to be another penalty. It's going to move it back. So poor Thompson, he's just a absolute flag machine.

This is going to be the third really impressive kick return by Dayton Thompson that is going to get called back and this should pin him back inside their own 30. Well, and Cheney had another bad snap. Yeah, the snapper rolled that ball back to the punter who did a great job of fielding the thing and then picked it up and one step the kick. Actually that was a great play. He had a lot of pressure coming on him.

And it looks like we're gonna have another. Well, that's a 15 yard pass. Wow, that's a biggie. That one's gonna march him back to what, their own. I think that's another team.

That's another clip. 16. That was another clipping penalty. So special teams are gonna have to, you know, we're gonna have to talk to Suds there. He's the special teams coordinator.

We have to tell him not to have his guys block the other person in the back. If you can see the number and you can't see the face, don't block them. All right, so here comes TJ Haberman back out under center for U High. Got two tight ends on the right side, two receivers to his left. Drops back, hands to Malachi Miller.

He spins off a couple of guys. He's still on his feet past the 30 yard line. Oh my gosh, a gain of almost 20 yards on the play. He's up to around the 40, Paul. Yeah, that was a 21 yard gain.

He's got him for 41 yards on the last three carries, you know, and he has really been outstanding. And that was just a great read, Greg, because what he did is he came up, there was a lot of pressure on the, on the inside. He bounced it right, broke attack the line of scrimmage, outran the outside linebacker, stiff arm to safety. And that was a great run by him. He is so impressive.

I like the way he runs. He's showing me a lot of stuff tonight. Same formation, a couple of tight ends to the right, couple of wide receivers to the left, turns off and gives to Miller. He goes left, goes right, tries to get back between the tackles. Brought down by the shoulders, flag that might be a face mask.

And they're good. That's going to be the 15 yard variety because they, they pulled the hanky and I think Miller is a little shaken up. What I saw is the defender, I didn't get a number on him. He grabbed them by both sides of the face mask and brought him down to the ground that way. Yeah, that's a pretty, that's a pretty legit deal.

And that, that hurts your neck there big time. And I, I hope, actually he's cramping. He's cramping right now. So, so his neck's okay. You know, he can spin his head around, but the problem is he's playing both ways.

And again you're talking, this is the first half, there's a couple of guys that they are really asking a lot of on both sides. Of the ball. And that wears you out because you're playing basically two games in a game. You're playing defense, special teams most likely, and offense. That's a lot of snaps.

So that, that makes it difficult here. You know, we could do a little injury timeout. Why don't we just take a little 1 minute break here if that's okay. We'll break up our next break and just do a little one minute break. We'll be back after we take this time out.

But a flag came in after a gain of 20 yards. The referees are signaling this might actually be against Cheney. So they're going to keep their great field position here. Paul, another either a face mask or a hit out of late hit out of bounds and so that's going to move it down there. And Cheney's losing a little composure right now.

They've had a couple of tough penalties. Yeah, it's a personal foul. So I think it was a, I think it was a face mask out of bounds and That's a second consecutive time. This time it was on Thompson. They're going to move that down 15 yards.

So if, if university can punch this in here right before half, you know, they're, they're in really good shape now. Cheney's going to get the ball, start third quarter, but they're having a tough time right now with the penalty. I was just going to say there's a world of difference between 12 and 18 points if you're down at halftime. If you're the Cheney Blackhawks and their defense brings both linebackers up, looks like they're going to blitz on first downturn. And handoff here to Malachi Miller.

He bounces off to the right side, down to the 20 yard line. Has got a gain of about 6 or 7 on the play before he's taken down. Yeah, another, another nice job, you know, in terms of getting up field. Just a good run there, a good vision on the outside and I think they've got. I don't think that was Thompson.

I don't think that was Miller either. I think they brought in another bad running back. Yeah, I think that might have been number nine, but I'm not sure. I couldn't really tell. It looks like McGarrett.

McGARREN. Ethan McGowan, number nine, he's a junior. Ethan Kirgo. Ethan McCurgo is his name. Second down and three.

He was not listed on the potential runners here, so he's able to take the handoff here. Spin down inside the 20 yard line, gets it to the linebacking room and he's got a first down. Interesting. This is not a player you high said they might give the ball to tonight. So you learn new things every day, Paul.

Well, he's got 15 yards and two carries, so I would continue to do that. And Thompson had a. But he might have been shaken up because of the face mask on the sidelines. And you've got, you know, Malachi Miller who's cramped up, who had a great first half on both sides of the ball. So you, you've got to get some depth here and that's good, you know, for University.

They're creating some depth at the running back spot. Four minute mark, four minutes to go here in the first half. Still 12 nothing. You high on their offense, Dan? Now on the Cheney 15 yard line, Haberman under center.

Look at the defense. Looks left, looks right. Oh, man, did they get blown up in the backfield. Here comes the Cheney defense. Holy moly.

Connor Dubos came flying in for the big loss on the play, tackle for loss. He timed that blitz perfectly, shot the gap there. And as soon as the running back got the football, he also got a face full of helmet from Debauch, who did a great job, number 26 coming in and making that play. So, T. J.

that was, well, time. That's the second time that we have seen tonight, D guys just come in totally unblocked. Yeah, but when you overwhelm the line of scrimmage and your man blocking like that, that's tough to pick that guy. It's tough to come off your initial guy and pick a blitzer up when he. It's hard to see him.

Loss of four on the play. So second down and 14 here for Haberman. Drops back, throws to his left. That one is hauled in by one of his favorite targets, Trey Buchanan. But late hit, the defense was there for pretty quick wrap up and a second guy can fly in for.

Like you said, Paul, that's a late hit. Yeah. Owen score came over from a safety spot and just. He's just trying to clean up the pile. I know exactly what he was doing, but he came in late and I think that's a good call by the officials over there.

They're trying to clean some stuff up. So that's going to be a personal foul. Late hit, which will be half the distance, the goal and an automatic first down. See, look at that. Know my rules.

Normally that would be an automatic first down, but they do it based on the yardage, not on the automatic. They're going to call this third down and four, Haberman and the team on the left hash mark turns and hands off to Malachi Miller, who's back in the game. He's wrapped up for a loss. Fourth down here coming up with gonna be about five yards to go with 230 to go into the half. I'm not sure you want to kick this unless you're pretty confident in a kicker.

I think they're gonna go for this. Yeah, that was to Bosch again, he blitzed and if they're blitzing that hard. Just get the ball the outside. You'll bring your inside receivers in. Just do a turn around, do a one step hitch, flare your back out of the backfield.

I mean, they're basically shooting the gap big time right now. So get outside. And it looks like they are going to send their offense back out. They're not super confident in their kicker on what has been a rainy kind of cold evening here in the Spokane Valley. Two minutes to go until halftime.

Still 12 nothing. Titans, they're letting the clock run down. They're going to take a timeout and then they're gonna chat about. So coach is going to come up, say time out. That's good.

Guru you. There you go. But anyway, it's been an interesting game here. We're seeing a lot of blitzing on both sides of the ball. University's been doing a great job of blitzing.

Now Cheney, I think they're a little grumpy about what University is doing to them offensively. They're quid pro quo ing it and they're doing the exact same back now. And they're bringing pressure. This is potentially going to be the turning tide play of the game for Cheney. If they can get a stop here and go into halftime down 12, that is a world of difference versus down 18.

So now do you throw the football here? Because they've been bringing pressure so hard. I think you got to get the football to the outside. Even though they've had success running the ball, they're bringing their backers, you know, between the gaps. And I think you got to go one on one on the outside, see if you can make a play.

He's already thrown a touchdown past the 19 yards. You know what? They're bringing out a kicker. Well, look at that. I am pleasantly surprised by that.

This is Will Sauceman coming out for you. High. That ball is down on the what, 10 yard line. So this is going to be a 26 yard kick. Pressure coming from the edges.

Snap is off, kick is away. It's good. And that one sneaks to the left upright. How about that? So 15 nothing.

That is still technically a two possession game, but not my bunch. Good for the Titans. 26 yards. No, that was what, a 28 yard field goal? 26.

26. Nice job. You know, so give, give Will a lot of credit. He had a nice swing on that. He came through.

Good snap, good hold, decent protection. He kicks the ball through and 15 nothing. You highest to feel pretty good about that right now. 15 nothing. Titans, 150 to go here in the first half.

Man, Paul, you got to think all the adjustments here for Cheney are going to revolve around trying to find ways to protect their quarterback during halftime. Yeah. And I think what you're going to have to do is you've got to tighten your splits because he doesn't have the time to get the ball, you know, outside you can run some outside screens where you're basically your inside receiver goes out and blocks the corner.

Your outside receiver comes inside, maybe you pull a guard, just do again the same kind of thing that University is dealing with but get rid of the football quickly. You don't have time to set up and throw because there's no. You're getting so much pressure and you got to get outside, put the pressure on you high and make them play one on one on the outside. 151 to go. 15 nothing.

Titans, they will kick it away and she's not going to have a whole lot of time here to try to get some points on the board. I'll tell you what. I mean, how many times tonight have they completed a pass? Like two? Nah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it's, it's been tough. Not a lot. And there's been some drops too and there's been some timing issues between receiver and quarterback and again. But I just think it's the pressure, the pressure has been really, really tough.

And here comes the kick from the 40 yard line. That one's in the air pretty well. They're going to let that one bounce into the end zone. They will take it from the 20 with 151 to go in the half. First field goal of the year for university.

Here comes you high on defense. They look like they're bringing blitz. Cheney comes out on offense and a flag comes in. Yeah, Cheney jumped the right. They're right tight end.

I think he was leaning, stood straight up in the air. He knows the count, the other guys don't. And unfortunately that's gonna be a five yard penalty. And that I think right there in a nutshell has been Cheney's issue here in this, in this first half. Way too many penalties, undisciplined, you know, on the outside.

Special teams have been, been very difficult. They've had some great returns. University has and that's given them good field position. First down in 15. Valance out of the gun, looks left.

He throws deep down the sideline. He's got more. That one is hauled in at the 45. He's up to the 50 before he's dragged down catch for the first time that I knew. Finally connects deep over the top of the 6 foot 5 wide receiver Curran Moore got, he got that ball all the way out to you.

Highs 45 yard line. That was a great throw. Corner was in pretty good position. The safety came over just a step late. He feathered that ball right in there.

Oh, they said he stepped out of the bounds on 48. Yeah. So still that was a lot of 35 yards. Just about. Yeah, that was a nice, nice catch.

All right, so Jacob Valance and Curran Moore hook up for the first time tonight and I think we'll probably see more of that. Two receivers split out to the left and one to the right here for the 6 foot 4 right handed quarterback. He turns and hands off the Nehemiah flat. He stumbles forward for a gain of about five. But a flag comes in.

One of the Cheney defenders is down too it looks like. Or one of the, one of the blockers. I think that's, I can't really tell. I'll try to get a number on that. Paul, that is number 78 for Cheney.

If you would have caught that ball, Greg, he might have been able to score because the defensive back was behind him and that ball was tipped up in the air.

He just couldn't reach back, you know, while he was striding and pull that in. That would have been a huge play for Cheney. All right, so I don't know what's up with Coffin here, but Samuel. Sorry for Valance, but Samuel Coffin, that second string quarterback is now back in to throw the second down and 20 pass with 107 to go here in the first half. So Coffin out of the gun.

Two receivers, drew his right, one to his left, swings it off to his little half back here, off to the right. That's Jeremiah Hubbard. His first touch of the game. He's past the 50 yard line, down to the 45. He's about three yards short.

That was a pretty good pickup. That was a great pickup. And that was just flare out of the backfield that time. The receivers drew all the attention. Airplane man coverage.

The linebackers were blitzing again. They got it out in the flat, but he did a nice job because he looked downfield, he drew the linebackers in, then he flipped the ball off on the right. Cheney's gonna take a timeout and you've got a few. What time? How much?

I can't. 51 seconds, Paul. I got a pole in the way so it's kind of tough to see this, but 51 seconds ago here in the halftime. And go ahead, give Cheney some kudos. They're showing a little bit of life here offensively now.

So they had their backs basically turned against the receiver trying to run and catch them. And just a good, good play call by cheney that time. 57 seconds left to go here in the first half. Coffin in a quarterback blitz coming up the middle. Fakes left, fakes right, throws over the middle.

That ball is off the hands of Curran Moore. Second time they've gone to him on this drive. This time they threw into coverage. It was off his hands, falls to the turf. Big 4th down and 3.

I think you got to go for it. Yeah, I do too. I do too. And that time Kearns got to catch that football that hit him in the hands. And what he has to do, it's a little bit behind him, but he's got to settle.

You know you're going to get hit, so just settle, turn back, you know, cradle the football, get the. Get hit. You get the first down, you continue the drive. And those are things young receivers need to work on when they move up to the next level. And actually, despite the fact that it's fourth in just a long two there, it looks like they're going to bring out their.

No, now they're gonna bring their office. They're trying to fool them. I think they'll take a timeout because their clocks down to 2:1. They took a timeout. They're gonna reset this thing and not been good.

Clock management on this drive. I will. No. So that's been a little bit disappointing. They've had some opportunities at the long pass play down the university of sidelines.

They had the double tip that if, if Moore could have been able to catch that darn thing, you know, he, he'd still would be running. And then, you know, basically they had the big play to the little bowling ball coming out of the backfield. Hubbard did it. I like the way he runs. He's tough.

He would not be a fun guy to tackle. Full speed. No. 5, 10, 2, 15 is tough and he runs low. Yeah.

And that's not fun. That's not conducive to a good day for the tackler. So Kern Moore has been great here in the first half for Cheney. Nehemiah Flat's been pretty good. Jeremiah Hubbard just made a good play, but Valenson Coffin just haven't gotten a lot of Support and out comes their offense from the 45 yard line on the left side of the 53 receivers to the left, none to the right.

Low snappy for Coffin. He looks down the left side, throws into coverage. Pass incomplete. All three receivers are kind of going the same way. There were four defenders there, didn't really get directly to anyone they were throwing to.

And that's a turnover. Well, yes, and that was a turnover on downs. And you got another defensive back for University that's cramping at about the 15 yard line. So, you know, the funny part is you don't solve cramping on Friday night. You start Monday and Tuesday.

You've got to hydrate, you've got to get electrolytes in there. And you've got Thompson coming out. He's been a busy bee. Great punt returner and outstanding on offense. And his calves are cramping up pretty good right now.

All right, so University High School's offense going to come back out here on the left side of the 50 yard line. They'll take it about, see exactly the referees market here, but they're up 15 nothing with 47 seconds to go. Honestly folks, this first half has been all you high. Their coaching staff's got to be pretty happy going into the break. Well, I think what they want to do is they want to possess the football, run the ball, burn, clock.

Their defense and special teams have been winning the day, you know, and they've been able to score some points, you know, with a nice 2 yard run by Thompson, a nice pass, you know, from, from Haberman to King, and then of course the first field goal of the year for UI from 26 yards out. So that's, that's your scoring. Titans from their own 45 yard line on the right side of the 50. Cheney brings two linebackers on the blitz. They'll have Haberman throw, rolls to the right flag, comes in, passes complete around the 50 yard line.

Turning up field, down to the 30 yard line, down to the 25. Trying to get a number on that. That was making the catch number 23 for University Ohio school. First time they've had that receiver touch the ball tonight. That was Rico Longo on offense for the first time.

Ball. He's at a fantasy. Unfortunately though, you got a hold going against you high, so they'll bring that all the way back. So poor Longo, I told you he's got some wheels and he, he broke a couple of tackles. Showed some good hands there, but little hanky fest, you know, 20, 21 takes place they're going to move that ball all the way back to the 35.

Another crushing penalty against the Titans. We've seen a couple of times here where guys who are not normally touching the ball on offense as skill players tonight have made some pretty good plays. These seems to opening it up. You've had three running backs in already. Two of them have been crapping because they're playing both ways.

So nice to see Longo in there. He's a really good athlete. I mean, you watch him on the basketball court. He's got good feet, he's agile, he's physical. He'd be perfect as a wide receiver running back in this offense.

All right, after the penalty, first down and 20 inside. 30 seconds to go. Call it. 25 seconds. Haberman drops back, throws another bomb, this time into coverage.

Down to the 40 yard line. Good throw. Oh, off the hands of his wide receiver. Down to the 30. Oh, man, what a throw.

Not bad. Just overshot his man. Well, that was just another half step. Yeah. King, who caught the touchdown pass, you know, and just a great job just running a go route.

I like the aggressiveness, but I think you want to burn a little clock here and you're up 15 to nothing. Do you want to give the ball back to Cheney, Let them, you know, have a great play and maybe make something happen. Burn some clock. That was a pretty good throw though. By here I would say still incomplete.

And the clock stops. Okay. It is hard to throw a guy open on a go route, but he kind of did it. Yeah, that's true. And if it works, everybody thinks the coach is a hero.

If not, they boom. And guess what? Then they go into the victory formation and they take a knee because. And now you've got another flag that just came in on the Neil. I don't know why someone jumped the snap on the neil.

I don't. I don't know. Waiting for the refs here. Boy, the white hat's been busy tonight. Oh, Lee, no, it put it the wrong way.

All right, Paul Sorensen, let's go ahead and do a first half recap here, but we've seen on week two of our RB's GSL Game of the Week broadcasts on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM. We have 13 minutes until the second half kicks off at the end of what is technically just 24 minutes of play, but took an hour and 20 minutes to play them, the University Titans 15 and a Cheney Blackhawks nothing.

Kind of an ugly first half, kind of a slow first half referees way, I would say significantly over involved. Kind of a weird stop and start half. Paul well, there's been no flow. There's been no flow for both teams. Cheney just can't get anything going offensively.

They did have that one long 35 yard pass play, you know, on the go route which was really a good throw. I got to give him credit. But they've had to go with a couple quarterbacks unfortunately. You know, Valance has been bounced around a little bit. He got doinked on that roughing the passer penalty.

He's kind of been in and out of the game. But the big, the big things that I've seen is University's take advantage of the field position. They had a three yard touchdown drive really to get their first touchdown of the season. That was set up because the punt return special teams, you know, bad snap back to the punter who really had no chance to get that thing off. He gets crushed on the three.

They score two plays later. Then you have a nice again good field position. We've had three punt returns by University wiped out great. He's probably had over 100 yards, you know, returns if you don't have those penalties. But they've been blocking the backs, they've been clips and again I'm not blaming the officials.

They've got to throw what they see and they're seeing a lot of, a lot of penalty stuff and grabby holding stuff going on. So hopefully both of these two teams can clean that up here in the second half because they need to do that to get this game going. So let's recap exactly how the U High titans got these 15 points on the board. First of all, it was a Dayton Thompson running touchdown to make it six nothing. They missed the Pat Jalen King made a great catch in the back of the end zone from TJ Haberman who dropped an absolute dime in the back right corner to make it two touchdowns.

And then a 26 yard field goal in the second quarter made it 15 nothing. Are we going to see some points here from Genie Paul? I don't know. They've got to figure out a way to block University and University and I'm going to give the coaching staff for you high a lot of credit. By the way, their special teams coach or their defensive coordinator is also the head coach, Coach Madsen over there.

And so he's caught, he's dialed up a really good game on defense. Cheney has not been able to pick up the blitz and stop the blitz. He continues to call it and if they don't do that in the second half, he's going to continue to blitz. It is u high 15 cheney nothing on the Arby's GSL game of the week. It's a bummer. I mean, I just feel bad for these kids. You know, they continuously, you can't count on anything right now. You just don't know if something is going to get knocked sideways on it. It's a tough deal happening elsewhere tonight.

Fun little game with Toppanish and Pullman and Lakeside is out at East Valley here on the other side of the border with Post falls. They're up 21 to 6 on Moses Lake. Post Falls looking to have a pretty good year as well. They really are. And you know, and Sandpoint is outstanding as well.

They, they have a really good football team and if you get a chance, if you ever want to go up and really enjoy a great environment, unbelievable environment up there. Beautiful high school. It's right on the lake, you know, in terms of the field stadium. Yeah, it's really cool. I played baseball in there, there in the old stadium and if you hit a ball to right center field, you dink it off the wood, you know, student section.

It was really kind of a fun place. Is there a better drive to a high school football game in the Inland Northwest? No, there's not. Getting to go up to Pend Oreille. That's pretty cool.

That's a pretty cool place. And you know, Sandpoint's a great little town anyway, especially if you're a skier or even in the summer. They've got the festival up there and you know, a lot of good stuff going on from that standpoint. Anyway, we digress. Sorry about that.

So Paul, you and I were talking before the break. I think we're going to find out pretty quick if she has got anything for the second half. If you were coaching these guys, I mean obviously their roster is half the size of U High.

They're not quite as big. If your chimney's coach at halftime, what are you telling these guys? Composure. You know, we need to quit making stupid penalties. We've got to be basically be able to block the gaps in front of us and not let the university pour through.

It's like, you know, basically the little Dutch girl trying to stop the dam from breaking. And they've got to figure out a way to slow university down on the blitz and make them pay for the blitz. That play where they flip the ball out in the flat, that's how you make them pay. You get them in man coverage like that. They bring pressure and then you basically run a wheel, you know, with your back coming out of the backfield.

Hit him in stride, let him make some big plays, do that a couple times, that will slow that blitz down. But you can't turn the football over. You can't have special team gaffes like they did in the first half and you certainly can't have the penalties that they had, which was multiple here as well. First half bright spot Curry. Yes.

And I would also, I'd also throw in, I like the defensive play of dovish, number 26, the linebacker, and also Josh Whitley, both offensively and defensively. He's been, he's been a really good player, you know, out there. Two way player for them, you know. So again there were plays to be made for Cheney they just weren't able to make. And Bobby Birds a pretty experienced coach.

I mean this is his eighth year as the head coach of the Blackhawks, so, so it's not like he's a first year coach out there. He's been around long enough to know what kind of adjustments to make. The only question will be if his guys can properly make them. Yeah, but you're stepping up again. You know, you were 2A before and now you're a 3A school.

Because Cheney's growing like crazy. Like this entire area in Eastern Washington North Idaho's growing. So you know, they're stepping up at A level. And the gsl, it's been a bit down here the last couple years. You haven't seen the, you know, the big run to state or the semifinals that you normally see from the GS.

No Brett Rippens around anymore. Well, those, those are special and few and far between. I mean you don't, you don't have a guy that comes out as the all time record holder at, you know, at Boise State and just did a great job and he's playing the National Football League, you know, of course, great lineage, you know, with, with the ripens, you know, on that side and, and the three brothers that were all outstanding athletes, you know, over at Chadl and you know, again, but there's enough good football players that are coming out.

There's just been kind of a turnover and it's cyclical, it's weird. You'll see one team prep seems to be the consistent. But CVs had some great runs and Mead and Ferris and LC and you know, U High, you know, there's, there's been times when teams have been able to come through and, and play pretty well and, and I like the fact that you've got a 4A level and a 3A level.

They play each other and now the 2A level, I think that balances the league out a little bit. King of the hill right now, Mount Spokane and Jeep rep in the 3A, 4A level. But I think you're seeing, I think you're seeing improvement on the defensive side for Ferris. I think LC is trying to rebuild that program with Coach Ireland, who's a really good guy and he understands what it takes to be a Tiger, you know, having played there and coached there and as a teacher there.

And I think you'll see them turn some things around. But this is. And it'll be interesting to see Ridgeline, they're playing with basically freshmen and sophomores, a very small junior class and no seniors. How about that? How about.

How would you like to play varsity? Well, that's how we were. We were Brandon's high school down in California. We had a freshman, sophomore, junior class and we played varsity, JV and freshman. We got crushed.

So pretty good field position. I think we're gonna find out pretty fast, Paul, if Cheney's got anything here. Down 15 to start the second half, I think. Think. Let's see what Kind of adjustments they made.

Are they going to get outside? Are they going to use the back, you know, in the flat? Are they going to try to isolate a little bit, you know, downfield? Are they going to be able to stop university from getting pressure on their quarterbacks? More importantly, it's Samuel Coffin again at quarterback.

I wonder if Valance is hurt. Well, I think he might be. He might be in concussion protocol. He might. Who knows?

He took a heck of a shot there and he tried to come back. But, you know, you've got, you've got the, you know, number six in there now trying to get it done. All right, so Samuel Coffin, by the way, folks, did not look bad in the first half. He actually looked pretty good for a guy. They brought it off the bench.

The sophomore wasn't expecting to play. That's exactly right. So game though, that's. And we're right back to where we started on the penalty front. And you're going to get that with a pack up.

This game's going to take 12 hours to finish. We should be done Saturday morning about 6:00am Paul, I hope you didn't have any big plans after the game. No, but eventually I have to go home, get some sleep. Right. Going down to Pullman tomorrow.

1155 to go here to start the second half. Coffin drops back, swings it off to the right side to Nemi. Off flat on a swing route to going. He's up to the 35 yard line, brought down by the helmet of the 40 big flag coming in. Kind of a dirty looking play defensively after a gain of seven.

That's going to move the chains for sure. And actually I think that's going to be a, you know, where you grab the back of the shoulder pad, top of the helmet. Yeah, you know, one of those. Either way, that's a. David Orthodontics, first down.

Yep. Hey, Damon, Orthodontics. You forgot about those guys there. Won a lot of first downs in the first half, so. Not a lot, but that was a good call on that.

That was all a face mask. I thought it might have been a horse collar, but he got the top of the helmet, pulled his head back. We've seen that quite a bit here in this game, but usually against Cheney and what did they do? They came back to that little flare into the backfield. Coach is coachable.

He knows now. And guess what? They brought full pressure and that's how you slow down the blitz and then you add another 15 yards on top of it because of the penalty. So that was a big play right off the bat for Cheney. They have answered.

I like and I think for a guy who wasn't expecting to play, Samuel Coffin looks pretty comfy. He's getting better as the game goes on. He set his feet that time. Now why are they not. Why are they not marking off the.

The 15 yard penalty? There we go. Now they're moving the chains. Yeah, but that was only a five yarder. They didn't mark.

It wasn't 15. Are they gonna move the chains up to the 43 yard line and we'll figure it out? In hindsight, actually, they waved the penalty off. All right, so Samuel Coffin drops back. Linebacker blitz coming, huge pressure.

He throws over the middle. Scott, that ball is hauled in past the 50 yard line. How about that? Man, what a great catch. Josh Bingham 16 him his first catch of the night.

Kind of a little skinny post that time. But how about. Let's give Coffin Sam, number six, the quarterback. He stayed back there in the pocket. He didn't, you know, flush out.

He stayed. He waited for the receiver to make the break and he threw that ball perfectly. He has to run over and get the play from the Cheney sidelines. They had what, six or seven guys coming at him that time. He was able to get that pass off.

I thought it was going to get hit. Good composure, I thought for sitting in that pocket like that, that was nice. All right, so call that a gain of nine on the play. Second down and one with Nehemiah flat here in the backfield the right handed Coffin stands five yards back in the shotgun. Two receivers to his left, two to his right.

Flag comes in, that's going to be upsides. Now it looks like University is melting down on the penalty fast because they just jumped in in the neutral zone. I didn't see anybody move, but somebody moved for Cheney and that's going to go the other direction. So they have one play, you know, one step forward, two steps back. That's what's killed them.

They have just absolutely killed themselves with penalties. Yeah. This game has been slow. This game more than that has been sloppy in a way that I think if I were these coaches, I'd be a little bit concerned about might be some running on, on Monday when they get back to school. I think when they, the phone call their coaches on Sunday, they might be concerned.

Here comes the snap to confident. Here come the linebackers. And they bring him down. Oh, boy. Flying in, Malachi Miller.

Holy cow. Yeah, that was a nice sack. And he's been, he's been in that backfield. He's had a tackle for loss. He also has that sack that time and he just, he timed it perfectly.

The center, I think, was a little grumpy about that last, you know, motion penalty. And he didn't look up and see, you know, Malachi just kind of just scream right by him. And he, he did a good job. He could have crushed the quarterback. He just kind of grabbed him and gently placed him on the ground, which was very nice.

You know, it's funny for a guy who doesn't have any actual points on the board tonight, Malachi has maybe been the MVP both ways. Yeah. Because he's run the ball very well. He's well over 60 yards rushing and he's, he's been on, on a gaggle of tackles. Third down and 15 for coffin.

He hugs up a bomb on the deep route down the right side. That pass was incomplete. Josh Whiteley, the 6 foot 2 senior, the intended receiver, he was in coverage and he kind of threw him out of bounds. Well, and that's. And see and that's where the quarterback and that's where the timing comes into play.

He's got absolutely no chance to make a completion on that. What you want to do as a receiver, you want to run right down the number. And if he makes a throw to the outside towards the sideline, you make the adjustment. You've got six or six and a half yards to make that adjustment. If you're right on the sideline, it takes a perfect throw.

If you, if you throw them, you know, a ball like that, that's two yards out of bounds, you have no chance. Give them a chance. So after it's incomplete, It's a big 4th down and 15 punt situation coming up. They're gonna go left to right in the air across your radio dial. That one comes in and flags come in as well.

It's early in the season for everyone. Well, we'll get it going. The punter wanted the ball snapped. The offensive line were blocking. Everybody got the signal but the guy that has to snap the ball.

Now the question is, with David Deyton Thompson back to receive, another punt for you high on the right side of the 50. Will this be the first time he breaks one that doesn't get called back on a flag? Probably not. Place your bets, Paul. I'm going to say they're going to get nailed for a block in the back or a, you know, clip or something because they've been four for four.

The last four turns have been penalties. Well, and they had a penalty on this one because that was offsides against University. So good job by the center. I take back what I said. It was not your fault.

The bad people on the Titan side jumped in the into the neutral zone and you're a good man. So after the five yard penalty, it's now fourth and 10. They will still punt. Here comes the snap. Good one of the letters.

It is off. And here comes Dayton Thompson to receive. It takes a good bounce. Bounces right to the 30 yard line. But he's gonna let it go.

Rolls back inside the 25, down toward the 20. So not bad field position here for you high. But they're at the point of the game here, Paul, where Cheney looks like they're a little bit against the rope. So two more touchdowns rounds to put this game away. No, not even that one more.

If you make it a three possession game, I mean you score a touchdown, you're up 22. Not a lot of time left for no. And so I think what you do, I, you know, the coaching staff, if I'm on the coaching staff, I'm going to do two things. I'm going to move the chains, I'm going to burn clock. I'm going to try to let you know you're up basically two scores right now.

Move the chains, you know, flip the field. If you get a score, great. If not, burn the clock. Couple more demon orthodontics, first down, that would be nice. Yes.

936 to go here in the third quarter. Haberman comes back out to start the second half of them under center, turns and hands off to Malachi Miller. He shakes off a couple of linebackers who tried to get him by the shoulders. He turns that into a gain of 2 between the hash marks. Holy cow.

He had to break several tackles. And University basically is not starting to experience the same thing that Cheney had with all the blitzing. So they're bringing their pressure. So instead of running the ball into a seven man defensive front, get the ball to the outside kind of like, like what Cheney did. Take a page out of their offense.

Flare your back, hit him in the flat, let him go one on one. You give him a good head of steam, he's going to be tough to bring. Well, the Cheney defense puts down four linemen and they have three linebackers who are coming through the gap. So they're bringing six or seven guys on these plays. All right, so a short gain, second down and long coming up.

Here comes Haberman under center, goes back play action, dumps it off to the right side. That one is hauled in by Longo, but he's dropped for a loss on the play. Actually, I take it back, that is not long ago. We're getting a number, but we have some roster confusion tonight. That is Shane Skidmore and a nice tackle in the open field by the corner, Owen Scott, number three, who came up there and played that well.

They had a zone that time on the backside by Cheney, so the safety was playing deep. They roll the corner up in kind of a sky cloud thing where the corner sits in the flat. He saw the tight end release, actually a good call by University, keeping the clock going. Easy throw, but a very nice heads up play by the corner to knock him down in the open field. The Titans are expanding their, their wide receiver room tonight.

We came into this game thinking they were just going to be a couple guys touching the ball. We are now up to, man, I'd say eight or nine guys who have made skill plays on offense. Third down and 11 have been around under center, drops back and here comes the land game. Yep. See that's on the offense.

There's no excuse for that. You know, you can see the clock, it's in either end zone. Quarterbacks got to get up there. They're lollygagging coming out of the huddle, get to the line of scrimmage, take a quick peek at the end zone, you know, clock and go. And you can't blame the refs for that because they did.

They're adjudicated. You know, so what, what part of the IRS rule do you want to ignore? I mean, you know, you got to call it. It's part of the deal. Third down and 15 coming up.

And it looks like Cheney's bringing linebacker blitz on the defense. They do play action here. Haberman rolls out to the right, runs out of bounds, tackled for a loss. Big fourth down coming up. I can't tell if that's technically a sack or if he ran out of bounds.

Either way, they're gonna punt. Well, and I think that was, that was definitely basically great pressure again. They brought the, the middle linebacker right up the middle, and he's the one that fleshed Haberman out of the pocket. And the receivers were running deep routes, so he didn't have a chance. So now Cheney gets a stop.

They do a great job on defense. All of a sudden they get a score. Here we're within one score. We got a ball game, people. I know you find that hard to believe, but Cheney is basically.

If they can field this ball, they're going to get, you know, great field position here. They've got an excellent chance. Oh, and here comes the snap. That's a good one of the letters. That ball is away.

And Cordell lay her back to receive the ball here for Cheney at the 45. He dropped it, stands up and recovers it to the 40. Gets between the hash marks to about the 37. You play field position on this thing. Your defense is doing a great job. You know, that might be the way to go. And, and that's what you're seeing here in this drive. Pretty big defensive lineman into the game, which you can talk about in a second here for Cheney on the new first down.

Turns and hands off to Thompson to brought down by the linebackers for no gain. Talk to us about this big boy, the Genie D line now, Paul. Yeah, no, he's. He's a large human being and I'm trying to get his number here. I got to put my glasses.

I'll look him. I'm the one with binoculars. Let's see, 55, 65. Yeah, 65. He's six to 340 pounds, man.

He's a junior. So he still has chance to grow. Seems like that seems against the laws of physics. That's a big, big fella there. He put him right over the nose and say, don't go anywhere.

He was able to find kind of an opening between the linebacker and the safety. Broke a tackle, spun to the outside, got all the way down to the 25 yard line. Damon Orthodontics is getting their money's worth on this drive. That's another first down for Cheney or for U High. And they're doing a great job.

They're continuing to keep the clock going and they're eating up yardage. Strangely, this is maybe the best start to finish drive we have seen so far tonight from uhai. So dropping back, hands off. Here comes Thompson along the right side, goes off tackle, gain of six or seven yards. He's dragged down by the knees.

Yeah, He's. He's around 40 yards, you know, on, on five or six carries. And these running backs between Miller, Thompson and they also had another yeah, those, those three have been a kind of a three headed monster and they have, they've done a nice job. They've impressed. I like how they're running the football.

All right, 435 to go here in the third quarter. It feels like Jeannie is potentially against. The ropes are down 15 nothing. Uhai threatening again now inside the 20 yard line and they are in the Blackhawks red zone. Here comes Haberman on first down, turns, gives Thompson, goes off tackle again, bounces to the outside under about the 16 yard line.

Quite get to the first down marker. It's going to be third and one. Excellent coverage that time. Good job by the safeties to come up and, and kind of force contain in there. I think, I think that was Josh Bingham, number 16, who came over, who's, who's been a busy bee as well, you know, for, for the Blackhawks.

But you've got a third and one here and you know they've been doing that little zone, zone rushing attack. Let's see if they just try to, you know, hit it between the tackles here and pick up that yard. Two safeties back towards the end zone for cheating on defense. That might not be very efficient. Well, they're playing the two deep to cover two shell.

That's what everybody's doing. Oh, and here comes the snap and Haberman fumbles the snap. He falls forward. You know, Paul, he fell forward enough that he actually might have picked up the first down by mistake. We'll see what the referees say.

Yeah, but I think his knee hit the ground because when he went down and you know, Coach Bird is over there and he's, he's not happy with that spot. He thought the knee hit before that line and I, I kind of agree with him. Think, I think that ball should have been moved back to the 16 and it's on just the nose right towards the 15. Yeah, they're gonna say no loss on the play despite the fact that it was a fumbled snap that he fell on. Actually more like fourth and inches here.

Down on the Cheney, what, 15 yard. Another quarterback sneak. I would. As long as he doesn't fumble it, he'll get it. Fourth down and one, they're bringing their offense back out.

Here comes Haberman, scans the defense, two half backs in it. It is a QB sneak. He goes to the right side of a center, falls forward. It's going to be a legal procedure on university because the guy in motion didn't get himself set. You had to go basically three inches and he lined up wrong.

He Went to the left side instead of the right side. And by the time he got back over there, they're going to move that back five yards. Those are the plays that drive coaches nuts. Yeah. So this ball is going to be down around the 20, which would make this.

We'll see exactly where they face this. This might be about a 35, 36 yard kick. As they bring a couple guys on. I think they're going to kick it. Why not give you a three score lead?

You're up 18, up 15. The. Oh, he's already, he's already had a 26 yarder. So let's see what Saucerman could do. Yeah, this is Will Saucerman, number 33 in gold on his maroon jersey.

They're on the right hash mark. They lead by 15. He already hit a field goal. This would make it 18. This ball's on the 20.

That makes this a 36 yard kick. That's pretty good distance for a high schooler. It's a bad snap. The ball's on the ground and the snapper is just going to throw this one away. It's caught at the 20.

Didn't matter. That's a turnover. Well, that was just a bad snap and that wasn't, I mean it was a little bit high. The snapper, the holder should have been able to feel that thing, but I think he panicked a little bit and now it's an interesting rule. The only time that you can be on the ground with the knee when you're holding and touching the football and not have it down as in a situation like that, as a holder.

Because normally if you have a quarterback goes to his knee, what happens? The ball's dead. Yeah, but if you're holding it for an extra point or a field goal, you can pick the ball up even though your knees on the ground. So good job by Cheney. They force them away.

But you had a lot of clock burning there by University on that drive and that's kind of what they wanted to accomplish. Accomplish. 240 to go here in the third quarter as Cheney takes back over. They have not changed the score. After the botched field goal kick, they're still down 50 nothing.

They take the ball from their own 20 yard line on the left side of the 50 and this is the backup quarterback. And again Coffin takes the ball on first down, throws downfield. He's got a man behind the defense and he undershot Curran Moore. Moore had a step on the, on the receiver there. God, I mean on the defensive back and man, he is tall but that ball was just under thrown so he could, couldn't come back.

Inside corner did a nice job of using his body to wall the 65 receiver off. And so I give him credit on that. He used leverage that time to basically defend. I like starting to drive with that deep pass to the number one guy. That's gutsy.

Well, the good news, it stops the clock so you get more opportunity. But if you go three and out, you're going to give University the ball back. Your defense is going to start getting tired because you've been on the field a lot and you've got to get some points here. 234 here to go in the third quarter. Second down and 10 for Cheney, luckily for them after the miss.

Field goal just down 15. This game is still technically in reach. Here comes a snap. It's on the ground. Bad one throws over the middle and it's nearly intercepted.

Rico Longo tipped it away. He already had a pick. That was nearly two. Well, he gets a pass defended from his own guy, so he's. Oh, that.

That's so frustrating. You're right there, that's a gimme interception. It's gonna hit you right in the chest. And your own dude comes over there and lays out, knocks the ball away. Nice job, Longo.

So not only does he have an interception, he also has a pass broken up and he's going to have to buy the corner lunch on Monday for, for doing that. Is that how it works in high school? Absolutely. Especially if you just took, if you took an interception away from me by defending me, I'm going to hide your socks. You're not going to find your socks for at least a week.

Third down and 10 here for Cheney. They're on their own. Left side of the 50 balls at the 20. Two receivers split at each side. Here comes Coffin, drops back, swings it out to his halfback and the play is blown.

Dead flags come in. And that's on the offense. I think that's a delay a game and you've got a little fisty cuffy there. And now you got hankies again because we're going to have unsportsmanlike stuff there. You got a couple of guys in the middle doing the tussle and there's somebody pretty darn upset.

Somebody may get ejected for this. Paul, are you going to get enough sleep to be ready to broadcast that eastern game tomorrow? Who needs sleep? I mean, sleep is overrated. Well, it's not.

I like sleep sleep very much. But no, we're going to be here Until Tuesday, which is nice. That's a lot of airtime. I feel bad. He's going to be busy.

What's going to be fun is we can hand it off directly to Larry on Saturday morning for the pregame. Yeah, but I'm in the pregame show too, so that means I've got to drive all the way out to Cheney and they probably need our sets. Yeah, that's. He. He probably would enjoy that immensely.

He wouldn't have to hear me, you know, bellowing in the back. He can really get all his play by play in that way. That's true. Yeah. Because I usually try to.

The only way I can get on highlight, just. It's a little coaching point for you, play by play guys, when you guys are doing. So he's doing his giddy up horse thing. I'll go or say just one word just to get. So I can get in the, in the highlight.

That's the only way I get on those highlights. So he gets the whole thing. He's the, you know, sportscaster of the year. And you hear one little, you know, little sound from yours truly and that's, that's the only way I can get tight end. So just a little coaching point for you.

So if a guy gets a little excited, it's okay. He just wants to get on your highlight, that's all. Really, it's a compliment. We got unsportsmanlike going both ways, so that's probably a good way to handle it. Then I, if I'm the coach, I'm going to take both of those guys off and have a chat with them and say, look, you throw a punch, you're going to get ejected.

And if you get ejected for half, you have to, you know, sit out another half. Then next week, is that worth it? Use that as a coaching moment. Seriously. Talk to both your guys, get them off the field, bring them over to the sidelines and have a discussion.

I didn't see any linemen downfield. I didn't see any. Yeah, no, I'm not buying that. That was the tight end there. All the linemen were behind the line of scrimmage there.

I'm not. I'm not liking that. I would decline that penalty and just say, okay, you're going to kick the ball. Yep, yep. And so again, there's a lot of critiquing going on here and we're hard on these guys and this is not an easy thing to do, but all of the linemen were engaged in blocking.

It was a tight end that was downfield. He's a legal receiver. It's okay. He can do that. Nine o'.

I mean there was. It looked like rivers running right down the middle of the street. It was insane. Speaking of, of that cousin, by the way, shout out former Quarterly and high school quarterback Ryan Dunton. Oh, really?

Yes. Yeah. What does he do in New York? He does a bunch of financial and media stuff. Oh, wow.

So Coeur d' Alene High School representing that's class of 2010, I think. Look at that. That's impressive. Played a season at Whitworth before he transferred to Boise State. 157 to go.

Shout out to the Duttons 15, nothing here. You high on offense. On first down and 10, Haberman drops back pressure coming, throws to the near side of the 30 yard line. That passes caught out of the backfield by Thompson, who lined up as a wide receiver on that play, gets to the 25. That's a gain of 13 and a day in orthodox.

And you've got another flag from the back judge coming in. So let's see what happens on that. If you've got a hold or a pass interference or you may have an offensive pass interference, but I really didn't see anything. You got a. Yeah, an offense they called offensive pass interference might have been a screenplay but would have been away from the ball.

And that's a tough call against University that's going to go against them and that one's being marched back. I'll tell you what, despite the fact that UHI looks like the more complete unit tonight and it looks like they're on their way to winning this game, especially if they score one more touchdown. If I were the U High coaching staff, what I would be focusing on is penalties when you get back together on Sunday or Monday. Well, penalties and execution. And what you, what you've done is you've taken yourself out of so many different scoring positions.

Think of all the special teams great returns that Thompson has had. Yeah, he got it all the way down to the five and they started the drive on the 45. Yeah, it's a 40 yard penalty, you know. Well, there was an unsportsmanlike in there and there was also a block in the back. So they move this thing back 15 yards for, for offensive pass interference.

Yeah. So here's U high, first down and 25 yards to go here toward the end of the third quarter, Haberman looks, scans the defense. Looks left, looks right, steps up at the pocket. Down he goes. He's dragged down for a sack.

And all of a sudden, man, here comes the Cheney defense. That's a little bit more like it. That's Chris Hunding burrow. Well, they just blitzed up the middle and kind of overwhelmed the Titans, you know, underneath and oh boy, I'd still run the football the outside. I don't know why they're not using clock management.

How much time's left? One minute. And now exactly one minute left to go in the third quarter. On second down and 30. This should be fun.

Punt. Not a bad idea. That would catch Cheney by surprise, I guess. Second down and 30 and the safeties are now playing 15 yards from the stick. Haberman drops back there's a bomb down the right side.

He's got a man behind the defense. And it's hauled in the 10, the 5. Touchdown. It's Jalen King for his second of the night. That may be the play of the game there because he just got behind the coverage and.

And give Haberman total credit on that. He threw a beautiful ball and we were making fun of the first and our second and third. 35 or 30. And he goes right down the sidelines to King and hits in stride. That was a beautiful throw.

21 nothing. Second. Second touchdown reception for King. Second touchdown pass for Haberman and what a beautiful throw on second and 30. Just as I was saying, how back deep those safeties were playing.

They weren't playing deep enough, clearly. All right, so here comes their special teams unit out. 21 nothing. Oh, you got legal side substitution. And it looks like they're going to run a play.

They throw to the end zone. 85 came in and he's. Illegal motion. You've got. They only had 10 players on the field.

They got two, four, six, eight. They got. They got. Yeah, they have 11 now, so they're going to move that back. So just line up, kick the ball.

Okay, guys, a lot of execution issues here. I would say so. But you high with that touchdown. As you and I were saying, Paul, that that might very well be enough to put them over the top of this one. And they have yet to convert an extra point, by the way.

Well, it looks like a three touchdown deal, but. And by the way, that that 50 yard pass was. It was a beaut. That was really, really nice. Yep.

Now we saw early in the third quarter we saw a couple things we like from Cheney. A little bit of fearless play calling. We always love when they throw to current Moore. The question is can they start to put it together with what is essentially a backup quarterback. I think the backup quarterback has actually played better than the starter.

I agree. I mean I hate to say that, you know, just because I think he got doinked early and you know, Valance is a good young man. He's a junior. I like his moxie but. But I think he got bounced around and got a little bit gun shy.

And this young man has come in and really I think played admirable considering he probably wasn't getting a lot of snaps during the week. Yeah, that's exactly right. This is Samuel Coffin. He takes the first down snap, hands it off to Nehemiah flat. He bounces off a guy in the backfield, is able to get back to the line of scrimmage and then some gets between the hat, turns that into a gain of 4 yards and that might end up being the end of the third quarter.

Although we have a guy limping off the field now for Uhio appears to be really hurt down at the 40 yard line and now he falls down. That's bad. Yeah, he's grabbing his ankle and that clock was gonna run out, the quarter was gonna run out, but now they're gonna have to stop the clock to deal with the injury. We've seen a lot of this. He went down, got back up, was Lindbig and then fell back down.

That was not a nice thing to see here. 8 seconds left in the quarter. That will never End. And now the U High players in their gold helmet and maroon jersey. I think he got rolled up inside there.

It looked like he was. He was kind of around the pile and one of the. One of the players, you know, kind of dove in there late and rolled off and kind of landed those high ankle sprains. You know, that situation is kind of a tough deal. So I think they're going to send.

I wonder if they're going to send both teams over the sidelines and let them wait it out there, let them talk to their coaches, get some water. And that's what they should be doing, getting water, you know, to the. To the players. Because you've. You're having a lot of hydration issues.

Second down and six. Here comes Coffin, takes the snap, throws over the middle. That ball is intercepted. It's the third one of the night and we're trying to get a number on him past the 40 yard line. Down the sideline he goes.

Not again. It's Dylan Thompson. He stepped out of bounds. Yep, he stepped out of bounds on the 32. But how to night for Dayton Thompson?

He's been unbelievable and now that that pick he's stepping in there because guys have basically been dropping all over the place. He's got a touchdown run and now he's an interception. Nearly had an interception return for a touchdown. But he stepped out of bounds right on about the 32 or 33 yard line. That ball was just overthrown.

He's just a threat everywhere. And think of the, the all purpose yards he would have had on punt returns. I might, I might circle him for our little player play of the game. Our alliance. So how about that Malachi Miller. I'll tell you what, you know what? We might have to make it a co thing. Well, not. Well, what about the quarterback in King who hooked up for two touchdowns?

I'd like to go with somebody Speaking of the quarterback, TJ Haberman, he stands in the pocket and gets absolutely blasted by a linebacker. He pitches it along the outside of Thompson. He's got a first down and more along the left sideline down inside the 20 yard line for a big first down penalty. He got all the way down to the 10. A flag comes in.

I'd say that, I'd say that's over 100 kids tonight. That's not bad. Well, they came out in the, in the Oregon weather as you like to say. Yeah, kind of an organy night. Yeah, this is, this is good to see good student section.

Well, it's nice to see fans in the stands, honestly, you know, with all the stuff that's been going on and unfortunately the mass mandates and all the other things that have hampered attendance. It's good to see a good, good crew out here. First in five from the 25 yard line. They turn and give off on a whole, on a massive hit. McKergo into the game to take the handoff.

He got clobbered by a linebacker around the sticks. Yeah, and I'm trying to figure that might be our little buddy, number 26, Dobish, who sat several tackle for losses and he's had a half a dozen tackles easy. And that was a big blast. Great job. Second and relatively short, the second in a yard.

Yep. Isn't it nice to hear public address announcers and students again in the states? Yeah, it is, it really is. Let's enjoy it while we can. Don't, don't you dare Paul, don't you put that black magic on me.

Cheney's a little bit bummed here because they gave up that long, you know, touchdown pass and we were telling them to punt. So that shows you what a great analyst I am. I have no clue. And they throw a touchdown, a 50 yard bomb. So instead of punting the football, they just threw it up in the air and let their good receiver run underneath it and catch it for a score.

So kudos to the offensive staff for coming up with that play. That'll take him down inside the 20 yard line. 10:15 to go, 21 nothing. You high there on offense and threatening once again inside the red zone. We're here in whistles and now the referees will start winding the clock again.

I don't know what was up with that. That'll take us down to 10 minutes and 5 seconds as Haberman goes under center. He's got two wide receivers out to the far side. He drops back. It's play action.

Yeah, he had pretty good block walking up front, you know, I mean the quarterbacks could get, you know, player of the game pretty much all the time. That's true. So I'd like to kind of spread it out a little bit. And I just think we have guys we're trying to figure out how to line up. So 27 nothing is our score.

So he had himself a rough day. Those television guys, you know, sometimes they get a lot of credit, but this time they got. They got pounded a little bit. That's tough. It's tough too.

I feel bad for the kids because you kind of prepare for a team, you bet all week long and then all of a sudden you've got to bring somebody else in. And that makes your planning goes out the window. It does. Or you try that plan and if it doesn't work, then you got to come up on the fly, which is not easy. Let's see you're getting the game in at all.

Well, I just. You just want these kids to have a good fall. They deserve to have a, you know, legitimate fall where they can come out count on a football game and have fans in the stands, have cheerleaders on the track doing their thing, the band, you know, going out at halftime and everybody.

You just want them to have that experience. And it's been tough the last 18 months. 943 left to go in this one, week two. And it looks like barring some kind of absolute miracle, you, highs gonna pull this one out on top of Cheney. You mean four touchdowns in this in a span of less than eight minutes.

That, that's a new first down. I think the defensive back there for University looked like he was picking the receiver's pocket. I mean he had two hands wrapped around him. And that was actually a great play by the quarterback. The backup who has come in and had to replace Valance who was hurt.

You know, Coffin who did a nice job of rolling right. He saw pressure, he stepped up, he threw the ball deep, he created that pass interference by his ability to scramble. They're going to get 15 yards out of it. And that will be a Damon Orthodontics first down. When it's all said and done.

Waiting for the referee's official marking. And there it goes. You gotta love it. All these U High kids in the student section, Paul, they're staying. Well that's, that's a good thing.

But he's not an offensive lineman. No, that's exactly right. So a little coaching point on the little dude over here. Dude, tight end guys in eligible receiver. And guess what the officials are doing?

Stopping the clock. Yep. Oh, now I got a personal foul against U high legal man downfield. And those penalties wipe each other out. Wow.

So basically they would had a first down had it not been for the tight end meandering down the field. Alright, so I guess we will do this one all again. Still marked as first down and 10. Cheney here from their own what, 28 eight yard line between the hash marks. 9:30 to go there.

Down 28 nothing and out comes Kaufman with two receivers split to the left, one to the right. Turns and hands off up the middle to flat and he maybe got back to the line of scrimmage. Defensive line gobbled him up. That'll wind the clock inside 920. I've been impressed by University's defensive front tonight.

They've done, they've done a really good job. And I also like the play calling and how aggressive the defense has been with all the blitzes. So good combination of excellent defensive line play. Linebackers getting pressure on quarterback, good coverage downfield usually bodes well. And that's why they've got a zero up on the scoreboard.

Right. He did not even get back to the line of scrimmage. Loss of two on the play. Second down and 12 and now we're down inside, nine minutes to go. Coffin comes out in the shotgun.

He's standing back of a 22 receivers out to the left, one to the right. Here comes linebacker. Pressure from the right side. Steps up, rolls out to the right. He's looking downfield.

I don't think he has anybody. He rolls out of bounds, maybe a gain of two on the play to turn it into the third down and 10. Yeah, just good pressure there. And really no place to go because all the receivers were blanketed downfield and. And again another nice blitz.

He picked up maybe a yard, yard and a half. But Maybe two. Yeah, he just ran out of room over there as he got tossed into the Cheney sidelines. So excellent pursuit that time. Again, another nice blitz playing man coverage in the secondary.

No place for him to go. Smart play. Didn't throw it into coverage. By and large tonight bought some time. By and large, the U High blitz has done its job.

Yeah, but see, teams can take advantage of that. But you know what, you don't have to blitz all the time. You can show blitz and back off. You can disguise stuff. You can do a lot of different things.

But they keep bringing pressure to Cheney. I kind of like it. Third down and one. Here comes Coffin. Swings it off out of the backfield to Hubbard.

They like this play. He's on the left side and he's dragged down at the 28 for a gain of two yards. That'll bring up fourth down and right in the middle of the field. That'll wind the clock. That was Caleb Walcott who came up up from a strong safety position.

Did a great job of turning that back inside. He didn't get the tackle on it, but he made the play because basically he disrupted that. That flare out into the backfield. That was a nice adjustment by the defensive staff because that play here in the second half for Cheney has been very successful. Well, let's see if they can have an opportunity here for.

Actually that's not Dayton Thompson. They're going to have return. I think they're going to change it up here. That looks like Rico Longo to me. Back at the 45.

Well, Thompson's been busy and he's been having cramping issues as well. So they might be trying to to protect him. And he's on the sidelines right now trying to get fluids. Bad snap picked up on the ground. He kicks the Longo is waiting back at his own 40 and he's going to return it.

Gets a block and knee went down. Knee went down at the 41. So they're on 41 yard line on the left side of the 50 is where they will take over here with 7:55 left to go in this game 28 nothing. First down Malachi Miller, a 15 yard gain, gets it across the 50, down to the 47. Paul I've got him over 75 yards rushing unofficially and his defensive presence has been awesome. But I like the fact that University has rotated three backs tonight to try to keep them somewhat fresh. It is still Malachi Miller has waiting back on the other side of the 50. First down and 10 here for you high and a new quarterback is in.

We'll name him in a second here as Miller takes the handoff along the outside. He's getting a blocking from receivers picks that end up giving about five yards to the 40 yard line. And like we said, a new quarterback is in here for University High School. It is number 15. It is Dominic Longo.

That sounds like a brother. Yeah, that might be a brother of Rico Longo who has the interception and he also has a pass breakup on his corner who he knocked the ball out of the corner's hands because I think he only wanted the interception and didn't want the corner to get it. Always fun to have brothers on a football team. Always great stories. You can imagine the practices where those go against each other.

That'd be kind of cool. My brother was four years younger than me and so he didn't want to do that. That was disappointing. Second down and five after the gain on the play. And that is still Miller in the backfield for Longo who lines up under center.

He looks a little bit smaller than the other quarterback. Three down lineman for Cheney. Here come the linebacker, blitzes, turn and hand off to Miller. He goes off to the left, sees a hole. He's got a first down and more down inside the 30 yard line.

Turned that into a really good gain and he stayed in bounds too. And now the flag comes in late from the back judge so you might have some extracurricular going on over there. And that's just another composure issue. Back judge came over there, threw that flag really, really late. Can I tell you really quickly a really cool high school football story?

The last place I worked before I came back to Spokane, there was a senior center who was the head of the offensive lineman for his freshman varsity quarterback brother. Oh, that's cool. Isn't that cool for their relationship? Yeah, that's really cool. Yeah, you love seeing stories like that.

Where was that at? Savannah, Georgia. Savannah, Great town. Pretty different than Spokane. Yeah, no kidding.

That's where you get the half, the distance thing. All right, so 28 nothing is our score. You high on top of Cheney. And now they're back in the red zone. They've got got this ball down on the 18 yard line.

Question is now can Dominic Longo lead them on a touchdown drive instead of the A unit that's been out there for most of the game? He turns and gives off here to Miller. He goes back up the middle, maybe gets back to the line of scrimmage, stopped at the 15. Then if you do mark the half a distance. Why are the sticks not the same?

They should have moved that 10 yard penalty. It should have been. The stick should have been right where the, you know, the, the down marker is. So they Mismarked the, the first down. I think you're right being critical on these guys and I feel bad about that.

But we do have to point out some inequities on that front and I hope they figure it out. And the clock will run us now down inside. Five minutes to go in this one. Paul, where are you guys going next week? Oh, worst road trip of the year.

We have to go to Western Illinois and we fly into Lake Peoria which is an hour and a half bus ride to the ballpark. It's the worst press box probably in college football. I mean we have to do the I formation to do the broadcast. Well, on the bright side, you have a high school game next week. You have glass up front and no venting.

So if it's hot, it's toasty, you know, so it's going to be tough. But bright side for you guys, U high meat on Thursday next week. The radio is a fun game. Yes. So excited about that.

We don't have to travel as far. It's a four hour flight, one and a half. So it's a five and a half hour travel deal to go all the way out there. Does eastern charter flights for football? They do.

And the sad part is western Illinois would have come out and played us last year but that season got wiped out because of some little goofy thingy going on. All right, back to the action. Third down and five. Cheney puts down four. Big alignment on the line and all the linebackers look like they're blitzing.

Longo stands under center. Here comes the pressure turns and hands off to Miller. He's going to try to go to the right. And he's dropped to the backfield for a loss. Spun down a couple of guys though with them.

That's down inside four minutes. Well, the field goal kicker has been pretty darn good as well. He's been. He, he's had an extra point. He's had a field goal from 26 yards.

Awesome. And we. I like him. They had a bad snap though that kind of wiped out a chance for, for another field goal for him as well. So that was, that was disappointing.

But I think university now has found their kicker and they feel good about Saucerman. He, he's in a position where he gets a good swing in this thing. This will be, this will be good. Yeah. So this ball is down at the 11 yard line.

So call this a 27 yard kick. Sossman has had one basically in tonight from what I think goes about 35. So this should be a borderline Chip shot for him. High snap. Here it comes.

That ball is tipped. Ball bounce at the 15 yard line. Doesn't matter who fell on it. It was fourth down. Yep.

And it was blocked. That was just a great job. Low kick that time, but good pressure right up the middle by Cheney. Nice job by them. They've not quit.

And I give. I give, you know, Coach Bird a lot of credit out here. He's got this team playing hard. They just kind of ran in a little bit of a bud saw from. From University and I.

And I've been impressed by University's defense. I love the fact that they've been so aggressive. Their defensive front's been really good and they've been blitzing the heck, those linebackers have been really, really good tonight. So after the blocked kick, the score stays 28 nothing. University on top of Cheney here.

And the Blackhawks will take this ball from what, their own 15 yard line as we get ready to start to put a bow on this one. So, Paul, we came into this game thinking that University was going to be the slightly better team. I'm not sure we saw 28 nothing in the final score. No, I would agree with you. Both of these teams had a rough first game, having to play Monsvocana Prep.

Two of the better teams, if not the best teams in the 3A 4A right off the bat. So this is a little bit more in their wheelhouse. And, you know, I think University is showing pretty well right now. Fumble. Snap.

Yeah, Here comes the snap. That's off the hands. Got it. You high? I think fell on that ball inside the 10, but we'll see what the referees have to say.

Not enough celebrating. I think Coffin got on it. Yep, I think he did. I think he took that away from the. I think it was the linebacker that came in there.

Looked like he dove in, but he may have ripped the ball out of his hand. So give him some credit for showing some good strength. Gonna run us down inside three minutes, 245 to go. 28 nothing. Our score.

And it looks like the Cheney Blackhawks, after getting blanked by Mount Spokane last week, 54 nothing, are going to be on the wrong end of another shutout. They haven't scored two wheat in two games, so that's something to work on. Here comes a linebacker blitz. That ball is on the ground again on the snap. But it's a blown play.

Dead. Yeah, because he went down. He went down to feel the football both on his ground. Yeah. Remember we told you what the exception was, and that's on extra points and field goals.

So that time they lose another. And that. That's just the snap. And that's, you know, that's a tough deal, you know, for, you know, for the Blackhawks there. And I'm trying to figure out who the center is.

I think that's Anderson in there, 66, but they've been moving a lot of people around, too, so I don't know if that's correct. But you've got third and about 20 inside your five. And we'll see Coffin coming out of the gun here, standing on the goal line for third down and 20. Takes a good snap, thankfully this time. Swings on a pass to the far side over the head of Whiteley.

It's incomplete. I think he was afraid of standing in the end zone and getting to safety. So that's 4th and 20, actually. That was the right place to go. He had a guy open in the flat.

He just. I think he was a little gun shy, not wanting to make a mistake, and he just didn't step and throw in the direction. He had somebody there. He had a corner coming off and coverage. You know, if he can break a tackle, he's probably gonna get 10, 12 yards.

So that was the right call. I like that call. But they're gonna have to punt the ball back and uhai's gonna get great field position. And the clock continues to run inside of 140. And you heard the students doing the up and down, jumping with the cheerleaders, chasing side thing.

That's cool. Yeah, that's a. That's a fun one. That's a bad snap into the end zone. Thankfully, to get the punt away.

It's not very far. It's not even to get out past the 30 yard line. Bounces out of bounds. That actually does roll past the 30 to the 35. So 130 to go.

UHI is going to trot out their offense, leading by 28. Back out there one more time, hopefully take the two runs and then a knee and end at 28. Zero. Hear the band, hear the drums. Isn't that great?

Unofficially, he's probably had a dozen tackles, several tackles for losses, a sack. He's had a pass breakup. This young man has been all over the field. He's been on special teams too, you know, running downs on kicks and punt coverage. So he's coming out getting a well deserved break.

I thought he played a brilliant game. Down inside a minute. Give him a gain of nine yards on the play. Second down and one coming up here as Longo goes back out there and Cheney jumped. Although they're pointing to the U high line saying they jumped.

Yeah, but if you jump into the neutral zone and cause the other team to. Well, I guess somebody moved. So good job by Cheney to react to it. And they're gonna move that back 5 yards plus that stops the clock. So you know, hold your water, you know what the count is, come on.

But you've got some backups in there that are excited to play and so it's a chance for them to get a little bit little opportunity there and you know, you're something you're gonna have to learn from the offensive line. Coach is gonna have a chat. What was it on? It was on two. Why'd you jump on one?

I don't know. Coach K, go run around the field. So three down lineman here for Cheney. 30 seconds to go. This might be our last play of the game.

Very well could be. Longo comes out under center, turns and hands off to the right side, dragged down by the back and that's probably gonna do it. We especially liked a couple reads he made. Had a good touchdown pass to Jalen King in the first half but boy did he hit a home run in the second half. Second down and 30 and the safeties are now playing 15 yards from the sticks. Haberman drops back, there's a bomb down the right side. He's got a man behind the defense and it's hauled in the 10, the 5.

Touchdown. It's Jalen King for his second of the night. Yeah, 50 yard touchdown pass. That was his second touchdown of the night. Jalen King had a great game and then Habermoon wasn't done and and he came back and hit Buchanan on a 19 yard throw as well and that kind of wrapped up the scoring.

The first score was a two yard run by Thompson that was set up by the special teams play who did a great job of basically tackling the punter after a bad snap on Cheney's three yard line. Two plays, three yards, missed extra point. Then of course the Haberman touchdown pass at 19 yards made it 12 nothing. They went for two again, didn't get it. So you're still up 12 nothing.

That score took place in the second quarter at 6:47. Then Saucerman came back with 150 to go, kicked a 26 yard field goal and I thought really, you know, had a nice kick, you know, from that standpoint. And they went in at halftime up 15 to nothing. You had that 50 yard touchdown pass, second touchdown of the night for Haberman, second touchdown reception for King. But I thought Malachi Miller who rushed for almost 100 yards, who had probably eight tackles, two tackle for losses, actually three tackle for losses, a sack, he had a pass breakup, he was all over the field. And also Dayton Thompson who basically had two pass breakups. He had an interception, he had 40 yards rushing, he had well over 100 yards on punt returns and a touchdown and a touchdown. And I thought those two guys in my opinion separated themselves well enough from everybody else. And I like to give them both co players.

I like your picks of Malachi Miller and Dayton Thompson. I'd also like to throw out Jalen King because catching two touchdowns is no slouch. No, that's, that's true. And it takes a quarterback to put the ball out there, you know, on that standpoint. But that's what receivers are supposed to do and quarterbacks are supposed to do.

So that's a normal occurrence. They had a great game, no question. I thought the better game of those two dudes. I think I'm with you and your player of the game. Well, players of the game tonight, brought to you by the fine folks at Alliance Insurance.

And you know, unfortunately the, the Battle of the Bell between Meade and Mount Spokane was canceled or postponed.

They'll play that at a later date, unfortunately, because of COVID issues and, and there were several other games in the area that were wiped out. A couple of games are going to be played tomorrow that were rescheduled to try to get some football in. I love the way they brought pressure and they had guys step up and, and make some plays. And I think Cheney was just a little bit overmatched tonight and they'll, they'll get their act together and come back and play well. But I think next week's game, I'm going to give University a great shot at that because Mead's gonna have to sit out a week they don't get to play because of what happened. So that'll be interesting to see. And me does have talents, although they didn't look totally together last week.
